1. PROGRAM OBJECTIVES AND CURRICULUM DATA SUPPLIED BY PROGRAM Degree Name: Identify each of the graduate degrees delivered by the academic unit. Begin with your masters level degree(s) and move on to the doctoral level degree, if applicable. Date Established: The year in which the graduate degree was first offered. If the date is unknown, offer your best estimate. Objectives: State the educational objectives of the graduate degree. These should be high-level objectives rather than course goals. State the intended learning outcomes and experiences, which may include discipline specific and/or professional skills. Describe how the objectives are achieved - e.g., through course work, teaching and research seminars, laboratory and technical training, internship and practica, major research papers and thesis. For example: students will develop critical thinking and analytical skills through the conception, planning and completion of an independent research project in the field under the guidance of their academic supervisor. Areas of Specialization: Identify any area of distinctive strength, which might be associated with a concentration of faculty working in a particular field. Optional for masters degrees; doctoral degrees should identify one or more fields of specialization. Special/Innovative Features: Briefly describe how innovation and/or creativity influence graduate degree design, program degree delivery, or inclusion of experiential learning unique opportunities. State whether the graduate degree has areas of strength, or is unique nationally or internationally, in a manner that the program wishes to advertise within its discipline. If applicable, describe access to specialized equipment. Admissions Standards: List the admission requirements pertaining to academic standing, English language proficiency, second language requirements, mandatory course requirements and other requirements, if any. Please note any graduate degree admission requirements that exceed the minimums set by CGSR, and/or incorporate different evaluation mechanisms outside of the CGSR standards. This includes, for example, higher English proficiency test scores for international students, or the need to participate in a face-to-face interview, or the requirement for qualifying examinations. Courses Offered: For each of the courses listed in the first column (Masters and PhD), indicate whether it has been offered in any given year of the review period (yes/no). Please upload any available course syllabi to the Supporting Documents folder in SharePoint. Course Evaluation: Describe evaluation mechanism(s) in place to regularly assess your graduate program courses. Program commentary on student satisfaction with course work: Review student responses from CGSR Exit and Current Student surveys. PROGRAM ENROLMENT AND STUDENT FUNDING DATA SUPPLIED BY INSTITUTIONAL PLANNING & ASSESSMENT OR COLLEGE OF GRADUATE STUDIES & RESEARCH 2.1 Student Enrolment: Data is reported separately by graduate degree. When counting students over an academic year, each individual student is counted once. A student, therefore, is represented as being in the most recent program/department on record within that academic year. A person is considered a student if they have at least one active registration record within the academic year based on data in SiRIUS as of the end of each session (Spring/Summer or Fall/Winter). Metric Data Points: Student Headcount Data Point: Student Headcount Data Source: SiRIUS, the student information system. Data Time Frame: Academic Reporting Year, May 1st to April 30th. Data Definition: When counting students over an academic year, each individual student is counted once. A student, therefore, is represented as being in the most recent program/department on record within that academic year. A person is considered a student if they have at least one active registration record within the academic year based on data in SiRIUS as of the end of each session (Spring/Summer or Fall/Winter). 2.2 New Admissions and Student Origin: There will be multiple tables for each graduate degree within the program. Metric Data Points: Origin, Student Type, GPA Origin Data Source: SiRIUS Data Time Frame: Current Data Definition: Origin based on high-school records, where they exist, and domestic/international student status. There is currently no other institutional definition or data that supports student origin. If an origin is unknown it means that the student either was international and now attained citizenship, or was admitted to CGSR as a domestic student and no high-school information was provided to SESD. Student Type Data Source: SiRIUS Data Time Frame: Terms in the Academic Year. The Academic year consists of 4 terms across two sessions. Spring and Summer session; Fall and Winter session. If a student is considered New in any of the four terms in an academic year, they will be included. Data Definition: See Data Time Frame (above) GPA Data Time Frame: As supplied at time of admission. 