MASTER OF ENGINEERING (MICROELECTRONICS) PART TIME PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES 1. To provide a formal framework for professional development of working engineers so that they can up-date their knowledge in microelectronic engineering and upgrade their competencies for a range of roles in industry, particularly to key technical managerial and research positions within the industry. PROGRAMME SUMMARY The semiconductor equipment and materials industries are an integral part of the worldwide strategic industries such as automobiles, telecommunications, aerospace and electronics. The spectacular advance in the technology development and applications of ICs and high performance electronic materials and devices have fuelled the explosive growth in the field in microelectronics for the last 30 years. The demand for high speed, broadband communications, the dramatic and unprecedented growth of the Internet, the emergence of intelligent systems and the extensive use of Multimedia and Information Technology have further propelled research and development efforts into creating highly complex, advanced and reliable miniature electronic devices. Similarly, these factors have continually driven and revolutionised microelectronics technology and the microelectronics industry.
Malaysia has always enjoyed its fair share of the microelectronics boom with its mammoth electronic industries, well- positioned in strategic locations such as Penang, Klang Valley, Senawang and Kulim High-Tech Park. In such a dynamic industry, technological advances occur so rapidly that it is an onerous task for most engineers today to keep pace with all that is happening and all that is current. At the Faculty of Engineering, Multimedia University, we understand the needs of engineers and what is expected of them in the local and international electronic industries. In the Master of Engineering (Microelectronics) programme, we offer a well- balanced academic and practical learning structure especially for engineers who wish to upgrade and update themselves in microelectronic technologies ranging from the theory of physical phenomena for electronic materials and devices, computer-aided design of ICs, numerical modelling and simulation of material properties and device performances, to the practical aspects of device processing and characterisation technology for advanced discrete components and ICs.
