General information Ecolab Certificates ifm electronic, one of the internationally leading sensor manufacturers, provides application solutions for all important areas of the food industry. The sensors in this market segment are exposed to extremely rugged environments. Therefore the requirements for the sensors used are extremely high. ifm electronic had independent tests on the sensors of the efector m T-series, OGwetline, OJ as well as the ProcessLine splitters and AS-i flatcables carried out by an independent supplier of cleaning agents, the company Ecolab. In their certificates ifm electronic and Ecolab certify the resistance of the tested ifm sensors to the detergents used in the test under the specified conditions.. efector m T-series OG-wetline ProcessLine IP 69K test Fraunhofer institute 90 IP 69K ingress resistance test The goal of this test is to simulate highpressure cleaning requirements as for example those given in the food industry. In the test fixture, the module and the connector are subjected to a water jet of 80-100 bar at a temperature of 80 C. The duration of each cleaning cycle is 30 seconds. The spray nozzle is located at a defined angle and at a distance of 10 to 15 cm from the test sample. 10-15 cm 60 30 0 IP 69K test acc. DIN 40050 part 9: 30 seconds cycles, 14-16 liter per minute, water 80 C. 8

General information Standards and approvals CE With the CE marking the manufacturer documents that the units sold by him adhere to the European directives for specified electrical equipment. EHEDG The EHEDG (European Hygienic Equipment Design Group) prepares guidelines for Europe concerning the requirements for measuring systems in machines of the food and pharmaceutical industry. Units with the EHEDG marking have been tested and approved for the food and pharmaceutical industry in accordance with these guidelines. 3A Units with this marking comply with the hygienic standards applicable in the USA. They are approved for use in hygienic applications in the dairy industry. UL / CSA or culus Units with this marking meet the requirements of UL (Underwriters Laboratories Inc.) and CSA (Canadian Standards Association). In many cases this approval is a prerequisite for access to the North American market. culus is a combined approval and corresponds to the two individual approvals CSA and UL. CCC CCC (China Compulsory Certification) is a mandatory Chinese certificate for certain products used in China. The products concerned are listed in a catalogue as defined by the Chinese authorities. Proximity sensors with a voltage range higher than 36 V are subject to certification. FDA FDA (Food and Drug Administration) is a US-American supervisory authority for food and drugs. This authority grants approvals for products and materials used in the food and pharmaceutical industries. DKD The Deutscher Kalibrierdienst (DKD) is an association of calibration laboratories of industrial firms, research institutes, technical authorities, inspection and testing institutes. The DKD calibration certificates prove traceability to national standards as required in ISO 9000 and the ISO/IEC 17025. They also serve as a metrological basis for the control of measurement and test equipment within the framework of quality management. 9

General information Manifold Flow plate for manually changing between different lines. Inductive sensors of the T series detect the position of a swing bend on a distribution plate. From page 20 Quarter-turn actuators Pneumatically-operated actuators (quarter-turn) for the automatic triggering of butterfly valves. Inductive dual sensors of the IND series provide feedback of the position. From page 48 Pneumatic cylinders Pneumatic cylinders are used in many areas of the food industry. ifm cylinder sensors with the high protection rating IP 69K meet the high requirements and reliably detect the piston positions. From page 42 Manway monitoring Fail-safe inductive sensors of category 4 and SIL3 detect the stainless steel tank lid without contact and without any specific counterpart (manway monitoring). From page 44 10

General information Detection of pot lids In food processing photoelectric sensors are used more and more often in wet areas. The new photoelectric sensors of the OG wetline series in stainless steel housing with protection IP 69K are perfectly suited for these applications. From page 54 PET bottles The transparent material PET is used more and more often in the beverage industry. In the past the adjustment of the sensors to the application was very complex. A novel system of photoelectric sensors with polarisation filter (O5G series) with very fine prismatic reflectors is used. From page 56 Cheese plant Cleaning processes with aggressive cleaning agents most commonly occur in cheese plants. The photoelectric sensors need to be absolutely ingress-resistant in these conditions. From page 54 Valve manifolds /rising stem valves Valve manifolds offer a number of filling and emptying routes without having to open pipes or manually recoupling panels. Inductive sensors or full-metal sensors of the T series with sensing faces of stainless steel (316S12) or PEEK are used for detecting the valve position. From page 34 11

