Starting to pay pensions brings new challenges for trustees such as calculating and making minimum pension payments, managing assets on a segregated or unsegregated basis, calculating ECPI and correctly claiming expenses. This session will explore different case studies and whether segregation is needed or not, practical steps to do the segregation, including audit, and what implications flow from it. SPEAKERS ANDREA SLATTERY Managing Director /CEO, SMSF Association Andrea is the Managing Director/CEO and Founder of the SMSF Association. As part of the FirstTech team, Craig is responsible for providing specialist technical support to Colonial First State s business and to analyse and communicate technical issues and strategy to financial advisers and their clients. Craig is also a regular speaker at industry and corporate functions, provides media commentary in relation to Australian superannuation and retirement planning issues and is actively involved in providing ongoing professional education and training. DARREN STEVENS Director, Product Management & Strategy, Bravura Solutions Darren Stevens is the Director, Product Management & Strategy at Bravura Solutions and has over 27 years of experience in the financial services sector. SPEAKERS GRAEME COLLEY Director Technical and Professional Standards, SMSF Association Graeme Colley is the Director of Technical and Professional Standards at the SMSF Association where he is responsible for the technical, advocacy and compliance role of SMSF Association. The role assists members in providing high quality advice on all aspects of self-managed superannuation funds. Graeme has over thirty years experience in the superannuation industry and had been involved in many of the changes that have taken place to the government s superannuation policy during that time. This has included formulating policy, developing legislation and providing high level technical advice. His most recent role was as the National Technical Manager for OnePath Australia which involved providing technical advice on superannuation to its adviser network. Prior to that, he was responsible for the co-ordination of superannuation litigation within the ATO. Graeme has co-authored a number of books and publications on superannuation. He lectures at the University of Western Sydney in the Masters of Commerce and at the University of NSW as an adjunct lecturer. He also has experience with a number of leading fund managers and consultants. Graeme s commitment to excellence allows him to be recognised as a leader in the SMSF and Superannuation environment in Australia. HOWARD DICKINSON Director Self-managed Super, With the ATO since 1983, Howard has undertaken a range of roles across income tax and superannuation, including implementation of tax and super reforms. Along with his fellow directors Howard oversees the administration and regulation of SMSFs. In particular Howard manages SMSF auditor compliance monitoring and support products, as well as the requisite liaison with ASIC. Other responsibilities include SMSF risk management and administrative projects such as the recent SMSF penalties regime, contemporary SMSF communications such as the SMSF videos and the provision of online services for trustees. JORDAN GEORGE Senior Manager, Technical & Policy, SMSF Association Jordan George is Senior Manager Technical & Policy at the SMSF Association. Jordan is a key member of the SMSF Association s technical team. He is responsible for managing the SMSF Association s submissions to government and regulators on new policy and legislative measures, and is a main contributor to SMSF Association s advocacy and technical work. Prior to joining the SMSF Association, Jordan spent four years in Canberra at the Australian Treasury where he worked on business tax policy issues, primarily on capital gains tax and also small business and tax administration issues. As such, Jordan brings to the SMSF Association first-hand experience in developing tax policy and legislation, and advising government and Ministers on budget, policy, and regulatory issues. Jordan has a Masters of Taxation at the University of New South Wales, an Honours degree in Economics and a Law degree from Adelaide University, along with a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Australian National University. JULIE STEED Technical Services Manager, Australian Executor Trustees Limited Julie has more than 20 years experience in the superannuation industry as a technical specialist, consultant and client services manager. Julie is responsible for the provision of superannuation technical information, specialising in small funds. Julie has gained extensive experience in assisting trustees, employers and service providers meet a wide range of prudential responsibilities and in helping advisers with the provision of services to clients. Julie is a Senior Fellow of Finsia, a Fellow of ASFA and an accredited SMSF Specialist Advisor with the SMSF Association. KASEY MACFARLANE Assistant Commissioner, Kasey is currently acting in the role of Assistant Commissioner for Self-Managed Superannuation Funds. Prior to joining the ATO in 1999 Kasey worked as a chartered accountant in an accounting firm. During her time at the ATO Kasey has undertaken a number of technical leadership roles and her responsibilities across various tax products have included: technical leadership and input into policy and law development leading the development of ATO public rulings and guidance products leading the management and resolution of tax related strategic litigation matters.
