Autism Authorization/Certificate Registration Requirements Complete all areas of the registration. Certify accuracy by signing and dating the registration form. This form is for course registration only. If you intend to apply for the Autism, added Authorization, you will also need to apply for admission to Brandman University. Documents required for course registration: Employment verification form (attached) indicating type of credential, Certificate of Clearance and TB clearance. OR Official transcript indicating award of bachelor s degree or copy of current teaching credential, current negative TB test and Certificate of Clearance o A person whose TB test is positive can submit results from a chest x-ray verifying the candidate does not have active tuberculosis o OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS: If you are NOT a credentialed teacher: Candidates without a teaching credential must provide official transcripts. Students interested in the added Authorization should provide that intent information by the beginning of the fourth course in the autism authorization series: Option 1: added Authorization, Eligible candidates are Those with a current CTC designated, education specialist credential, mild/moderate o Certificate of Eligibility, or o Level 1 Credential, orlevel 2 Credential Those with an Early Childhood Special Education credential written to 2009 CTC Standards o Preliminary Credential o Clear Credential Those with a Communication Development credential written to 2009 CTC Standards o Preliminary Credential o Clear Credential

To be recommended for the Autism, added Authorization, candidates must successfully complete each of the 4 BU courses with a grade of B or better. Courses in which a B- or lower is earned, must be retaken to be used towards the Autism, added Authorization. Except for those policies and procedures specifically described in this section, all policies and procedures relevant to credential programs apply to the Autism, added Authorization. Option 2: Certificate in Prerequisite: Bachelor s degree. This Option will prepare completers from a variety of backgrounds, including education, nursing, psychology, law enforcement, human resources, and more, to support children, teens, and young adults with ASD. Candidates without a teaching credential must provide official transcripts. Please begin the process now if enrollment is anticipated for Spring II, 2010. Admissions: You must be admitted to Brandman University to obtain the added Authorization. You may register for courses prior to being admitted to the University; however, course registration and completion of courses is not a guarantee of admissions. Admissions Requirements: 1. Eligible candidates are those with at least one of the following valid, CTC designated credentials: Speech-Language Pathology Clinical or Rehabilitative Services Credential with Special Class Authorization Initially issued effective September 27, 1997 Education Specialist, Mild/Moderate o Internship Credential, or o Level I Credential, or o Level II Credential Deaf and Hard of Hearing Physical and Health Impairment Visual Impairment Communication Handicapped Initially issued 1976 to September 26, 1997 Learning Handicapped Physically Handicapped

2. Applicants must complete and submit a Brandman University application. Questions regarding the eligibility of specific credentials initially issued 1961 to 1976 should be directed to the Teacher Accreditation Department at 949-754-1333. To be awarded the authorization, you must be admitted to Brandman University. Please note admission requirements for this program are different for this program than for other Brandman University programs. Registration for the Autism courses can be processed prior to being accepted into Brandman University. Course Descriptions: Introduction to : Causes and Characteristics The course is primarily designed for special educators who desire increased knowledge and skills relative to supporting students diagnosed with. It may be taken as a stand-alone course, or in partial completion of an Autism Certificate, Autism, added Authorization, and/or the Master of Arts in Special Education, emphasis in Autism. Educational Planning Issues for Students with The first portion of this course probes the neurobiological and cognitive issues experienced by individuals with autism, particularly as they apply to program planning and service delivery. Proactive measures for incorporating occupational, physical and speech therapists into the academic team are also addressed, as well as researched best practices relative to working as part of a multidisciplinary team. : Assessment and Strategies for Success, I This course examines the behavioral, developmental, and blended approaches in understanding and modifying the behaviors of students with Autism. Candidates will be given an extensive set of skills in assessing, developing, and implementing behavioral interventions in the classroom. The use of Functional Analysis, Applied Behavior Analysis, and Functional Behavior Assessment techniques will be explored. Each Candidate is required to complete 20 hours of supervised field experience specific to her/his area of study. : Assessment and Strategies for Success, II This course covers the evaluation of learning needs for with an emphasis on resources and best practices for addressing academic issues at all functional levels. Additionally, the course will include guidelines for using a variety of assessment tools to design IEP goals, modifications and adaptations, and classroom strategies. Particular attention will be paid to the needs of students with Asperger s Syndrome in general education settings. Each Candidate is required to complete 20 hours of supervised field experience specific to his/her area of study.
