FINANCIAL AID WORKSHOP TOOLKIT Your Guide to Planning, Prooting, and Hosting a Successful Financial Aid Workshop On behalf of the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Coission and the College Foundation of West Virginia (CFWV), thank you for agreeing to host a financial aid workshop at your school or organization! Developing a plan to pay for college is a huge step for students and failies. And navigating the financial aid process can be unfailiar territory particularly for first-generation students. To guide failies through this process, you ay want to consider hosting ultiple workshops or prooting various opportunities to learn ore about financial aid. The following pages of this guide outline the types of workshops you ay want to consider. Additionally, it can be helpful to share the following resources with failies: College Goal Sunday: During College Goal Sunday, financial aid experts fro the state s colleges and universities volunteer their tie to help students coplete the FAFSA. Think of College Goal Sunday as a) an additional opportunity for your students to get help, and b) a chance to get one-on-one, personal assistance in working through the FAFSA. College Goal Sunday should not replace your usual financial aid workshop though it is always a good idea to host an Introduction to Financial Aid or Overview of State and Federal Financial Aid workshop in advance of College Goal Sunday. CFWV.co: CFWV.co is West Virginia s free college- and career-planning website. CFWV.co is the best place for students to go to learn about the state s financial aid progras, including the PROMISE Scholarship progra and the West Virginia Higher Education Grant progra. All state-level scholarship applications are housed on CFWV.co. Plus, the site features resources to help students calculate the cost of college, understand student loans, and find additional scholarships and grants. FederalStudentAid.gov: The Office of Federal Student Aid s website, www.federalstudentaid.gov, is a great resource for failies to learn about federal financial aid progras, including the Pell Grant and Federal Direct Student Loans. Social edia tools and scripts: This kit includes Facebook banners you can share in your newsfeed to help draw attention to your workshop. It also includes saple tweets and posts to help you proote your workshop and financial aid awareness. 8. Website banner ads: These are available in two sizes, so that you can include an advertisent for your event on your school s website or EdLine page. TYPES OF FINANCIAL AID WORKSHOPS Providing coprehensive support for your students To help students and failies build their awareness of financial aid, it is iportant to consider financial aid planning as a for of financial literacy. Applying for aid is only one step in the process of developing a plan to pay for college. For any students and failies, especially first-generation college students the concepts surrounding financial aid see foreign. These failies need resources and assistance to guide the step-by-step. Here are soe types of workshops you ight consider hosting. If you do not have the resources or tie to host all of these on your own, you ay want to reach out to financial aid experts at the state s colleges and universities. They often host regional financial aid workshops or are willing to provide extra assistance. Intro to Financial Aid (or Financial Aid 101): An introduction to financial aid workshop will cover the broad concepts surrounding financial aid. Topics to include are... Types of financial aid (the difference between scholarships, grants, loans, etc.) Sources of financial aid (federal, state, institutional, private, etc.) Coon financial aid ters (FAFSA, deferent, EFC, etc.) Calculating the cost of college Sart borrowing and understanding college loans State and Federal Financial Aid Progras: Once failies understand the basics of calculating college costs and finding financial aid, you can begin to discuss financial aid progras. These types of workshops should focus on... State progras (PROMISE Scholarship; Higher Education Grant; Science, Engineering and Technology Scholarship; Underwood-Sith Teacher Scholarship, etc.) Federal progras (Pell Grant, Work Study, Federal Direct Loans, etc.) Institutional scholarships (how to find the) Private scholarships (how to find the) FAFSA Copletion: FAFSA copletion workshops should focus on guiding failies stepby-step through copleting the FAFSA. If possible, it is a good idea to set up coputer labs to allow failies to coplete the FAFSA during the workshop. If that is not possible, you can work through the FAFSA worksheet, so that they will have the inforation ready to coplete online on their own. College Goal Sunday is an exaple of a FAFSA copletion workshop, and it is a great opportunity for your students and