DEN 1350 Dental Assisting II Master Course Syllabus Prerequisite: DENA 1340 Semester(s) Offered: Fall Class Hours: Lecture: 4/week Lab Hours: Lab: 6/week Credits Hours: 3 Course Description: Focuses on chairside assisting with dental specialty procedures. Topics include: prosthodontic procedures (fixed and removable); orthodontics; pediatric dentistry; periodontic procedures; oral and maxillofacial surgery procedures; endodontics procedures; management of dental office emergencies; medically compromised patients and expanded functions approved by law for performance by dental assistants in the state of Georgia. Student will pass a comprehensive examination and successfully perform all required clinical skills to receive EFDA certification. Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able: I. Periodontic Procedures Select and prepare tray set-ups and all necessary armamentarium for periodontic specialty procedures. Use the concepts of four-handed dentistry when assisting with periodontic specialty procedures. Assist with, mix, change, and/or remove periodontal surgical dressings. II. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Procedures Select and prepare tray set-ups and all necessary armamentarium for oral and maxillofacial specialty procedures. Use the concepts of four-handed dentistry when assisting with oral and maxillofacial specialty procedures. Assist with and/or monitor the administration of nitrous oxide/oxygen analgesia. Redress and remove dressing from patient with alveolitis.

Use the concepts of four-handed dentistry when assisting with endodontic specialty procedures. Prosthdontic Procedures (Fixed and Removable) Prepare appropriate treatment trays with armamentarium in sequence of use. Apply the concepts of four-handed dentistry when assisting with prosthodontic procedures. Select and prepare materials appropriate for prosthodontic procedures. Place cavity liner, base, or varnish over exposed dentin. Change bleaching agent during in-office bleaching procedures Fabricate custom bleaching trays for take home use. Apply desensitizing agents to root surface. Apply primer and bonding agents to etched enamel or dentin. Fabricate intraoral provisional crowns and bridges. Apply and remove retraction cord. Assist with and/or perform the taking of face bow records. Fabricate alginate impressions to be used to repair a damaged prosthesis and fabricate a night guard. Provide the patient with oral and/or written pre-and post-treatment instructions for prosthodontic procedures. V. Orthodontics Prepare appropriate treatment trays with armamentarium in sequence of use. Use the concepts of four-handed dentistry when assisting with orthodontic procedures. Select and prepare materials appropriate for orthodontic procedures. Provide the patient with oral and/or written pre-and post-treatment instructions for orthodontic procedures. VI. Pediatric Dentistry Prepare appropriate treatment trays with armamentarium in sequence of use. Use the concepts of four-handed dentistry when assisting with pediatric dentistry. Select and prepare materials appropriate for pediatric dentistry. Provide the patient with oral and/or written pre-and post-treatment instructions for pediatric dentistry. Apply topical anticariogenic agents. Apply pit and fissure sealants. VII. Management of Dental Office Emergencies Implement techniques for the prevention of medical emergencies in the dental office.

Recognize the signs and symptoms related to specific medical conditions/emergencies likely to occur in the dental office. Respond to and assist in the management of chairside emergencies including CPR. VIII. Medical Compromised Patients Describe management techniques and precautions VIV. Grading Scale: The grading scale is detailed in the Catalog and student Handbook and listed below for reference. All faculty members follow this scale when assigning grades to reflect a given student s performance in the classroom. Grade Numerical Equivalent Grade Point A/A* 90 100 4 B/B* 80 89 3 C/C* 70 79 2 D/D* 60 69 1 F/F* 0-59 0 Effective Summer Quarter 2006, Athens Technical College replaced the S/U grading system used for learning support classes with an A*- F* grading system. The registrar uses an asterisk (*, B*, C*, D*, W*, WF*, WP*) to designate learning support course grades on transcripts and grade report because the grades are not components of the quarterly grade point average.

