PORTLEDGE SCHOOL 2014-15 HAIKU LMS PARENT MANUAL FOR PORTLEDGE S LOWER, MIDDLE AND UPPER SCHOOLS About Haiku All Portledge students now have access to our new Learning Management System (LMS), Haiku. This digital learning platform replaces our website s teacher pages and offers many new tools to help your child be successful at Portledge. As parents, you also have unique credentials to access Haiku s parent portal from Portledge.HaikuLearning.com. This document will provide the steps for accessing, personalizing and navigating the LMS. TOPICS COVERED: Logging In Walkthrough Popup MyPortal (HOME) Layout Single or Multiple Student Views Sample Page Navigation Logging out Logging In STEP 1: Open any web browser (we suggest using Chrome, but Firefox and Safari will work fine). STEP 2: Navigate to the following web address: Portledge.HaikuLearning.com STEP 3: Using the credentials supplied to you, enter your username and password in the correct text fields (see image above). Remember: Passwords are case sensitive. STEP 4: Click SIGN IN....learn more on the following pages. WALKTHROUGH POPUP - This section of the manual will discuss how to use the Walkthrough popup to help you explore the different portions of the Haiku LMS MYPORTAL LAYOUT - This section will discuss the different content blocks displayed on the Home/ MyPortal Page. SINGLE OR MULTIPLE STUDENT VIEW - If you have more than one child attending Portledge, this section will discuss how to view an individual child s class roster.
Walkthrough for This Page The Haiku LMS provides the Walkthrough for This Page tool for new LMS user. This popup will help you explore the different features on each portion of the LMS. HOW DO I USE THIS TOOL? Upon your first log in, the Walkthrough popup should greet you. You can either click Next and walkthrough the page, or the small X to close the popup window. WALKTHROUGH POPUP If you choose to walkthrough the page, you will be taken on a short tour of the features on the page you are viewing. After the tour concludes, the window will close and you will be able to interact with the features you just learned about. Need More Help? In addition to the Walkthrough for This Page tool, Haiku also offers a Knowledge Base website. This is a collection of articles, FAQs and videos that can answer many of your functionality questions. You can access this through the Help drop down menu (see image below). Also, feel free to contact your child s advisor with questions or to give us some feedback about our LMS. HELP MENU - After your initial Walkthough, you can always access the Walkthrough for This Page tool by going to the help menu. You can also Search the Knowledge Base for help.
MYPORTAL /HOME Home Screen The MyPortal/ Home screen will provide you with information about your child s classes. CONTENT BLOCKS The Home page is broken up into different content block areas: My Classes - The far left column displays all of the classes a student is enrolled in. Clicking on the class name will take you to that class s content page. Calendar - The calendar displays links to assignments by due date. Below the calendar, you will see upcoming assignments and events. Recent Activity - The recent activity lists all page updates. Announcements - These are temporary posts from the teachers about the class. Grade Summary - Currently Inactive Color Coding Each Class is color coded, making it easily locate corresponding upcoming assignments and announcements. Inactive Features The Grade Summary and Recent Grade blocks are currently set to inactive for Parents. Grades will continue to be shared with parents through interim, trimester and final report cards. Recent Grades -Currently Inactive NOTIFICATIONS - The Notifications settings allow you to receive email and text notifications when assignments get posted or changes are made to a class page.
Class Lists If you have multiple children who attend Portledge, you can choose to view only one child s content at a time. SELECTING VIEW OPTIONS Here are the steps for choosing to view a single child s class list. SINGLE OR MULTIPLE STUDENT VIEW Step 1 - Next to the My Classes header you will see a caret symbol. Click it to display the drop down menu (see image to the right). Step 2 - In the drop down you will see Me and your child s or children s name(s). Select the child you would like to view from the list. Step 3 - Now the Class List will only display that child s courses. The other content blocks will also reflect the change. Step 4 - You can now explore individual class content by clicking on the class s title. This will bring you to the class page with more information about daily lessons. Show Classes for: Menu In the Show classes for: menu, Me is the default Home screen setting. When you have selected Me you will see all of the classes that your student(s) is enrolled in. This means that if you have multiple children attending Portledge School, you could see multiple subject specific classes from different grade levels (for example: English 10 - Advanced and English 12 - The Epic). SINGLE VIEW - After you select to view one child, his or her name will be displayed at the top of the Class List.
NAVIGATING CLASS PAGES Class Layout Each class page has information about your child s courses. The image to the right is a sample class page. CLASS CONTENT Each class has similar items, but might have a slightly different layout: Pages - This is where the bulk of information for the course will be stored. Calendar - The calendar displays links to assignments by due date. This is just a larger, class specific version of the calendar on the home page. Connect - Students can access their LMS Dropbox, respond to Polls, participate in discussions, etc. here. Parents will have limited access to options under this tab. Assess - Assess is where students can access their assignments, digital assessments and grades. Parents will have limited access to options under this tab. Return Home To return to the MyPortal / Home page, you can click the Home button located at the top left of the window (see image above). Quick Navigation By clicking the My Classes drop down menu on the top right (see image above), you will be provided with a list of classes to view. You can then select the class you would like to view. LOGOUT - When you are ready, you can click the little Bonsai icon located at the top, right side of the screen, and select logout.