failies to receive this sort of assistance. Financial Aid Follow-Up: The financial aid process doesn t end with subiting the FAFSA and other application fors. Students and failies often need assistance understanding their financial aid award letters, navigating payent and deposit deadlines, and aking sart decisions about student loans. It can be useful to work with college or university experts to offer financial aid follow-up workshops in the late spring. FINANCIAL AID QUICK FACTS FOR ALL WEST VIRGINIA STUDENTS ATTENDING COLLEGE IN THE 2015-16 ACADEMIC YEAR Federal Pell Grant The Federal Pell Grant is a need-based grant awarded to students who deonstrate financial need. Award aounts are based on your faily s financial situation and your enrollent status. Basic progra requireents: Students ust: 3 Coplete and subit the FAFSA; 3 Deonstrate financial need. To apply: The 2015-16 FAFSA will be available at www.fafsa.gov on Jan. 1, 2015. For a coplete list of requireents, visit www.studentaid.gov. Award aount: $602 to $5,730 for the 2014-15 acadeic year. West Virginia Higher Education Grant The WV Higher Education Grant Progra is a need-based financial aid progra for WV students. Awards are based on deonstrated financial need (as deterined by the inforation students provide on the FAFSA). Progra requireents: Students ust: 3 Be a citizen of the United States; 3 Be a WV resident for at least 12 onths prior to applying; 3 Be a high school graduate or have earned a GED or TASC diploa; 3 Coplete the FAFSA and deonstrate a certain level of financial need; 3 Deonstrate acadeic proise; 3 Enroll as a full-tie undergraduate student at a participating institution; 3 Have not previously earned a bachelor s degree. Acadeic requireents: Students ust: 3 Have both a core and cuulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher* 3 Meet the iniu test score requireents on either the ACT or the SAT. Miniu Test Score Requireents for PROMISE Eligibility ACT (NATIONAL TEST ONLY) SAT (NATIONAL TEST ONLY) Coposite: 22 Cobined Score: 1020 English: 20 Critical Reading: 490 Math: 20 Math: 480 Science: 20 Reading: 20 * The writing portion of either test is not considered when deterining eligibility. * Must achieve a cuulative grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or whatever is considered a B average, based on county grading policies in both the core courses and overall coursework (weighted grades ay be used). PROMISE Scholarship Progra (continued) To apply: Go to www.cfwv.co/proise and create a WV Student Aid Manageent (SAM) account. Log in to your SAM account and subit the PROMISE application before March 1. You ust also subit the FAFSA by March 1. For additional inforation, visit www.cfwv.co/proise. Deadlines: 3 March 1, 2015: Students ust subit the PROMISE Scholarship application available online at www.cfwv.co and the 2015-16 FAFSA available at www.fafsa.gov. 3 June 6, 2015: Last day to take the SAT to establish eligibility. 3 June 13, 2015: Last day to take the ACT to establish eligibility. Renewal requireents: The PROMISE Scholarship will be renewed autoatically if the scholar has a iniu overall 2.75 GPA on copleted college coursework at the end of the first 12-onth period of enrollent. Thereafter, a 3.0 cuulative GPA is required. A student ust also earn 30 credit hours over each 12-onth period of enrollent to be considered for renewal.** ** A student ay use the subsequent suer ter at his or her expense to coplete the 30-hour credit or GPA requireents. All credits and grades earned starting with the fall seester after high school graduation count toward eligibility for the PROMISE Scholarship. Please reeber that students who lose their PROMISE Scholarship will NOT be able to regain it at a later tie. Engineering, Science and Technology Scholarship Scholarships are awarded on the basis of acadeic qualifications and interest in the science, engineering and technology fields. Priority is given to WV residents. Progra requireents: Students ust: 3 Be a United States citizen or resident alien; 3 Coplete the application available at www.cfwv.co by March 1, 2015; 3 Agree to work full-tie in an engineering, science, or technology field in WV for one year for each year the scholarship was received.* To apply: Subit an application by March 1, 2015. The application will be posted by Dec. 1, 2014 at www.cfwv.co. Award aount: Not to exceed $3,000 per acadeic year. * Students who fail to eet the work requireents are required to repay the scholarship received plus interest and any required collection fees. In extree circustances, a student ay be approved to substitute counity service related to engineering, science, or technology in place of the work requireent. Underwood-Sith Teacher Scholarship The Underwood-Sith Teacher Scholarship Progra was created to enable and encourage students to pursue teaching careers at the preschool, eleentary, iddle, or secondary school level. Undergraduate and graduate scholarships are awarded based on acadeic qualifications and interest in teaching. Progra requireents: Students ust: 3 Be a WV resident; 3 Coplete the application available at www.cfwv.co by March 1, 2015; 3 Agree to teach at a preschool, eleentary, iddle or secondary school in WV for up to two years for each year of scholarship assistance.