COLLEGE OF ART & DESIGN TIMELINE 2014 Bradley Cantrell resigns from LSU, and Professor Emeritus Van Cox is appointed interim director of the Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture. 2013 Dean Ken Carpenter steps down and returns to teaching. Alkis Tsolakis is named the new dean of the College of Art & Design. Professor Van Cox steps down as interim director of the Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture, and Associate Professor Bradley Cantrell is appointed the director of the school. Jim Sullivan, associate professor of architecture, is appointed chair of the Department of Interior Design. Lake Douglas, associate professor of landscape architecture, is appointed associate dean of research & development at the College of Art & Design. The School of Architecture s undergraduate and graduate programs are granted the maximum eightyear terms of accreditation by the National Architectural Accreditation Board. 2012 Chair of the Department of Interior Design, T.L. Ritchie, steps down and returns to teaching. Associate Professor Phillip Tebbutt is named interim chair of the department. The Office of Community Design & Development is dissolved, and Marsha Cuddeback accepts a position in the Department of Interior Design. 2011 Jeff Carney, associate professor of architecture, is appointed director of the Coastal Sustainability Studio (CSS), and CSS administration was officially moved to the College of Art & Design. 2010 Professor Elizabeth Mossop steps down as director of the Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture and returns to teaching. Professor Van Cox is named interim director of the school. Dean David Conrath resigns from LSU, and Ken Carpenter, professor of architecture, is appointed interim dean of the College of Art & Design. Tom Sofranko, associate professor of architecture, is named associate dean of academic services for the College of Art & Design. 2009 Professor Jori Erdman is named director of the School of Architecture. Associate Dean Marchita Mauck steps down and returns to teaching art history, and Tom Sofranko, associate professor of architecture, is named interim associate dean of academic services for the College of Art & Design. Associate Dean Stuart Baron resigns from LSU. Rod Parker, associate professor of graphic design is appointed director of the School of Art. Professor Van Cox is appointed assistant director of the Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture. The Coastal Sustainability Studio (CSS), a trans-disciplinary program of the College of Art & Design, College of Engineering, and the School of the Coast & Environment was founded by Louisiana Sea Grant Director Dr. Robert Twilley. CSS was located in the Design Building, and Dr. Twilley was appointed the first director.

Rod Parker, associate professor of graphic design, is appointed interim director of the School of Art. 2007 The School of Landscape Architecture is renamed the Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture. The School of Architecture s undergraduate and graduate programs are granted full (six-year) terms of accreditation by the National Architectural Accreditation Board. 2006 Professor Bosworth returns to teaching architecture, and Associate Professor Tom Sofranko is appointed interim dean of the School of Architecture. Communication across the Curriculum (CxC), a university-wide academic excellence program that works to improve the written, spoken, visual, and technological communication skills of undergraduates while deepening their understanding of discipline-specific content, opened one of four communication studios in the Design Building. The CxC Art & Design Studio exists as a resource for art and design students. 2005 Professor David Cronrath is named dean of the college. Professor Frank Bosworth is appointed director of the School of Architecture. Marsha Cuddeback is named director of the Office of Community Design & Development. The School of Landscape Architecture s accreditation is extended a full (five-year) term. 2004 Professor Elizabeth Mossop is named director of the School of Landscape Architecture. Dean Frederick Ortner steps down and returns to teaching; Professor David Cronrath is named interim dean. The Master of Architecture program is granted an initial (three-year) term of accreditation. 2003 Professor Stuart Baron is appointed as director of the School of Art; Professor Michael Crespo returns to teaching. Associate Professor Ritchie is appointed chair of the Department of Interior Design. Professor Suzanne Turner s appointment as interim director of the School of Landscape Architecture ends. 2002 Professor Frederick Ortner is named dean of the college. Professor Bruce Sharky is appointed as director the college s international program. Suzanne Turner is named interim director of the School of Landscape Architecture. Departmental status is reinstated to the interior design program, and Assistant Professor T.L. Ritchie is named interim chair. 2001 The College of Design s name is officially changed to the College of Art & Design. Associate Professor Wachob returns to teaching, and the Department of Interior Design is merged within the School of Art. Professor Saccopoulos retires, and Professor Ken Carpenter is appointed

