SPONSOR A CHILD - Reshape a Future Dear Friend(s), This appeal is to draw your kind attention towards the unprivileged children of our society who need your help and support to start their life afresh. As we know, millions of children of our country are denied the simple joy of childhood, love, care, protection and so often the life itself. Deprived of the basic amenities of life, they do not know, when and how their precious childhood gets lost. Is it not shocking and shame for all of us that even after achieving independence in 1947, every second Indian child in the age group of 6-14 years, still has no access to primary education, let alone other rights and privileges? We come across such children in our everyday life, but hardly we give it a look to do something for them. We must consider ourselves fortunate as we could so easily have been among them. Why cannot we give our children a decent life? The solution lies with us. God has spared you and me not only to live for ourselves, but also a little bit for others as well. We must not shy away from certain minimum social responsibilities. With your suggestions and support over the years, we are starting SPONSOR A CHILD programme for such unprivileged children which includes impoverished slum children, physically and mentally challenged, sexually abused, child labourers, orphaned and abandoned children. Government is trying on its part but their efforts are not proving enough to bring these unprivileged children to the mainstream of national development. They are like wild flowers, waiting for someone to explore. They need outside support besides government. Let us come forward, join hands, sponsor needy children to explore their talents, and help them to lead a decent life. Your genial contribution in providing a sponsorship can reshape the life of a child and we can surely bring smiles to some faces. Their problems are gigantic and there is no overnight solution. But with each passing day and our resolute efforts, the goal will be nearer and nearer. In the words of Gurudev Rabindra Nath Tagore, "every child comes with the message that God is not yet discouraged of man." All is not lost yet and there is definitely hope for them. This is just the beginning and together we have to go miles and miles... With warm regards, Sincerely Yours, (Saila Behera) Secretary, Basundhara

BASUNDHARA'S SPONSOR A CHILD PROGRAMME BACKGROUND - An Overview Basundhara arranges regular health camps twice weekly for the children living in slums. During interaction with the slum dwellers and children, our activists found some children inclined towards study, so also their parents. But due to situational adversities and precarious financial conditions, the parents can not but force their children to adopt working life prematurely. A lot of school dropouts are a direct result of this. More often than not, these children are forced to undertake various types of works, some of which are extremely hazardous. Their family members see them as bread earners, which they actually are not since these children are usually exploited by their employers who pay a very negligible amount or even absolutely nothing in some cases. Now the situation is such that the children themselves are craving for education-both formal and vocational. Personal interaction with them reveals that there are quite a handful of hidden talents in various aspects among them. All they need is timely assistance an encouragement. To help them in realising their potential, we are starting this programme with your support- SPONSOR A CHILD. OBJECTIVES The programme aims at bringing back those children to schools, who for some reason or the other could not have started schooling or have been made dropouts. Back in school means they will get a chance for their overall development. Our objective is to provide them a decent childhood to the extent possible, in terms of education, food, clothing, health, sanitation, recreation, etc. and bring them back to the mainstream of national development. We will be only a medium for channelising your generous contributions in reaching these children and simultaneously ensure that your hard-earned money is properly utilised.
