V olume 4, Is s u e 4 STEM Day Page 3 Eggs, Bridges, Coasters! By: Advisor Bridges! Crashing Egg Carrying Vehicle! Rollercoasters! These were the sights and sounds on January 29, as Briggs Junior High held its inaugural STEM Project Day, along with an afternoon Superbowl tailgate party. All students in 7th and 8th grade got together in the MPR to form groups and do some hands-on science project problem solving. The projects were threefold, consisting of: building bridges capable of supporting textbooks, using only limited resources of straws and tape; constructing vehicles that would roll down an incline and crash into a wall, but would also protect their raw egg passengers from breaking in the collision; and erecting newspaper and tape rollercoasters of all shapes and sizes, using only natural forces to convey a marble through the coaster. There were experiments for each project: testing how many eggs survived the crash, how many books could a bridge hold before collapse, and how long it took a marble to reach the bottom of a coaster. After the science events in the morning, nachos were provided by Renaissance for lunch, followed by the tailgate party. At the tailgate there were all kinds of games and activities, highlighted by a 3 on 3 flag football tournament. It is a pretty safe thing to say that a good time was had by all, whether it was learning and building in the morning, or exercising, playing, or hanging out in the afternoon.

Page 4 Crime Couples/Pick Up Lines Criminal Couples By: Max Cordova I N SI DER Bonnie & Clyde Bonnie was a good girl that fell for a bad guy. The couple traveled the country robbing banks, stores and gas stations. They are probably the most well known criminal couple. Their crime spree ended when they were shot by police in the desert. However there were no witnesses. Amanda Baggus & David Lehane This British couple kidnapped a man from their neighborhood. They kept him as their prisoner in their shed and tortured him. Forced to be their slave, he died as their prisoner, and the two were convicted of murder and were imprisoned for 10 years. Pick-Up Lines...Lame or Not? Caril Fugate & Charles Starkweather Starkweather was plagued by physical and emotional illness. His legs were disfigured, which made people believe that this caused him to think that everything was meaningless, but he found pleasure in being with Caril. The two murdered Fugate s family members, local teens, and 11 people across the country, sending Starkweather to execution and Fugate to 17 years in prison. Julius and Ethel Rosenberg Julius and Ethel were traitors. These two were the first people in the U.S. to be condemned for conspiracy to commit espionage. They were accused of plotting to share knowledge of the atomic bomb with the Soviet Union. The two were executed despite Pablo Picasso and Pope Pius XII asking for the couple to be forgiven. Raymond Fernandez was a con artist who would find lonely women who were seeking a mate in newspaper personal ads. Raymond would usually steal from these women, and most of these victims would be too embarrassed to report it. When he answered Martha Beck s ad she showed up at his door to abandon her children and become his partner in crime. All in all 17 women were killed, sending them both to execution. V olume 4, Is s u e 4 Superbowl/Val. Recipe Super Bowl XLIX Valentine Recipe By: Raymond Ramos S u p e r Bowl XLIX is being held in Arizona on Sunday, February 1, 2015, at 6:30 PM ET. N e w England Patriots will be facing the defending champion Seattle Seahawks. Both teams match up better than you think, as they both entered the playoffs with an outstanding record of 12-4. Both teams have amazing quarterbacks, and their rushing is just as dangerous. The game should be close, the Seahawks are known for their talent on both sides of the football. The Legion Of Boom are what Seattle call their 4 main weapons on the defense. This could cause Patriots Quarterback Tom Brady to have a difficult time passing the ball. On the other side, Patriots also have their own personal weapons, but have no nicknames. Patriots have on their side, the sport s greatest, Darrelle Revis, at the cornerback position, who is known to give quarterbacks a tough time. Both running backs, Marshawn Lynch and Legarette Blount put up incredible stats in both Championship games, are tough to stop and will be key players at the game. The last time these two teams faced each other was on October 14, 2012, where the Seahawks won 24-23. After the game, Seahawks Cornerback, Richard Sherman tweeted out a picture u mad bro, that caused a huge commotion on the internet. But, Tom Brady is looking to win their second meeting. However, can Richard Sherman come out on top versus Tom Brady again? That is to been seen. As the Super Bowl is near, both teams prepare for a dogfight as many are calling it. This very game can be an interesting game to watch. We will soon find out who will be the champion of the National Football League. (At submission time, this game had not been played.) Valentine History History of Valentine s V olume 4, Is s u e 4 Page 9 Day By: Andrea Bucio Valentine s Day Massacre By: Jesse Nieves When you hear the words Valentine s Day, what is the first thing that pops into your mind? Candy? Cards? Hearts? What