interim dean. Professor Michael Daugherty dies, and Professor Crespo is appointed interim director of the School of Art. The interior design program s accreditation is extended a full (sixyear) term. The School of Architecture s accreditation is extended a full (six-year) term. 2000 Professor David Cronrath is appointed director of the School of Architecture. Professor Haynes retires, and Professor Barrett Kennedy is appointed director of the CADGIS research lab and associate dean of research for the college. The School of Landscape Architecture s accreditation is extended a full (five-year) term. 1999 Professor Turner retires, and Professor Marchita Mauck (art history) is appointed as interim associate dean of the college. The Office of Community Design & Development (OCDD) is established, and Professor Frank Bosworth is named director. The interior design program s accreditation is extended a full (six-year) term. 1986 The Microcomputer Office of Design Exploration (MODE) lab is established. The Computer-Aided Design and Geographic Information Systems (CADGIS) research lab is established as a joint facility of the College of Design and the Department of Geography & Anthropology. 1983 Professor Odenwald becomes the second director of the School of Landscape Architecture. Emory Smith donates Hilltop Arboretum to the School of Landscape Architecture. 1982 Dr. Reich retires, and Professor Neil Odenwald is appointed acting director of the School of Landscape Architecture. The graduate program in landscape architecture is accredited. 1981 Professor Jerry Nielson is appointed dean of the College of Design. Jack Haynes resumes duties as associate dean. Professor Shirlee Singer is appointed associate director of the School of Architecture for interior design. Professor Heck returns to teaching, and Professor A. Peters Oppermann is appointed as the director of the School of Architecture. 1980 Dean McLindon retires, and Professor Haynes is appointed acting dean of the College of Design. Professor Smothers returns to teaching, and Professor Robert Heck is appointed acting director of the School of Architecture. 1979 The School of Environmental Design is reorganized as the College of Design and includes the new schools of architecture, art, and landscape architecture. All department head titles are changed to director. 1977 The first full, five-year accreditation for interior design is received. Professor Jack Haynes is appointed assistant dean of the School of Environmental Design. 1976 Professor Walter Rutkowski is appointed head of the Department of Fine Arts. 1975 Professor Wilkinson dies and Professor Tom Cavanaugh is appointed acting head of the Department of Fine Arts. The interior design program applies for initial provisional accreditation by FIDER, and a site visit is conducted. The Department of Construction is transferred to LSU s General College. Professor Fount Smothers is appointed head of the Department of Architecture. 1974 The new degree, Bachelor of Interior Design, is approved.

1973 Interior design is transferred to the Department of Architecture and Professor Jerry Nielson becomes associate head of the program. 1970 The interior design program begins in the Department of Fine Arts. Professor Vincent Guaccero is appointed program coordinator. 1968 Professor Jack Wilkinson is appointed head of the Department of Fine Arts. The Department of Construction is added to the School of Environmental Design. 1967 Associate Professor Dufour returns to teaching. 1966 The Department of Fine Arts is transferred from the College of Arts & Sciences to the School of Environmental Design. Associate Professor Paul Dufour is appointed acting head of the department. 1965 The School of Environmental Design is established with departments of architecture and landscape architecture. Professor Gerald McLindon is named dean of the school. 1964 Landscape architecture is established as a separate department in the College of Agriculture and moved to the H. P. Long Fieldhouse. Dr. Reich is named department head. 1962 The five-year professional program leading to a Bachelor of Architecture is accredited in the Department of Architecture. 1960 The landscape design curriculum title is changed to Landscape Architecture, and the program is accredited by the American Society of Landscape Architects. 1959 The Department of Architecture is established in the College of Engineering and a four-year curriculum is offered leading to the Bachelor of Architecture. 1946 A landscape design program is begun in the Department of Horticulture offering both graduate and undergraduate studies. 1941 Instructor Robert S. Reich joins the Department of Horticulture to establish a program in

landscape architecture. 1933 The Department of Architectural Engineering is established in the College of Engineering and a four-year curriculum is offered leading to the BS in Architectural Engineering.
