STUDENT FRIENDLY COURSE DESCRIPTIONS BUSINESS STUDIES Introduction to Information Technology Course Code: BTT 1O Are you ready for the 21 st century? Students will work individually and collaboratively to prepare their business communication skills for any future course or career path they choose. Students will learn positive and productive use of social media, how to troubleshoot technology, present with confidence, and how to protect their online footprint, identity and keep their information safe. Through the hands on use of word processing, spreadsheets and presentation software students will learn to create effective reports, graphs, research, multimedia presentations, posters and websites. Pre-requisite: None Introduction to Business, Grade 10 Open BBI 2O Students will get to explore all components of business: production, marketing, managing people, accounting, finance/stock market and entrepreneurship. Every component of business will last for a few weeks, allowing students to develop the strong understanding of the fundamentals for each area and apply theories learned to practical situations they would encounter in business. Students obtain hands-on experience by simulating running a business through the semi-annual venture week event. In addition, students will learn how to develop their public speaking, teamwork and leadership skills through interactive class activities.

Entrepreneurship: The Venture, Grade 11 College BDI 3C This course focuses on ways in which entrepreneurs recognize opportunities, generate ideas, and organize resources to plan a successful venture that enables them to achieve their goals. You, as students, will create a venture plan for a business of your choice. Through hands-on experiences, you will have opportunities to develop the values, traits, and skills most often associated with successful entrepreneurs. Students will also have an opportunity to demonstrate their entrepreneurial characteristics and skills by assisting in the planning and organizing of a school fundraising event. Marketing: Goods, Services and Events, Grade 11 College BMI 3C This course introduces students to the basic concepts of product marketing, which includes strategies involving product design, pricing, promotion and placement. Students will examine how trends, issues, economic changes, and information technology influence consumer buying habits. Students will engage in marketing research, analyze marketing strategies for specific products, and produce a marketing plan for a product of their choice. Information and Communication Technology: The Digital Environment, Grade 11 - Open BTA 3O This course prepares students for the digital environment. Using a hands-on approach, students will further develop information and communication technology skills through the use of common business software applications. The concept and operation of e-business will be explored, and students will design and create an e-business website. The skills developed in this course will prepare students for success in the workplace and/or postsecondary studies.

Financial Accounting Fundamentals, Grade 11 University/College BAF 3M See how managers create financial data to use in decision-making. Learn why knowledge of accounting continues to be a critical component of a successful businesspersons resume, in our ever-changing global economy. Everything in this course has a direct real world application. We do what Accountants do. Students will record transactions, read source documents, create financial statements and evaluate findings. Classroom learning comes to life during the hands-on business simulation. Students will apply their learning, using technology, and run the Accounting department for a typical small start-up business. In short, important real-world business concepts are explored in a student friendly way Financial Accounting Principles, Grade 12 University/College BAT 4M This course expands on concepts introduced in BAF 3M. Now that students know how to process transactions and create financial data, they will broaden their perspectives by using the information to make management decisions and recommendation. This course introduces accounting for partnerships and corporations, sources of finance, and other accounting methods for assets. Students will study real world accounting cases and financial statements of current corporations, practicing the skills they will need in all business leadership positions. Creating a framework for understanding accounting and its role in business management. Prerequisite: Grade 11 Financial Accounting Fundamentals (BAF3M), University/College International Business Fundamentals, Grade 12 University/College BBB 4M This course provides an overview of the importance of international business and trade in the global economy and explores the factors that influence success in international markets. Students will learn about the techniques and strategies associated with marketing, distribution, effective communication and global business trends. Students will get the opportunity to complete a hands-on project where they simulate exporting a product/service internationally. This course prepares students for postsecondary programs in business, including international business, marketing, and management.

Information and Communication Technology: Multimedia Solutions, Grade 12 College BTX 4C Through various team based projects, students will have opportunities to integrate business software applications and multimedia. Students will develop their understanding of electronic business and e-commerce environments. Students will also discuss computer related issues in ethics and technology. Prerequisite: Information and Communication Technology: The Digital Environment (BTA 3O), Grade 11 - Open Business Leadership: Management Fundamentals, Grade 12 University/College BOH 4M This course focuses on the development of leadership skills used in managing a successful business. Students will analyze the role of a leader in business, with a focus on decision making, management of group dynamics, workplace stress and conflict, motivation of employees, and planning. Effective business communication skills, ethics, and social responsibility are also emphasized. In addition to theory, this course offers hands on learning where students will have the opportunity to plan, organize, and manage an event within the class/school over the course of the semester. Such events have included: Carnival, Graduation Reception, Holiday Buy Out Event Personal Life Management, Grade 12 Open HIP 4O This course focuses on preparing students for living independently and working successfully with others. Students will learn to manage their personal relationships and resources to meet their basic needs for independent living. They will also learn and research their personal, legal, and financial responsibilities. Students will develop and apply interpersonal skills in order to make responsible personal and occupational choices. The course emphasizes the achievement of expectations through practical experiences. This is a course where we apply theories learned through a combination of hands-on projects such as: Financial Planning Decision making regarding major purchases Planning and creating healthy meals

Analyzing Current Economic Issues, Grade 12 University CIA 4U In this course students will explore how human behaviour impacts our economy through choices on spending, purchasing, saving, and our choice of government. Students will examine the role of government and economic policies, stakeholders, and economic institutions. The course will look at various sources to gather financial and economic information, analyse research, and make recommendations. Students will learn the principles of microeconomics (the study of economic parts) and macroeconomics (the study of economics as a whole). Prerequisite: Any university or university/college preparation course in Canadian world studies, English, or social sciences and humanities. Entertainment and Sports Marketing, Grade 12 University IDC 4U Students examine topics such as: trends in the Entertainment and Sports Marketing industry; examining features and benefits of products/events; product placement and event venues; ticket pricing/sales; advertising/promotion strategies; sponsorship/endorsements; event planning; and ethical/legal issues. Individually and collaboratively students develop skills that prepare them for a specialty in marketing in post-secondary and for real-life events in the entertainment and sports industries. There is an emphasis on research, communication skills, teamwork skills and event organization and management. Course Pre-requisite: Any grade11 university or university/college preparation course in English or Canadian world studies. Any grade11 business course is strongly recommended.