2.3 & 2.4 Awards/Scholarships: Counts the number of students receiving Tri-Agency Scholarships, Deans Scholarships, and Other funding. Tri-Agency column includes fully-funded scholarships (i.e. CGS Scholarships). Other column includes funding not captured in the first two columns, from the following sources: Scholarships/Fellowships/Bursaries, Research Assistantships, and Teaching Assistantships. Note that a student receiving funding from multiple sources will be counted in multiple columns. Metric Data Points: Tri-council awards, dean s scholarship awards, other funding Origin: Data Source: HR Payroll Data Data time frame: All years under review, reporting period May1 April 30 Data definition: The total amounts received within the academic years under review. 2.5 Devolved Allocations to Departments: The annual allocation from CGSR, based on a formula, to be used for graduate student awards at the departmental level. DATA SUPPLIED BY PROGRAM Commentary on Number of New Students: Provide any pertinent comments regarding the past and present numbers of students, and/or changes over the period. Commentary on Student Recruitment Plan: Comment on whether the program has met its recruitment targets during the years under review. Provide comments on the intentions to maintain, increase or reduce recruitment targets, and provide a rationale for the planned change. Commentary on Student Awards/Scholarships: Review student responses from CGSR Exit and Current Student surveys. Provide your commentary about student funding and student satisfaction with funding. STUDENT OUTCOMES DATA SUPPLIED BY INSTITUTIONAL PLANNING & ASSESSMENT OR COLLEGE OF GRADUATE STUDIES & RESEARCH 3.1 Number of Students Completed: Student completion data provided separately for each degree type. Metric Data Points: Convocation List Data Point: Convocation Data Source: SiRIUS, the student information system Data Time Frame: Spring and Fall Convocation ceremonies. Data Definition: If a student received a qualification they are included in this data. 3.2 Average Number of Months to Completion: Student completion data provided separately for each degree type. Metric Data Points: Program Start Date, Convocation Date Metric Calculation: Number of months between convocation and the start of the program indicated in the Program of Studies record, averaged for students in each program in each department. Program Start Date Data Source: SIRIUS, the Student Information System Data Time Frame: Point-in-time (as listed on the student record) Data Definition: The term in which the student first registered for courses as it relates to their studies. For each of the four terms, the following dates were used, May 1st, July 1st, Sept 1st, January 1st for Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter terms respectively. Convocation Date Data Source: SiRIUS, the student information system Data Time Frame: Spring or Fall Ceremony Data Definition: The date of May 1st used for the Spring ceremony, the date of Oct 1st used for Fall Ceremony. Specific ceremony dates were not used as they aren t stored consistently for each student. 3.3 Student incompletes/withdrawals: Data for student withdrawals and for exceeding specified time requirements are provided separately for each graduate degree type. Metric Data Points: Student Status, Start Term Student Status Data Source: SiRIUS Data Time Frame: Academic Reporting Year, May 1st to April 30th. Data Definition: SiRIUS tracks the registration status of a student. If a student has a Withdrawn status, they are included here. Graduate Program Review Data Definitions, 5

Start Term Data Source: SiRIUS Data Time Frame: Term Based Data Definition: The Term associated with the start of studies for this student. This is used to calculate if a student has been here over 5 or over 6 years, based on if they are still an active student in the same program 5 or 6 years ago from the end of the Academic Reporting Year in question. 3.6 Continuing Masters Students: The number of students who completed their masters degree in the program is provided. 3.7 Post-Graduate Employment: Graduate program alumni will be surveyed to identify their current employment status and their views on how well the graduate program and degree prepared them for a career in the chosen discipline. The table reports the number of surveys sent, number of respondents and responses to the key questions in the post-graduate employment survey. Further details will be provided in the Alumni Survey report. DATA SUPPLIED BY PROGRAM Commentary on Program Completion: Review student responses from CGSR Exit and Current Student surveys. Provide observations, comments and discuss any trends or challenges with respect to student completions and time-to-completion, and comment on the student feedback on factors affecting completion and time to completion. Commentary on Incompletes/Withdrawals: Provide your interpretation of the data, and provide unit or discipline specific observations (optional) on student incompletes and withdrawals. Discuss any trends or challenges with respect to student withdrawals or incompletes. 