MentalHealthServices OffersThreeTypesofService Emergency & Acute Outpatient Services Inpatient Services Rehabilitation Services Emergency & Outpatient Services Emergency Crisis Service Through our Emergency Crisis Program at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, anyone whose life or well being is drastically threatened and who requires immediate care can receive emergency mental health services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Acute Outpatient Services Acute Outpatient Services include adult mental health clinics located in hospital sites or in the community, the Day Centre Program, an Eating Disorder Program, a Sex Offender Program and Child and Adolescent Services. Mental Health Clinics Located in Sydney, Glace Bay, North Sydney, New Waterford and Inverness on a full time basis, and in Cheticamp and Baddeck on a part-time basis, these clinics provide assessment and treatment for adults suffering from a wide range of mental health problems.

Day Centre Program Our short term daily program is designed for adults with serious emotional disorders. Individuals in this program need intensive treatment but do not require 24 hour supervision or care. Structured group and individual sessions are provided by a multidisciplinary team to help patients cope with emotional, social and interpersonal crises. Eating Disorders Program Assessment, diagnostic and treatment services are offered to individuals with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and related conditions. Early identification and prevention initiatives as well as consultation to professionals and families are also important aspects of the program s mandate. Child and Adolescent Services Psychiatrists, psychologists, pediatricians, social workers, an occupational therapist, community mental health nurses and case managers help children, adolescents and their families deal with serious mental illness and behaviour disorders. Services are offered regularly at the Cape Breton Regional Facility as well as in several locations throughout the district on a more part-time basis. A range of general and specialized assessment and treatment services are offered. Sex Offender Program This is a provincial group-based, relapse prevention program provided by a half-time psychologist in collaboration with the Department of Justice. Offenders are screened and assessed through Justice and the Provincial Sex Offender Program in Dartmouth and then assessed by the local psychologist to determine appropriateness. Structured groups are provided for 24 weeks and follow-up is provided through Probation Services.

Inpatient Services Unit 1C This short stay unit provides full inpatient assessment and treatment for individuals in crisis. The average length of stay is about five days. During that time arrangements are made for appropriate follow up in the community. Unit 1B This 24 bed inpatient unit offers a full range of assessment and treatment services for patients with mental illness/emotional disorders. The length of stay on this unit varies from five days to about six weeks. Patients are encouraged to participate in a daily schedule of structured therapeutic groups and activities. Individual and family sessions as well as other treatment components are offered by our multidisciplinary clinical team. Unit 1D This is a 16-bed inpatient unit providing multidisciplinary assessment and treatment with a rehabilitation focus toward community living. In addition to receiving treatment for the symptoms of mental illness, patients are assisted in the development and/or maintenance of daily living, recreational, educational and social skills to permit them to develop a good quality of life in a less restrictive environment.

Rehabilitation Services We provide support and care for individuals living with severe and persistent mental illness. The Community Rehabilitation Program that provides support for clients with severe and persistent mental illness. This support includes assistance in managing mental illness, life skills, housing, employment, and education. Community Rehabilitation operates under the principles of Pychosocial Rehabilitation and the concepts of recovery. It includes a case management program (CRT), depot clinics in each of the Adult Mental Health Clinics, and consultation/support to families, caregivers, and community agencies. There is also liaison with Unit 1D, Homecare Nova Scotia and communitybased agencies and services in the areas of housing, education and employment. Crossroads is a community outreach program that fosters the recovery and wellness of persons living with persistent mental illnesses. The aim of Crossroads is to promote hope, full citizenship, consumer/ family participation, mutual support, personal growth, social networks, improved housing and access to numerous employment and educational opportunities. Family and Client Meetings and Educational Sessions are scheduled on a monthly basis throughout the industrial area to provide the opportunity for clients and families to discuss relevant issues and to become involved in the planning and evaluation of mental health service delivery. Rehabilitation Services is also closely associated with two community-based services for the severe and persistently mentally ill. These programs, which are operated by independent boards, include Cairdeil Place and the Touch on Wood Training Centre. Cairdeil Place is a centre that offers life skills, support, social and recreational activities for adults who live in the community and have chronic mental health problems. Touch on Wood is a non-profit organization whose mandate is to assist individuals with persistent, recurring mental health problems to gain the skills required for them to become productive members of the community at large. The organization runs a woodworking training centre, a retail outlet and a cooperative program that provides training in skills designed to ready the client for employment in the community.

Other Mental Health Programs Seniors Mental Health Program This program involves the provision of consultation and education services to nursing homes throughout the district by a community mental health nurse working in collaboration with local geriatricians, psychiatrists and family physicians.