SPEAKERS MARY SIMMONS Director in Superannuation, Mary is a Director in Superannuation, at the, focusing on Self-Managed Superannuation Funds. Mary s current role is managing emerging SMSF issues to ensure compliance with the super and tax rules. Since joining the ATO in 2005, Mary has been part of the Superannuation business area. Mary has been responsible for managing teams across a range of functions, including technical, compliance and risk. Mary has a Bachelor of Commerce and a Diploma in Financial Planning, with over 17 years experience in the industry, specialising on SMSFs. NATHAN BURGESS Director Self-managed Super, With the ATO since 1996, Nathan has undertaken a range of roles across income tax and superannuation, including implementation of super reforms. Along with his fellow directors Nathan oversees the administration and regulation of SMSFs. As the ATO s SMSF risk manager, Nathan is currently responsible for identifying and mitigating SMSF regulatory and income tax risks. This includes developing compliance programs, involvement in settlements and prosecutions and implementing legislative changes. Nathan developed the Super Fund Lookup website to facilitate more efficient rollovers and contributions and created the SMSF annual return. PETER BOBBIN Managing Principal, Argyle Lawyers Peter Bobbin has been the Managing Principal of Argyle Lawyers for the past 20 years. He is recognised as one of Australia s best-known speakers on estate planning, tax and trusts. His areas of expertise also include superannuation, asset protection, financial services distribution and others areas. Peter is a founding trustee-director of Future2 Foundation, an Australia-wide recognised charity. The foundation is a channel through which financial services professionals and those linked to it can make a positive difference to the lives of those in need. Throughout his career, Peter has received recognition for his hard work and expertise, his most recent being awarded Tax Adviser of the Year, SME Category by the Australian Tax Institute. Peter has over 24 years in the industry and has been involved in matters such as lobbying to the NSW State Government and to Senator Cormann. He also displays a heavy involvement in The Tax Institute committees and education programs as well as supporting the profession through his mentoring and teaching with other tax professionals in different firms. Peter is a pre-eminent practitioner in the financial services industry displaying innovation with industry leadership in tax and commitment to the profession through regular speaking. Peter was the only individual (nonassociation) representative invited to the Federal Treasury initiative on the Ralph Report to tax trusts as companies. Peter has frequently been published in specific media outlets such as in the AFR, SMH, Age, BRW, Asset, Money and Management and is constantly sought out for comments on a range of topics associated with taxation or within the financial services profession. PETER SLEGERS Partner, Cowell Clarke Peter Slegers is a Partner at Cowell Clarke and heads up the firm s Tax & Revenue Group. Peter provides specialist tax and superannuation law advice to public accountants, financial advisers, medium to large family businesses as well as high net worth taxpayers. Peter has had significant involvement with SMSFs throughout his career providing advice on SIS compliance, succession planning, business real property transactions and SMSF pensions. PHILIP LAGRECA Head of Technical Services, Multiport Pty Ltd Philip LaGreca is the Head of Technical Services for Multiport Pty Ltd, a specialist in self-managed superannuation fund services. He has been in the superannuation industry since 1980 and worked through the constant changes that have occurred during that time. Philip has responsibility for the Multiport services relating to the establishment of SMSFs, compliance, technical and consulting advice. Prior to this Philip was the National Manager Strategic Services for AM Corporation Limited. In 17 years he held a variety of roles including Manager Technical Services and Compliance Manager for both life and superannuation business lines. Before AM, Philip was with William M Mercer consulting actuaries for 2 years and prior to that time, 4 years with MLC. Philip was a founding member of the Australian Retirement Income Streams Association (ARISA) Technical Committee that had been involved in assisting the Government with issues related to Retirement Income Streams. Philip is a Fellow of the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia and has been a Director representing the Retail Sector and a member of the ASFA Policy Committee and ASFA Disclosure, Marketing and Licensing Sub-Committee and currently a member of the Small Independent Superannuation Funds Association (SISFA) Technical & Policy Development Committees.
