Digital tachographs are here New legislation introducing digital tachographs came into force on 1st May 2006. From this time, all newly registered in-scope goods and passenger vehicles must be equipped with a digital tachograph. Be aware of the new requirements The introduction of digital tachographs means changes for all parties, including a requirement to download, evaluate and archive digital tachograph data. For drivers this means learning how to operate this new technology in order to avoid unnecessary problems and downtime. Small businesses and fleet managers also need to get ready for digital tachographs. Our solutions support all aspects of digital tachographs Building on many years of experience in the field of tachographs, we have been involved in the development of digital tachographs right from the start. That is why we are able to offer powerful, user-friendly solutions that allow you to comply with new legal obligations fully while offering convenient handling, easy, flexible archiving and analysis solutions, plus maximum data security. Start out fully prepared and well equipped In addition to technical equipment such as digital tachograph units, we offer special download and storage media as well as flexible options for archiving and evaluating digital tachograph data. In order to make it as easy as possible for drivers and fleet managers to enter the age of digital tachographs we have developed special training products in conjunction with our partners which facilitate learning how to use the new technology. For example, our programmes tell you everything you need to know about driver cards and data archiving. Find out about the new technology This brochure provides an overview of the new legislation and its implications for drivers. We also present our solutions for digital tachographs and provide more detailed information about training. 2 3
Be aware of your obligations and meet mandatory requirements with maximum ease Digital tachographs are replacing conventional tachographs with paper charts. The new systems digitally record data such as driving and rest times, speed and rpm, as well as information needed for calibration. The DTCO 1381 has been developed by working closely with the relevant authorities and meets all legal requirements. Driver card Company card Obligations for companies _ Obtain driver cards _ Obtain a company card (or multiple cards as required) _ Comply with legal driving and rest times _ Download mass memory data from digital tachographs using the company card _ Download driver card data _ Store/archive downloaded data In future, data from the mass memory units and driver cards associated with digital tachographs must be dealt with in the same way that tachograph charts from analogue tachographs have previously been evaluated and stored. This will be necessary as soon as a vehicle with a digital tachograph joins a fleet. Archiving obligations Previously, paper charts from analogue tachographs had to be held for 1 year. The following archiving obligations are defined for digital tachographs: _ Driver card data must be downloaded regularly _ Vehicle (mass memory) data must be downloaded regularly _ All archived data must be held for a period of at least 1 year Obligatory supervision The EEC regulations require the following: The transport manager must ensure that the directives on driving times, breaks from driving and rest times are complied with in accordance with Article 6, 7 Paragraph 1, 2, 4 and 5, as well as Article 8, 9 and 12 of Regulation (EEC) No. 3820/85. Article 15 of Regulation (EEC) No. 3820/85 also applies. Assigning access rights via smart cards Special smart cards are used to determine access to certain types of digital tachograph data: Driver cards store driver activities, events and faults or changes of vehicle, while a company card is used to prevent unauthorised access to mass memory data. Control officers require a control card to access the system. Authorised workshops can activate the calibration function on the DTCO 1381 using their workshop card. Applications for digital tachograph cards: Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) Swansea SA99 1ST Analogue tachographs Digital tachographs _ Tachograph charts to be held for 1 year _ Driver card data must be downloaded regularly _ Vehicle (mass memory) data must be downloaded regularly _ Archived data must also be backed up _ All archived data must be held for a period of at least 1 year Important note: The legislation requires that for all newly registered vehicles, the vehicle registration number must be entered into the digital tachograph by an authorised workshop within 14 days of registration. 4 5

How the DTCO 1381 works After calibration the DTCO is immediately ready for use. System calibration is carried out by authorised service partners. Vehiclerelated data is stored in an integrated mass memory which has storage capacity for approx. 365 days. Driver-related data is stored on a personalised driver card (smart card) inserted into the digital tachograph before each journey or shift begins. When the corresponding smart card is inserted, all data can be viewed on the display, printed out or transferred to external data storage media via an interface. The mass memory, printer paper and smart cards therefore replace the tachograph charts previously used to record data. mass memory. The DTCO 1381 is already enabled for future solutions such as connection to an on-board computer or telematics system. Other functionality and options for the DTCO 1381 _ Various display colours _ Possible to change buttons and front panel _ Fully automatic smart card readers _ More than 20 EU languages available _ Easy to change the paper roll _ Two status inputs _ View rpm profile and speed profile _ Automatic warning signal after 4 hrs 15 mins driving time An international yet local presence Thanks to a broad network of local offices, we offer comprehensive international service covering all aspects of the countryspecific introduction of digital tachographs. This is backed by many years of experience and the international coverage provided by over 9,400 partner workshops. Get ready for digital tachographs Our training products provide all staff with a proper introduction to digital tachographs. As experts in the field of tachographs, we help drivers become familiar with the new technology, thereby avoiding any unnecessary delay. Computer-based training In conjunction with our partners we offer individual computer-based training programmes to provide a thorough introduction to digital tachographs. Emphasis has been placed on tailoring content to the needs of specific users. To achieve the desired level of information, companies also receive a CD-ROM containing further useful resources. Simulation software for the DTCO 1381 is the ideal accompaniment to the above training. An interactive program on CD- ROM fully simulates the operation and functionality of digital tachographs. Training package for drivers A separate training package has been developed specifically for drivers. This gives drivers the opportunity to practise using digital tachographs via a simulation game. Content: _ Learning program on CD-ROM _ Booklet in 6 languages (approx. 25 pages per language) _ Interactive simulation game to help drivers learn how to use digital tachographs Training provides safety and security Drivers who have not received basic training run the risk of operating the digital equipment incorrectly and disregarding relevant statutory regulations. This can add to everyday work stress, which already involves coping with traffic, meeting deadlines, loading, unloading and worrying about costs and rest time regulations. Anyone contravening the law even unknowingly risks being fined as a result of roadside checks. Good training supports the introduction of digital tachographs and helps make things both safer and less complicated for all involved. Training package benefits _ Users can learn at their own pace at a time to suit them. _ By being independent from trainers and seminar rooms, the package can also be used outside the office. _ E-learning can be used in combination with practical training seminars or to prepare for such events (blended learning). _ The accompanying reference booklet helps fill in any knowledge gaps quickly.