Required Textbook: Modern Dental Assisting; Torres and Ehrlich. 10 th Edition. Bird and Robinson. ISBN: 978-1-4377-1729-7 Supplementary Materials(s): N/A Required Equipment/Tools/Resources: Lab coat, clipboard, red/blue pencil, safety glasses. Instructional Technologies Employed: Will include demonstration/performance, lecture, audio-visuals, performance, and written examinations. Grading Policy and Criteria: Lab Performance: 30% Written Examinations: 45% Final Examination: 25% Laboratory Performance: Performance tests will be given during this course. Each student must satisfactorily complete these tasks to at least 70% accuracy. Practice and have a peer evaluate you before you take your performance exam. Be prepared. If you are required to retake a performance exam, it will result in a 10 point reduction in grade each time you repeat. The performance exams will be scheduled during lab times. Students must keep track of the required performance test. Any performance test that has not been completed by the end of the quarter will result in a grade of zero for that test. If a student misses a scheduled performance test, the test may be made up at the instructor s discretion and at a time convenient to the instructor. A grade of a C (70 or higher) must be earned in DENA 1350 to proceed in the Dental Assisting Program. Any Exams missed due to an absence must be made up within one week or a grade of 0 will be posted. It is the responsibility of the student to schedule make up. Group Session: A one hour group session will be conducted weekly to share personal clinical experiences with peers. Attendance is required. Failure to attend will result in a drop of letter grade. Academic Support Center: The Academic Support Centers of Athens Technical College (ATC) provide free tutoring for enrolled students. Both instructors and peer tutors provide tutoring in almost all

The college considers both tardiness and early departure from class as forms of absenteeism. Students absent from class for any reason are still responsible for all work missed. Instructors have the right to determine whether work missed can be made up and have the liberty to set reasonable expectations for attendance based on frequency of class meetings and on the instructional delivery method, subject, type, and level of the class. Class attendance policies will be clearly stated for students by their respective instructors on separate documents (course outlines/schedules) or appendices to the master syllabus. Course Withdrawal Students may withdraw from a course without academic penalty until the midpoint of the term. Students withdrawing after the midpoint of the term receive grades of WP Withdrawal Passing, or WF Withdrawal Failing. Students who stop attending class(es) without formally withdrawing risk earning a final grade of F, which will appear on the academic transcript. Withdrawing from a course may impact financial aid status, academic standing, and GPA. The warranty guarantees that graduates demonstrate the knowledge and skills and can perform each competency as identified in the industry-validated standards established for every program of study. If one of our graduates educated under a standard program or his/her employer finds that the graduate is deficient in one or more competencies as defined in the course/program standards, Athens Technical College will retrain the employee at no instructional cost to the employee or the employer. This guarantee is in effect for two years after graduation.

Select and prepare tray set-ups and all necessary armamentarium for specialty procedures. 4. Describe the role of the dental assistant in the gingivectomy procedure. 5. Identify 10 factors that affect periodontal health. 6. Identify the instruments used in periodontics, and explain the indications for their use. 7. Explain the indications for placement of periodontal surgical dressings. 8. Demonstrate the technique for proper placement of periodontal surgical dressings. 9. Describe how radiographs are used in periodontics. 10. Describe the five case types of periodontal disease. 11. Explain the significance of plaque and calculus in relation to periodontal disease. II. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Procedures 1. Describe the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery. 2. Perform surgical scrub. 3. Identify the specialized instruments used for basic surgical procedures.

