D1. General Information about Program INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS MASTER S DEGREE PROGRAM Approved by the Higher Education Council in 1992, our department was established in 1994. It was established with the University Senate decision, and the graduate program (with thesis) was initiated in the 1997-1998 academic year. In the 2012-2013 academic year the Peace and Conflict Studies graduate program (with thesis) was also launched. The graduate program, in principle, is pursued with an interdisciplinary approach. That is why, it seeks to determine the cause-effect relationships by considering the historical, societal, political, legal, economic and psychological aspects of the issues of focus, and as a result, it is careful about not making substantial claims. The main goal of the graduate program is to confer the students the criteria and academic format they will use after acquiring their graduate degree while they prepare reports and analyses in the future. Thereby, students who aim to pursue a further academic degree will acquire the basic knowledge on methodology they would use during the doctoral program. Our graduate program took on the mission to follow the scientific literature and current resources on international relations, to produce independent analyses by using the advanced knowledge acquired in international law, diplomatic history, International Relations theories in defining and analyzing international problems and developing strategy and policy proposals based on these analyses. The students of the graduate program are provided with the skills to critically evaluate their knowledge of the international relations, to make scientific studies by analyzing the global and regional issues through the perspectives of international relations theories and to participate into the individual and group based studies of the department aimed to solve these disputes and issues. In the scientific studies conducted by the graduate program, advanced diplomatic and academic English is used, computer technologies are applied, and during the process of the transfer of the acquired knowledge, academic Turkish is effectively taken advantage of. Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples Since our International Relations Graduate Program is a popular one, candidates from numerous fields, including the students of our department, apply for it. Our department tries its the best to meet these demands since it values interdisciplinary studies. However, it does not either negatively or positively discriminate to that end. It is a challenging task to have the occupational profiles, because a great number of our students who come to our department already have careers. Still, it is possible to give the profile of the incoming students. Accordingly, they come mainly from state institutions, primarily from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of the EU, Ministry of Interior, Prime Ministry, Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Development, Ministry of Customs and Trade and TIKA; from international organizations and their sub-divisions, such as the UN, UNICEF and UNHCR. They also include members of the Turkish military, lawyers, engineers, members of the Security Department, linguists and litterateurs. Some of our graduates/alumni are able to continue PhD studies in reputable universities in Turkey or abroad with several scholarships. After these studies, the number of the academic staff working in numerous universities, which include our alumni, is increasing in a way to form the future academic cadres. D13.