* To apply: Subit an application by March 1, 2015. The application will be posted by Deceber 1, 2014 at www.cfwv.co. Award aount: Not to exceed $5,000 per acadeic year. * Students who fail to eet the teaching or alternative service requireents are required to repay the scholarship received plus interest and required collection fees. Underwood-Sith Teacher Loan Assistance Progra Individuals who have earned a teaching degree and are certified to teach in WV are eligible to receive up to a $2,000 reiburseent on payents toward student loans in exchange for teaching two years in either a high-need field or a high-need geographic location in WV. Medical Student Loan Progra The Medical Student Loan Progra enables edical students with financial need to apply for loans to pursue a degree of Medical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. Loans ay be forgiven, if students eet certain work requireents after graduation. Progra requireents: Students ust: 3 Be accepted for enrollent or be enrolled full-tie at an eligible WV school of edicine. Priority is given to residents of WV; 3 Loan indebtedness (principal and accuulated interest) ay be forgiven at the rate of up to $10,000 for each 12 consecutive onths of full-tie practice in WV in a qualifying edically under-served areas or specialty. Eligible institutions: Marshall University School of Medicine, West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine and West Virginia University School of Medicine. Award aount: Not to exceed $10,000 per acadeic year.* * The first payent is due one year following the date the borrower ceases to be a full-tie student. Students are not required to ake payents during periods of authorized deferents, such as required ilitary service or approved additional edical training, including internships, residencies, and fellowships for a period not to exceed five years. Health Sciences Scholarship Progra The Health Sciences Scholarship Progra is a recruitent incentive progra for health professions students interested in priary care and rural health in West Virginia. Eligibility: Students in their final year of a graduate progra in allopathic or osteopathic edicine, pharacy, dentistry, nursing (idwives, nurse practitioners, nurse educators), physician assisting, physical therapy, social work or clinical psychology can apply. Higher Education Adult Part-Tie Student Grant (HEAPS) WV HEAPS enables students who deonstrate a financial need to pursue postsecondary education on a part-tie basis. To apply: Subit a FAFSA and contact the institution you plan to attend for further requireents. The 2015-16 FAFSA will be available on Jan. 1, 2015. Eligible institutions: WV s career and technical education facilities, counity colleges, public colleges and independent colleges. Award aount: The award aount varies, depending on the progra of study and the student s financial need. HEAPS - Workforce Developent Coponent The WV Higher Education Adult Part-Tie Student (HEAPS) Progra Workforce Developent Coponent is awarded to students who deonstrate a financial need and enroll in a postsecondary certificate, industry-recognized credential or other skill developent progra in deand in WV. To apply: Applicants ust subit the HEAPS Workforce Developent Application, which is available through each institution s financial aid office, and coplete a current FAFSA. The 2015-16 FAFSA will be available on Jan. 1, 2015. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis beginning July 1. Funding is liited and awards are ade on a first-coe, first-serve basis. Award aount: The cost of the progra, not to exceed $2,000. Students enrolled in ultiple progras for a single acadeic year can receive a axiu of $2,000 total for all progras. Eligible institutions: Many career and technical education facilities, counity colleges, state colleges and universities, independent colleges and universities and proprietary institutions in WV. Can be used for: Eligible progras for funding reiburseent are non-credit skill upgrade progras that copleent WV Developent Office initiatives for targeted industries or targeted eployers, proote job creation or retention,or assist in developing skills for new econoy jobs or high perforance workplaces. The WV Council for Counity and Technical College Education, with input fro the WV Developent Office, annually sets prograatic funding priorities.
