APASS MBAD DARAS Anti Piracy Assistance Security Service Maritime Boarding Alert Device Direct Action Response Assessment Service
The Trident Group was formed by seasoned veterans of the United States Navy Special Warfare (SEAL s) Community and Senior Officers of the U.S. Navy Surface Warfare Fleet in the year 2000. Since its inception, the Trident Group has been actively involved and at the forefront of maritime security, particularly on Anti Piracy initiatives. These initiatives included presentations and/or briefs to the following organizations: the International Maritime Organizations (IMO) Anti Piracy conference in Kuala Lumpur; the Maritime Security Council; the United States Coast Guard; the US Department of Transportation-MARAD and board members of global shipping concerns. The Trident Group has developed several proprietary security solutions in support of these Anti Piracy initiatives. Governments alone cannot solve the problem. Industry must be a part of the solution. U.S. Navy Fifth Fleet commander Vice Admiral Bill Gortney has urged the international shipping industry to assume greater responsibility for the protection of vessels from pirate attacks. Gortney said the Fifth Fleet does not have the resources to provide 24-hour protection for vessels that sail in the Gulf of Aden. These solutions include: APASS Anti Piracy Assistance Security Service MBAD Maritime Boarding Alert Device DARAS Direct Action Response Assessment Service APASS APASS is a threat based, risk mitigation solution that is scalable. APASS was designed to adapt and evolve with the current threat matrix. Furthermore, APASS is exclusively supported and implemented by subject matter experts (SME s) on maritime security. The APASS service matrix ranges from vulnerability assessments to providing Fly To armed security teams. There are five APASS levels of service. APASS LEVEL I Assessment of vessel to identify PHYSICAL vulnerabilities to piracy. Follow-on report to crew/liner Company as to the observed vulnerabilities and suggestions for mitigating those observed vulnerabilities. APASS LEVEL II Level I AND review of vessel security plan (VSP) in support of providing amendments to the VSP specifically targeting Anti/ Counter Piracy SOP development. Authoring of accepted and approved amendments to the VSP. APASS LEVEL III Level I/Level II AND specific crew training in Anti/Counter Piracy standard operating procedures (SOP s). APASS LEVEL IV Level I/Level II/ Level II AND armed, onboard, escort through vital sections of the voyage. APASS LEVEL V Fly To Armed escort service. TG has provided armed escort services in the Mediterranean, Suez Canal, Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean. *Note: The Trident Group s armed security teams are comprised of former U.S. NAVY SEAL s. It is imperative that seasoned, skilled security personnel are deployed with a clearly defined use of force matrix.
MBAD MBAD is the acronym for Trident Group s, US Patented, Anti/Counter Piracy technology. MBAD was developed in response to industry requests for better protection and increased technological support for ships and crews. The following is a short list of Anti Piracy devices which are currently being utilized, without great success: Projecting sound through a Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD) Video camera coverage of gunwales and weather decks Electrified fencing Water Hoses and other shipboard devices There are two (2) basic problems with these types of piracy defense: 1. Positive identification that close maneuvering/ trailing vessels intend to board your vessel 2. Unless your crew picks up on the approach AND keeps eyes on the suspect vessel without exception your crew will not know they are being pirated until the pirates are onboard the vessel. Operators from Trident Group, including the Chief Executive Officer, have spent years boarding ships in the middle of the ocean and we KNOW what the specifics are that allow for a successful boarding, and more importantly how to STOP that boarding. From these years of experience, Trident Group has developed a system that protects the vessel from the waterline to the gunwale. When MBAD initiates, there is no doubt that unauthorized boarders are Once MBAD alerts the bridge that there are climbers at the waterline, immediate implementation of vessel Anti-piracy SOP s can be undertaken by the crew. This immediate response will be crucial to repelling unauthorized boarders. Simultaneously, the repelling components of MBAD will drive away the climbers AND other supporting vessels. MBAD is designed with the following key points in mind: Repel Un-Authorized Boarders In Port, at Anchor, Underway Alert Crew of Attempted Boarding Strengthen Ships Security and Ships Security Plan Enhance Current Crew Security Capability Without Crew Increase attempting to access your vessel. MBAD supplies something that other Force Protection (FP) products do not An early warning system that has both repelling components (Counter Piracy) and alerting components (Anti Piracy) which works BEFORE intruders are on board a vessel. Most other systems are designed to activate once the intruder is over the rail of the vessel, which, means the crew is already playing catch up to Force Protection and is in real trouble. Once an intruder is on board, you are faced with a completely different scenario of which