General information Run-dry protection When conveying liquid food such as dairy products or beverages the product flow has to be monitored. Flow sensors of the SI6000 series monitor the pump to avoid dry running. From page 60 Keg line Kegs need to be cleaned before they are filled. These kegging machines are part of the secondary systems as they have no direct contact to the food. Special ifm pressure sensors of the PE series monitor the correct pressure of the cleaning agent. From page 80 Homogeniser Homogenisation is used for the disruption of fat globules in the milk into much smaller ones and for their dispersion. Fur this purpose the product is put under pressure in the homogeniser. A valve regulates the pressure. The special type PY is used to detect the homogenisation pressure. From page 84 Level Depending on their function we distinguish between different tanks such as storage tanks, silo tanks, intermediate storage tanks, mixing tanks, and process tanks. ifm pressure sensors of the PI, PM or PH series are used for the detection of the level and the system pressure. From page 68 12

General information Filter monitoring Filters are required in nearly all production processes. They are used for cleaning a product (nano-, ultra- and microfiltration) or for the concentration of solutions (removal of water). ifm pressure sensors monitor uppipe and downpipe of the filter. From page 68 Pasteurisation For the life of the milk it is of high importance to keep the correct exposure time and temperature of 60 C to 70 C. The ifm temperature transmitters of types TAD and TAP do not require the usual calibration. From page 98 Heat exchanger In indirect heating a heat exchanger is used for the heat transmission. We distinguish between plate heat exchanger, tubular heat exchanger and scraped-surface heat exchanger. To monitor the process temperature hygienic ifm temperature sensors of type TM in conjunction with the evaluation electronics of type TR can be integrated in the application. From page 90 Process temperature The monitoring of temperature is amongst the most important measuring tasks in the food industry. The calibration-free temperature transmitters of the TAP series communicate via the established Profibus PA bus system. The device supports the Profibus PA profile 3.01 temperature transmitter. From page 98 13

General information Cheese press In cheese production different types of presses are used. Pressure is used to withdraw the remaining liquid from the curd. The compressed air of the pneumatic cylinders is monitored by the efector metris compressed air meter (SD series). From page 66 Separator Separators can be used in many areas of the food industry. In milk processing they are, for example, used for separating milk into skimmed milk and cream. The efector octavis vibration diagnostic unit monitors the bearing of the motor. Maintenance measures can then be precisely planned and plant uptime can be increased. From page 106 Vibration diagnosis Critical machines such as the homogeniser mean high standstill costs in the event of a failure. The efector octavis vibration diagnosis unit continuously monitors the system condition and thus enables preventive maintenance. From page 106 Rising stem valves These valves are actuated by a linear stroke. As an alternative to the conventional solution with inductive sensors the efector valvis rising stem valve sensor detects the valve position. efector valvis signals up to three valve positions to the controller: valve open, valve closed and any interim position such as seat lift. From page 52 14

General information Position feedback for rising stem valves The set ZZ0214 (e.g. Alfa Laval) contains all that is required for quick and easy automation of a rising stem valve. The items supplied cover the efector valvis rising stem valve sensor, suitable adapter and the actuating element in stainless steel. From page 52 Ice cream production A number of efector pmd photoelectric distance sensors (O1D series) are placed in a key position for ice cream production. Because of the long ranges they can be installed outside the possibly dirty environment. From page 58 AS-interface AS-interface has become the established standard in traditional mechanical engineering. As a manufacturer-independent standard for binary field bus communication it replaces the previous parallel wiring. The bus system is used for the connection of actuators and sensors of the lowest field level like the ProcessLine field module of stainless steel with protection IP 69K. From page 122 Pump diagnosis The compact PIM pressure sensor monitors the static system pressure and the dynamic pressure pulsation in the medium.