3.4 Graduate Student Knowledge Translation: The data for all graduate students, regardless of their graduate degree stream, should be reported together. Multi-authored items are to be counted for each graduate student registered. This means you may count one item more than once. For example if two students in your program jointly published a journal article in 2012/13, this would be counted as 2 in Journal articles accepted, refereed for that year under review. Commentary on Knowledge Translation: Review student responses from CGSR Exit and Current Student surveys. Provide your commentary about student knowledge translation, and about student feedback on factors affecting preparation for research and inquiry. Provide any other pertinent information regarding the opportunity provided to graduate students for knowledge transfer, and the degree to which they participate. Examples include: participation in various knowledge translation activities such as colloquia, seminars and conferences; presentation of their work through posters, papers and artistic activities or events. Also comment on the discipline appropriate venues for knowledge translation, and the level of success experienced by the students in this activity. 3.5 Students Receiving Other External Awards: Awards should be identified in the first column of the table. Please provide the number of students, masters or PhD, who in any given year in the period under review, while they were students in the program, received such external awards. Count each student once per award in the reporting period. If awards were received by students after they graduated, please do not include these in the table, but use the commentary text below to identify this accomplishment. 3.6 Continuing Masters Students: Enter the number of masters students who continued into doctoral studies, either at the UofS or elsewhere. Commentary on Student Satisfaction: Review student responses from CGSR Exit and Current Student surveys. 4. LEARNING ENVIRONMENT DATA SUPPLIED BY INSTITUTIONAL PLANNING & ASSESSMENT OR COLLEGE OF GRADUATE STUDIES & RESEARCH 4.1 Graduate Student to Graduate Faculty Ratio: Calculates the ratio of graduate students to graduate faculty for all Masters degrees combined, but separate from the Ph.D. program. DATA SUPPLIED BY PROGRAM Communication: Describe the various techniques and tools your program uses to inform prospective and existing students about the program, its policies or procedures, and expectations for faculty and students. The techniques of communication might include faculty meetings, graduate student handbooks or standardized student/supervisor agreements. Provide copies of, or references to, such documentation as a separate documents. Intellectual Development and Educational Experience of the Student: Comment on the structured opportunities of meaningful intellectual interaction among students, and with faculty e.g., seminars where faculty and student research is presented and discussed; invited speakers; workshops on research ethics, safety regulations, grant and award applications; measures to introduce students to the broader community of scholars in the discipline, etc. 4.2 Graduate Student Supervision: Within the review period, how many Masters and Ph.D. students in the program under review did the faculty member supervise to the point of the students program completion? This data will be cumulative over 5 years. Faculty who are or were involved in more than one graduate program can report additional supervision activity in the Other Programs column. Commentary on Supervision and Learning Resources: Review student responses from CGSR Exit and Current Student surveys. Library Resources: Please describe any special collections or other resources not included in the summary report from the UofS Library. The library summary report from the University Library will be provided in the Supporting Documents folder in SharePoint. Please describe any other resources or special collections not listed on the library summary report. Laboratory and Research Facilities: List major equipment, laboratory facilities, and common research facilities currently available for use, and any immediate or mid-range plans (next 5 years) for additional facility development. Graduate Student Space: Provide an overview of the type and contiguity of facilities available. Consider their locations with respect to the academic unit and the supervising faculty, and note any future plans for relocation or expansion. Square meter allocations are not required. FACULTY PROFILE DATA SUPPLIED BY INSTITUTIONAL PLANNING & ASSESSMENT OR COLLEGE OF GRADUATE STUDIES & RESEARCH 5.1 All Department Faculty List: The table provides a listing of all faculty in the home department of the program, under the following attributes: For most recent year under review Names of all tenured, tenure-track or without term faculty Rank: in order of: professors, associate professors, assistant professors Status: for example, less than 1 FTE appointments; joint appointments with other units (Excludes faculty on paid or unpaid leaves) CGSR: identification of faculty s