compliance by the crew is the only real response if your hope is for crew survival. The majority of successfully averted acts of piracy result from the vessel being aware that they are being targeted. Currently, this awareness requires greater attention to radars, increased deck watches, and possibly embarked security teams. The need for increased focus on possible boarders is a burden to crews and vessel operations. MBAD does not require an additional manpower load at all. Once the system is installed, it will immediately alert the Bridge, and other Key Crew Members, that climbers are about to board your vessel. Simultaneously, as MBAD alerts the ship, it sends out a repelling medium that will drive all but the most determined and prepared climbers away from your vessel. Alert Crew of a Man-Overboard Situation Unmanned, 24/7 Security & Safety Monitoring Scalable to Any Vessel Size Private Sector Merchant and Military Applications Specific On-scene and focused Protection Global Alert Notification through GMDSS 360 Waterline and Gunwale Protection Finally, once the subtle configuration of MBAD begins to be recognized by pirates, this will, in itself, become a deterrent to piracy. The system is simple, durable, effective, and is free from complicated software and expensive components. MBAD works while underway, at anchor, or pierside and is fitted specifically PER SHIP. Because of this property, MBAD is the perfect Force Protection system for vessels of almost any size or shape. MBAD is easily adapted to Gas and Oil Platforms as well as to Passenger vessels for SOLAS (Man-Overboard) use. Trident Group Inc. 2009
DARAS DARAS is a Pro-Active security plan designed to provide facility/vessel recovery specialists and Maritime Emergency Responders (Government Agencies) with the most complete, preoperation, planning information available. DARAS provides the missing solution to incidents that have progressed past Front Door Security preparation. It is rare that organizations have planned for action in the event of a worse case scenario. DA- RAS provides emergency responders from the private sector, law enforcement, and military units with a well thought out plan to mitigate terrible situations by providing vital information, video footage and digital pictures, and a means for training on these situations without interrupting operational tempo and, subsequently, revenue production. MARITIME EXPERIENCE Anti Piracy Assistance Security Services (APASS) Trident Group leads the maritime industry with our innovative APASS system. APASS is comprised of three major components: 1. Training/Assessment/Education: This section provides clients with experience based training for ship s crew and company management. We also provide a unique look at what (exactly) makes your vessel According to Peter Swift, the Managing Director of INTERTANKO, in a letter to the Secretary-General of the IMO, The pirates are usually heavily armed, and the attacks well planned and coordinated and frequently violent...one recent attack off Nigeria s Brass River was particularly violent and persistent, with repeated attacks from heavily armed pirates in a fast skiff firing not only automatic machine guns but also a heavy gun firing 10mm bullets which pierced the 6mm steel walls of the accommodation 50 times as well as putting 6 holes in one lifeboat. DARAS provides: Insurance companies with assurance that operations for recovering facilities/vessels have a greater chance of succeeding with minimal collateral damage Government, law enforcement, and private sector emergency responders with invaluable information to be able to board a rogue or suspect vessel or enter a facility, control the facility/vessel functions, and avert a land-based/maritime terror incident Buildings, facility compounds, vessels, off-shore oil platforms (Go-Plats), and maritime assets coverage DARAS should be used for all new facilities/vessels and land-based/maritime assets and is extremely valuable for assets currently in service. DARAS collects information, documents information, and produces information packages that provide Direct Action Teams with climbing information, air insertion information, vital control center location information, and data to aid recovery teams to mitigate recovery challenges. vulnerable to piracy. Finally, we provide assistance in developing training drills, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP s), and scenario applications. 2. Onboard Security Services: Trident Group has been providing onboard (armed) security services to both public and private sector maritime entities. TG Operators have a unique perspective that allows our APASS Teams to blend with ship s crew without negative impact to ships operations or crew living standards. 3. Technology Application: TG offers the only system that provides early warning and repel protection against piracy that starts from the waterline. Trident Group s Maritime Boarding Alert Device (MBAD) is an extremely durable and simple system which is free from troublesome software or sensitive camera systems and does NOT require human monitoring. DARAS packages can be provided to the Insurance Company, as well as recognized emergency response units. The following is a general outline of DARAS: Pre Survey Survey/Assessment Post Survey/Production Post DARAS Briefing/Consultation Trident Group Inc. 2009
