2 It is no exaggeration to say that if community colleges did not exist, the U.S. would have to find other ways to educate most of the men and women who put out fires, fight crime, expand firms, and care for the sick and elderly. America, as we know it, is inconceivable without the contributions of community colleges. National Commission on Community Colleges (2008) 2

5 Provide policymakers, educators, including counselors, and students/families with a rich array of data illustrating the scope and complexity of the community college mission. Highlight the progress and success of community college students. Educate the public about the scope of metrics currently being used to measure community college student success. Illustrate how metrics were derived, the proper use of the metrics, and the need for new metrics in areas where none currently exist. Facilitate a national discussion about metrics that best illustrate the progress of community college students. Spur efforts to systematize metrics that are national in scope. Promote awareness and communication across national college completion initiatives. 5
