GUAM POST October 02, 2015 To whom it may concern: The Guam Post of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) is currently accepting applications for its 2016 2017 Charlie Corn Scholarship Awards. Enclosed is a copy of the application form and a background sheet describing the scholarship and its eligibility and application requirements. As described in the background sheet, the Charlie Corn Scholarship is to assist in the development of engineering and architectural talent in Guam and Micronesia. Refer to the scholarship application to confirm eligibility requirements. After graduation, applicants must be planning on returning to Guam or Micronesia to begin their professional career. Applications must be received by December 18, 2015 at 5:00 PM, Chamorro Standard time, as one complete document set. If submitting via email, it must be submitted as 1- electronic file. If submitting via hand deliver or postal mail (must be post-marked by the submittal date), it must be in 1- envelope labeled as follows. Only the official transcripts will be accepted as a separate submittal and this must be noted with the full application package and meet the postmark requirement. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. Applicants will be notified of the scholarship awards in January 2016 and will be invited to attend the May 2016 SAME Guam Post Lunch Meeting to be recognized and receive the scholarship awards. (SAME) GUAM POST 2016 2017 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM PURPOSE: The purpose of this scholarship program is to assist in the development of engineering and architecture talent among permanent residents of Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) and Republic of Palau (ROP). SCOPE: It is the intent of this scholarship program to provide a one year scholarship to selected students interested in obtaining a bachelor s degree in engineering or architecture. a) The Guam Post may provide a one year scholarship of up to $3,500 for students who will be attending their first or second year of college and are enrolled in or intend to enroll in an engineering or architecture program at a college or university approved by the Guam Post and leading to an accredited bachelor s degree; b) The Guam Post may provide a one year scholarship of up to $4,000 for students enrolled in an upper level engineering or architecture program approved by the Guam Post and leading to an accredited bachelor s or advanced degree. Scholarship recipients will be selected on an annual basis with the types and numbers of scholarships to be awarded dependent upon the availability of scholarship funds and the number of eligible candidates. Consideration will be given to awarding scholarships to prior year awardees. ELIGIBILITY: To be eligible for the scholarship, a candidate must meet the following qualifications: a) Be a permanent resident of Guam, CNMI, FSM, ROP, or a dependent of active duty or reserve military personnel who are from Guam, CNMI, FSM, or ROP, as described under Purpose ; b) Exhibit sincere interest in obtaining an engineering or architecture undergraduate degree and returning to Guam, CNMI, FSM, or ROP after graduation to begin their professional career ; c) Be accepted to or plan to enroll in an accredited engineering or architecture program. (A candidate may apply for the scholarship before being accepted to the undergraduate program). TO APPLY: Submit the following by December 18, 2015, 5:00 PM, Guam local time: a) The attached 2-page SAME Application for Engineering/Architecture Scholarship; b) Education Goals 500 Word Essay; c) Provide a minimum of two (2) letters of recommendation from persons who are well acquainted with the applicant and can vouch for his or her character, integrity, sincerity, and ability to work with others. One letter shall be from an official from the school most recently attended. All applicants, including past recipients, must submit two letters of recommendation. (Do not include recommendations from immediate family members.) d) Official School transcript (High School or College transcript as applicable); electronic copy is not acceptable. e) SAT or other standard achievement test results. If you did not take one of these tests please state as such on the application form;

f) Students already enrolled in college programs must submit their grades from the last quarter/semester and class schedule for the next quarter/semester. NOTE: Applications will be considered complete and accepted for review only if the above listed documents are included. For applicants not residing on Guam, applications must be post-marked by the submittal date. No extensions will be granted. SELECTION OF SCHOLARS: The best qualified candidates will be selected and awarded scholarships by the Guam Post of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) Guam Post, in January 2016. Selection will be based on the following: aptitude attitude character personal awards / achievements financial need sincerity/interest in becoming a professional engineer or architect University of Guam attendance intention to return to Guam, CNMI, FSM, or ROP, as described above under Purpose returning scholarship recipient Selection will be made following a thorough review of the applications and supporting data by the Scholarship Committee of the Guam Post. The Scholarship Committee reserves the right to conduct interviews with Candidates, either in person or via electronic communication, depending on location. Candidates will be notified of selection results within 30 days of the application closing date. SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS: Recipients will be notified of the scholarship awards in January 2016 and will be invited to attend the May 2016 SAME Guam Post Lunch Meeting to be recognized and receive the scholarship awards. The following are provided as important notes. a) Scholarship payments will be made in equal amounts in May 2016 and January 2017. Prior to the 1 st payment in May 2016, each successful candidate will be required to provide proof of completion of their current 2015-2016 school program and acceptance to an accredited engineering/architecture program. The 2 nd payment will be made upon receipt of full-time registration verification for each term and proof of maintaining an overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (based on a 4.0 system). Full time attendance means that the student is registered for at least the equivalent of 12 semester hours of coursework which satisfies degree requirements. Recipients are also required to submit report cards for each quarter/semester for which scholarship payments were received as proof of quarter/semester completion. b) The SAME reserves the right to request the recipient return any or all scholarship funds for quarters/semesters which the recipient did not or does not plan to complete. Students in CO- OP/work-study programs qualify for scholarship payments only during terms when they are full time students. A partial scholarship payment may be made in the event of partial year attendance. c) Any exceptions to the above should be addressed to the Scholarship Chairperson. d) The recipients are required to become SAME student members after acceptance of the award and will make an effort to reach out to SAME organization(s) near their college/university.
