FOREWORD: CATHARIEN SAAYMAN PRINCIPAL: ABRAHAM KRIEL To all of us here at the Abraham Kriel Child and Youth Care Centre, it is a calling and a blessing to be involved in the lives of the children in our care. Throughout our involvement, we have gained much more than we could have ever given. We have seen children from unimaginable circumstances regain their dignity, through the dedication of people who understand the importance of investing in children. This is your opportunity to become involved and to make a meaningful difference. One way for you to become involved in our organization in a very tangible method is by means of the Sponsor a Child Project. This project aims to bridge the gap between the monthly state subsidy received, and the actual expenses of providing for each individual child. Currently, the centre receives R2500.00 ($225.00) government subsidy per child per month, whilst the actual expenditure to care for an individual child amounts to R5800.00 ($520.00). This creates a total monthly deficit of R3100 ($277.00) per child. Multiply this number by a total of 220 children, and the deficit per month amounts to R682 000.00 ($61 149.00) or R8 184 000.00 ($733 784.00) per year. The Sponsor a Child Project allows donors to make a monthly financial contribution of $50.00 towards the care of a specific child. The sponsor then receives a photo and regular news updates regarding the child. On the child s birthday, a gift in the form of personal toiletries, clothes or stationary may also be sent to the center. The sponsor will receive letters from the child personally. If you have made the decision to become involved in this project, you have made the decision to uplift the life of a child. Our pledge is to provide the best possible services for each child in our care. For more information on the center, please visit: www.akpotch.org Sincerely Cathy Saayman

JO ANN WHEELER: AMERICAN VOLUNTEER My name is Jo Wheeler, and I had the great honor of volunteering for six months over a two year period at the Abraham Kriel Youth and Child Care Centre. I learned many things while in South Africa, the greatest of all being how to love as Jesus did in serving. My time at the children s home was spent loving the children I met there. Each child I met was unique and special, but they are had a simple commonality they needed to feel special. The housemothers, or Tannies as they are called, have a huge job; they care for 22-26 children, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. And God bless them; they do this with love, patience, and caring. But with that many siblings, you can imagine how each of these precious children is crying out to be seen, heard, and loved to be valued. The sponsor a child program provides a wonderful opportunity for people people like you and me to become a part of a child s life in a very significant way. Participation in the program allows you to help ensure that the doors to the children s home will always remain open and that the children there will have a safe place to live, food on the table, an education suited to their needs, fellowship, and security. But this program is so much more. This program provides an opportunity for you to be a very special part of a child s life. You can be the person who makes a child feel valued and loved. You can become that special person who remembers a child s birthday, sends them a note just to say Hello, encourages them to study hard, and lets them know they are so very special. The rewards for sponsoring a child are priceless. The love that will be returned to you cannot be measured. When I left Abraham Kriel to return to my home in Vero Beach, Florida, I left with 240 grandchildren. Remembering all their birthdays will be difficult. You can help these beautiful children, who ask nothing from anyone, by becoming involved in their lives. I cannot wait to return to Abraham Kriel and see all these children again to hold them, to talk with them, and to just be there for them. Please allow this great joy of a child s love to fill your heart sponsor a child. Sincerely JO ANN WHEELER

ADV. JOHAN PRETORIUS: CHAIRMAN ADVISORY BOARD I am grateful for the fourteen years that I have been involved with the Abraham Kriel Child and Youth Care Centre: grateful for the opportunity to have gained more from this involvement than I have put in; grateful to have seen how damaged children regain their pride and self-confidence through love and devotion; grateful to have been reminded of the power of positive influence; and grateful to have seen the power of hope and faith in action. The challenges faced by care centers have gradually increased to the point that many of them struggle to survive. However, the resourcefulness, skill and professionalism of the personnel of The Abraham Kriel Child and Youth Care Centre have also increased - allowing them to fulfill their mission in the best interest of the children. In such hands, the future and wellbeing of the care centre are ensured, and the task of the Advisory Board made easier. Over the years, the centre has taken an increasing interest in investing in the emotional wellbeing of the children. It is miraculous to see how the children are able to overcome their circumstances, remain cheerful and turn their obstacles into opportunities. I wish that more people could experience the initiative, vivacity and team spirit displayed by these children, for example, when having their own concerts. It is overwhelming, and a lesson in gratitude for the rest of us. ADV. JOHAN PRETORIUS
