1 Nursing Opportunities at Gordon College A career in nursing is both a popular and rewarding option for students interested in a health related profession. It is a copetitive area of study to get into, and having the knowledge and experience that is required will give an advantage to a student interested in pursuing this career goal. Having an organized plan of study and volunteer experience fro the beginning will give this advantage. This docuent ais to give direction to those interested in attending Gordon and what their options are for studying for a career in nursing, and how to prepare for continuing their studies after graduation. Gordon College offers pre- nursing coursework for those interested in entering into the nursing field. There are several ajors to choose fro that will lead the student in that direction. One can choose any ajor they are interested in as long as they follow the health professions pre- nursing track. The pre- nursing track ensures that students will have taken the ost coon pre- requisite classes when they later apply to nursing schools. The ost coon ajors for students to choose if nursing is their career goal are kinesiology, cheistry or biology. Volunteering is also an iportant part of getting an advantage when applying to nursing schools. These opportunities will be discussed in greater detail in this docuent. 1

2 Majors There are three courses of study that students coonly choose to prepare for continuing in nursing after Gordon College. These ajors are kinesiology, biology and cheistry. If you decide to choose another ajor you can still follow the health professions concentration, which will prepare you for ost nursing school applications. Kinesiology- Biology- Cheistry- By following the links above you will be directed to Gordon College s website page containing inforation on each ajor for you to take into consideration when deciding which route to take. You will also be able to find coplete course descriptions in the Gordon College acadeic catalog on the Gordon website. Once you choose a ajor, it is recoended to follow the health professions concentration for nursing. This is helpful for applying to schools after you earn your degree fro Gordon, because this health professions track ensures that you have taken the ost coon classes needed to apply for nursing progras. To declare a concentration you can either get the fors in person fro the registrar, or go online and download the fors fro the registrars website. Schools do vary in what classes are required for adission, so it would be helpful to know ahead of tie if you have all the pre- requisites for the schools you would like to apply to in the future. Knowing at least by the end of your sophoore year will give you enough tie to plan for classes you need to take either at Gordon or off capus. Health Professions Track 2, requireents- Nursing BIO 150: Biology 1 Cells and Genetics CHE 111, 112: Principles of Cheistry I, II KIN 213, 214: Huan Anatoy and Physiology I, II MAT220: Biostatistics BIO 225: Nutrition BIO 314: Microbiology If your chosen ajor and health professions track is followed carefully you are ostly well prepared for applying to ost nursing progras. There are a few things that you should be aware of before the application process. 2

3 Many nursing progras will ask for a public speaking course o Gordon offers COM240 Public Speaking It is iportant to note that any progras want a lifespan psychology class fro birth to death o Gordon offers PSY 394 Lifespan Psychology (offered spring seester) o North Shore Counity College, Endicott and other NECCUM ebers offer a lifespan psychology class Microbiology, and Nutrition are offered alternate years. When creating your schedule it is iportant to find out what years these will be offered to ensure you can fit the in your schedule depending on the year they will be taught. Many schools want writing courses, sociology courses and other courses that are offered by Gordon s core curriculu. This is another reason why it is iportant to know what schools you are going to apply to early. You can plan what core classes you are going to take around the pre- requisites of your schools of choice. 4 Volunteering/ Eployent Opportunities Any volunteering experience you have before applying to nursing schools will give you an advantage copared to other applicants. Below are soe volunteering options in the area, and testionies fro Gordon students who were able to get involved in volunteering opportunities in the area. Beverly Hospital Beverly Hospital has volunteering progras specifically for students. At their website you can download the application and reference fors. Beverly Hospital asks volunteers to coit to at least 50 hours of work over a calendar year. 5 Gordon Student Experience Alissa Watson was a student at Gordon College who was pursuing a career in nursing. She was a Biology ajor with a Health Professions Concentration, and graduated in May The following was an interview conducted to know the benefits of volunteering for those interested in the healthcare field. 1. At what location/s was your volunteering experience? Last year I worked as the receptionist at the Gordon College Health Center where I was able to work with a Nurse Practitioner, a PA, two Registered Nurses, and a doctor. I learned about the office part of working in a healthcare setting and I was able to help greet patients, pull their charts, answer phones, etc. This past suer I worked as a full tie EMT- Basic at Cap Wonderland, a Christian cap in Sharon, MA that is run by The Salvation Ary. I worked on the Health Unit Staff with an RN and a Nurse Practitioner. I was able to get hands on experience using y EMT skills, and I was able to help the kids and the staff when they had any sort of edical issue (fro taking care of splinters and sall cuts, to eergencies involving broken bones, lacerations needing stitches, various respiratory/allergy eergencies, etc.) 2. Did you learn of this opportunity through Gordon? If not how did you learn about it? I sought out the job at the Health Center yself. I went in and asked if they had any openings and they happened to have an opening that year. My boss fro Cap Wonderland was at Gordon in Lane at a booth looking for staff that suer. She asked e what I was doing for the suer/what I was studying and she told e about the Health Unit job. I had just gotten y EMT certification, and it seeed like a perfect outlet for using y skills. I glad Gordon brings various caps and people to Lane who offers suer positions. 3. Do you feel like volunteering better prepared you for future opportunities, either in continuing school or for your planned career? Yes, I definitely feel ore prepared for y future through working at cap and the Gordon Health Center. I will be going to Nurse Practitioner School this suer, and cap helped e see that pediatrics is the area of edicine that I want to work in. 4. Please note anything else you think would be helpful for students interested in volunteering in the health care field I would say that acquiring an EMT or CNA license during your suer after your freshan year is a necessary step for future healthcare opportunities. I got y EMT the suer after y sophoore and I wished I had gotten it earlier so I 5

6 could have worked at cap for two suers instead of one. Certifications open lots of doors for ore volunteering experience/health care jobs. Eergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification It is beneficial to obtain your EMT certification while you have tie to volunteer before applying to nursing schools. This gives you the advantage gaining experience, which is what nursing schools will like to see. 7 Nursing School Applications There are any schools in the area that offer accelerated nursing progras that are worth applying to. An accelerated progra is for those applicants who already hold a bachelors degree. Depending on the progra, once you have copleted the coursework you will have either a Bachelors of Science or a Masters. I will list just a few below.