membership in the College of Graduate Studies and Research Metric Data Points: Member of CGSR, Various HR Data Member of CGSR Data Source: CGSR Membership Database Data Time Frame: Current as of Oct 1st of review year Data Definition: If a faculty member is present in this database, they are considered a member of CGSR. HR Data Data Source: About-US, The Human Resources system Data Time Frame: Fiscal Year, May 1st to April 30th. Data Definition: Faculty included from About-US for the purposes of GPR are Academic with or without Rank, a Dean, or a Department Head. Faculty members are listed based on the budgetary source (who pays them). The Tenure attribute is also provided as-is from About-US. 5.2 Percentage of Full Professors: This table provides a count of: All tenured, tenure-track or without term faculty, who were employed in the period under review, whether or not still in the unit, All full professors, who were employed in each year under review, whether or not still in the unit HR Data Data Source: About-US, The Human Resources system Data Time Frame: Fiscal Year, May 1st to April 30th. The Tenure attribute is also provided as-is from About-US. 5.5 Graduate Program Faculty Grant Funding from Internal and External Sources: This table reports the amount of funding available to support graduate program faculty research and scholarly work, and potentially available to support students research and scholarly work, either through provision of stipends, materials or to conduct research. DATA SUPPLIED BY PROGRAM 5.1 All Department Faculty List: Please upload faculty CVs to the Supporting Documents folder in SharePoint Commentary on All Department Faculty List: Provide any pertinent comments regarding the list Commentary on Percentage of Full Professors: Provide any pertinent comments 5.3 Adjuncts and Associate Members: List any faculty or adjuncts from another academic unit or research agency, report on contributions made to graduate teaching and/or graduate supervision, and include the number of students supervised. 5.4 Graduate Program Faculty Teaching Assignments: For each faculty member listed in the All Department Faculty table, please identify the classes taught in each of the years during the period under review. Report course # for each faculty listed in the appropriate year column. Where a faculty member is on leave for a complete year, note O/L. In the final row, please report the total number of classes taught by the combined adjunct faculty complement listed in the table above. Commentary on Graduate Teaching: Provide any pertinent comments Commentary on Internal and External Funding: Provide an interpretation of the statistical information shown in the above table, and make any other pertinent observations. 5.6 Graduate Program Faculty Receiving Awards: Report any honour with or without a significant monetary value, that was awarded during the review period to any particular graduate program faculty member on the basis of a national or international competition. The awarding agency may be a national or international organization, through a review or juried process based on academic achievement. 5.7 Graduate Faculty Knowledge Translation: Aggregate information is required for the three tables that measure the total graduate program faculty output in terms of knowledge translation as evidenced by awards, research grants and scholarly or artistic outcomes, such as books, articles, conference presentations, or exhibitions. Of relevance are the number of items as listed under activity/description, and not a count of the number of faculty contributors. For example, if two faculty members published one book in 2013-14 you would count 1 in Books accepted, peer reviewed for 2013-14. Each knowledge translation item, activity, or event should only be counted once. In other words, a book is counted as either accepted, or published, for the period under review. Overall Commentary on Faculty Profile: Highlight any conclusions derived from the statistical information that speak to the questions of overall quality and the level of productivity of scholarly work, and to the breadth and level of engagement in scholarly and artistic activities. ADMINISTRATION DATA SUPPLIED BY INSTITUTIONAL PLANNING & ASSESSMENT OR COLLEGE OF GRADUATE STUDIES & RESEARCH CGSR Administrative Review Data: CGSR personnel provide commentary on the effectiveness of the program s systems and procedures in terms of their impact on student experience and success in the areas of admissions, program management, and awards and scholarships. DATA SUPPLIED BY PROGRAM Administrative Resources Graduate Chair and Graduate Secretary: Please describe the graduate studies responsibilities and associated time allocation of the graduate chair and graduate secretary. Previous Review Synopsis: If applicable, list three major observations made by the review panel during the last review of your graduate program. Indicate how the unit had responded to the program review outcomes. If this is the first review of your graduate program, indicate not applicable in the Finding 1 field.
