Tiering Classificatin Tier classificatins prvide a basis fr cmparing r describing the functinality, capacity, and cst f a data center's verall architecture. Tier classificatins fcus n the availability f the entire facility including pwer, cnnectivity and cling cmpnents. Tier classificatins als describe the degree t which the facility is resilient t failures f mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) systems. Resilience t failures is prvided by redundancy and architecture f the verall facility design. A Tier- 1 facility is the least resilient and a Tier- 4 is the mst resilient. Tier- 1 - Basic Data Center Tier- 1 facilities have n redundant capacity cmpnents. This type f facility prvides basic pwer and cling with n excess capacity fr backup r failver. There is n redundancy in the MEP distributin paths. In a Tier- 1 facility, unplanned utage r failure f a capacity cmpnent r distributin element will impact systems and custmers. Maintenance needed fr the MEP infrastructure t replace cmpnents r d utility wrk impacts the facility just as if there were an unplanned utage. Tier- 1 sites typically experience tw separate 12- hur site- wide shutdwns per year fr repair wrk. Additinally, Tier- 1 sites typically experience 1.2 equipment r distributin cmpnent failures n average each year. This equates t 28.8 hurs f dwntime per year, r 99.67% availability. Tier- 2 - Redundant Data Center A Tier- 2 data center has redundant capacity cmpnents, but nly a single nn- redundant distributin path serving the data prcessing equipment. The benefit f this level is that any redundant capacity cmpnent can be remved frm service n a planned basis withut causing the data prcessing t be shut dwn. 6

Tier- 3 - Redundant Data Center with Cncurrent Maintenance A Tier- 3 data center has redundant capacity cmpnents and multiple independent distributin paths serving the data prcessing ftprint. There is sufficient MEP capacity t meet the needs f the data prcessing systems even when ne f these redundant MEP cmpnents has been remved frm the infrastructure. Tier- 3 data center can supprt maintenance activities and sme unplanned events withut interruptin t the cmputing systems. Because f cncurrent maintenance capability prvided by Tier- 3 facilities, n annual shutdwns fr rutine maintenance are required. Tier- 3 data centers have unplanned events ttaling nly 1.6 hurs per year. Tier- 3 sites deliver 99.98% availability. Tier- 4 - Fault- Tlerant Data Center Tier- 4 sites have multiple, independent, and physically separate systems that each have redundant capacity cmpnents and multiple, independent, diverse and active distributin paths supprting all data prcessing. In a Tier- 4 data center, any single failure f an MEP cmpnent r distributin path has n negative impact t the data prcessing systems. Facility- related failures that impact the data prcessing equipment are statistically reduced t 0.8 hurs per year at Tier- 4 sites which yields 99.99% availability.