about church or saint? No? Well, believe it or not, those two words have a lot to do with Valentine s Day. So here it is, the history of Valentine s Day. Once there lived a man named St. Valentine. He served as a Roman priest during the time when an emperor named Claudias, who persecuted the church, reigned. The emperor had an edict that banned the marriage of young individuals, which was based on a theory that unwed soldiers fought better than married soldiers, because married soldiers often worried about their wives and families. Apparently, no one really cared about the emperor s law, because soon St. Valentine had young couples lining up at the church s door, asking him to marry them within the Christian church. Valentine liked the idea that they wanted to wed within the Christian church, so he secretly married them. The priest was eventually caught and imprisoned for performing marriage ceremonies without the emperor s permission. While he was in prison, he met a man named Asterius, who had a blind daughter. The saint prayed with him and healed his daughter with such amazing effect that Asterius became Christian as a result. St. Valentine was later sentenced to a three-part execution in the year 269 AD. The poor guy was stoned, beaten, and decapitated because of his belief in Christian marriage. The last words he wrote were in a letter he wrote to Asterius s daughter, the signature that inspired romantics around the world later being, from your Valentine. To this day we keep the story alive by celebrating Valentine s Day and marrying within the church. Gang conflict controlled the streets of Chicago throughout the late 1920 s, as chief gangster Al Capone tried to enhance control by annihilating his rivals in the illegal marketing of bootlegging, gambling, and prostitution. On February 14, 1929 in a garage on the city s north side, seven men corresponding with Irish gangster George Bugs Moran were shot to death by multiple men dressed as policemen. The St. Valentine s Day Massacre was never associated to Capone, but he was generally believed to have been accountable for the murders. From 1924 to 1930, Chicago began to have a reputation for violence. Al Scarface Capone took over from his boss, Johnny Torrio in 1925. In 1924 Torrio was badly wounded in an assassination attempt. Capone s income from bootlegging and speakeasies were about 60 million a year. One of Capone s biggest enemy was George Bugs Moran who operated on the North side of Chicago. On February 14, seven people associated with Moran were shot in a straight line facing the wall of the garage. An estimation of 70 rounds were shot. Yearbooks are on sale!!! Horoscopes V olume 4, Is s u e 4 Page 11 9/23 10/22 Try to do something to stimulate your brain. A poetry night at a coffee shop will get your grey matter buzzing more than the caffeine will. You're in the perfect frame of mind to benefit from intellectual pursuits. 3/21 4/19 It's not a good day to put things in writing. Think of yourself as a lawyer, ready with a full arsenal of objections and requests to put off proceedings until later. More time will give you space to maneuver. 10/23 11/21 4/20 5/20 A rational approach to problems serves you well. If you seize your logical powers and enjoy yourself, the day might be a lot of fun. But if you let your own talents bore you, your day could be horrid. You're like a hot potato being tossed from one pair of hands to the next. Of course, you're not nearly so puckered and wrinkled, but you're still too toasty to handle! Other people should know what to expect. 11/22 12/21 Put yourself into a situation where different conversations are buzzing at once. You'll be able to hop from one train of thought to another like a 19th-century bank robber. Chat away and make friends. 5/21 6/20 Today may be frustrating and even frenetic, but at least you'll never be bored. Find a friend and keep busy by racing between projects and destinations. You'll feel important, even essential, as you keep the bustle going. 12/22 1/19 You're sick of routine and ready to do something out of the ordinary. Culinary experiments are a great choice, but use an established national cuisine to guide your efforts. Wasabi and jelly just don't mix. 6/21 7/22 You have great insight into behavior. A question about the way a friend is acting may set you off on a psychology lecture that's just a little too much for your audience. Be intellectual, but don't go overboard. 1/20 2/18 Your emotions are weighing you down, like the heavy pails on either side of a milkmaid's shoulders. Take the time to stop and have a serious conversation with a friend. You'll feel lighter immediately. 7/23 8/22 Did you get to school this morning only to realize you spilled cereal all down your shirt? Don't let it throw you. It's only a minor detail and you have the rest of the day ahead of you. 2/19 3/20 Don't be surprised if someone decides that your nickname should be 'Speedy' or 'Quicksilver' today. Your rapid responses, whether on a racetrack or in a debate, will shock your competitors. 8/23 9/22 Think twice before you trade with a friend today. Whether it's sandwiches or bikes, the value of your possession isn't indicated by appearance alone. Be savvy about estimating its price -- get a second opinion.