4. Describe the surgical procedures commonly performed in a general practice. 5. Using the concepts of four-handed dentistry when assisting during oral surgery procedures. 6. Describe the type of postoperative care given to a patient after a surgical procedure. 7. Assist in the placement and removal of sutures. 8. Provide post-operative instructions to patients after a surgical procedure. 9. Select and prepare tray set-ups and all necessary armamentarium for oral and maxillofacial specialty procedures. III. IV. Endodontic Procedures 1. Select and prepare tray set-ups and all necessary armamentarium for endodontic specialty procedures. 2. Use the concepts of four-handed dentistry when assisting with endodontic specialty procedures. 3. Describe the diagnostic tools used in endodontic tools. 4. List the four types of treatment for teeth. 5. List the types of instruments used in endodontic procedures and their uses. 6. Describe the procedure of root canal treatment. 7. Identify difference between pulpotomy and pulpectomy. 8. Provide post-operative instructions to a patient following an endodontic procedure. 9. Application of rubber dam 10. Identification of rubber dam equipment. Prosthodontic Procedures: 1. Identify the various fixed prosthodontic tooth preparations 2. Identify the various types of crowns and bridges 3. Prepare appropriate treatment trays, with armamentarium in sequence of use 4. List the indications and contraindications for fixed prosthodontics 5. List the components of a bride, state the functions of each and describe the laboratory steps involved in the construction of a fixed bridge 6. List three methods used for gingival retraction 7. Describe the methods of obtaining a bite registration 8. Demonstrate preparing polysulfide, polyether, polysiloxane reversible hydrocolloid impression materials and waxes 9. Assist with, place and/or remove temporary cement 10. Assist with and/or remove excess cement from the coronal surfaces of the teeth, restorations and appliances 11. Take and pour alginate impressions on live works patients 12. Prepare, mix deliver, and store restorative materials including: cements and temporary restorative materials 13. Instruct the patient on how to care for non-removable appliances and prostheses

Describe the indications for the use of pit and fissure sealants and for preventive restorations 5. Describe the construction and use of mouth guards and space maintainers 6. Demonstrate the application of topical fluoride using a commercial fluoride gel and trays 7. Assist with the application of topical fluoride 8. Demonstrate the application of pit and fissure sealants to laboratory proficiency 9. Describe the steps involved in preparing and cementing a stainless steel crown to laboratory proficiency 10. Select and prepare materials appropriate for pediatric dentistry. 11. Provide the patient with oral and/or written pre and post treatment instructions for pediatric dentistry. VI. Orthodontics 1. Describe the categories of, and need for, orthodontic treatment. 2. Identify Angle s classification of normal occlusion and malocclusion.

3. Describe the facial habits that may adversely affect orthodontic treatment and explain the importance of patient cooperation in successful treatment. 4. Identify various orthodontic appliances. 5. Identify the specialized instruments used in orthodontic treatment. 6. Describe the steps in the selection, cementation and removal of orthodontic bands. 7. Simulate giving a patient instructions on home care and wearing headgear or a positioner. 8. Describe the steps in direct bonding of orthodontic brackets. 9. Describe the construction of a Hawley retainer. 10. List the steps in pouring impressions, separating, trimming and finishing orthodontic study casts. 11. Demonstrate the placement and removal of orthodontic separators to laboratory proficiency. 12. Use the concepts of four-handed dentistry when assisting with orthodontic procedures. 13. Provide the patient with oral and/or written pre- and post-treatment instructions for orthodontic procedures. VII. Management of Dental Office Emergencies 1. Implement techniques for the prevention of medical emergencies in the dental office. 2. Recognize the signs and symptoms related to specific medical conditions/emergencies likely to occur in the dental office. 3. Respond to and assist in the management of chairside emergencies including CPR. 4. Describe how to prevent a possible medical emergency. 5. Correctly identify location of emergency first aid kit and knowledge of its contents. 6. Recognize syncope and be able to assist with this condition. 7. Respond to hyperventilation by a patient. 8. Recognize the symptoms and respond to a patient with a localized allergic reaction. 9. Recognize and respond to a patient, with anaphylaxis, having an angina attack, with a potential acute myocardial infarction, with hyper- and hypoglycemia, and with an epileptic seizure. VIII. Special Patients 1. Describe management technique and precautions when treating patients with special needs. 2. Describe the stages of the older population. 3. Describe the importance of the medical history for the medically compromised patient. 4. List the major medical disorders that may affect the way a patient is treated in the dental office.
