4 1. BroadCloud PBX Polycom VLAN Overview The BroadCloud PBX service supports the use of a centralized configuration server that provides each IP End Point with device/user specific configuration. Local user settings take precedence over the configuration server files and cause the BroadCloud PBX service to not function as designed. As a result, local user access to the VLAN menu and other administrative settings is restricted. In order to ensure that local network settings do not interfere with the end point's ability to interface with the BroadCloud PBX service, VLAN tagging is only supported via the support tab from an Agent Administrator login. It is important to note that once a VLAN tag has been sent to a device via the configuration file, the device will only work on that VLAN. The VLAN Tag cannot be changed until the device contacts the configuration server again. 2. BroadCloud PBX Polycom VLAN Support The BroadCloud PBX service supports the use of a virtual LAN (VLAN) to separate and assign higher priority to a voice VLAN as a way of minimizing latency. There are several methods in which the Polycom phone can be configured to work on a particular VLAN. These include Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP), Compatible Cisco Discovery Protocol, VLAN Discovery Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and Static VLAN ID settings on the device. Not all options are support on the BroadCloud PBX service. If the phone receives a VLAN setting from multiple of the above methods, the priority is as follows (from highest to lowest): LLDP CDP Device settings DHCP VLAN discovery 2.1 Link Layer Discovery Protocol LLDP is a vendor-neutral Layer 2 protocol that allows a network device to advertise its identity and capabilities on the local network. If enabled, the phone will use the LLDP protocol to communicate with the network switch for certain network parameters. Most often this will be used to set the VLAN that the phone should use for voice traffic. It also reports power management to the switch. The use of this feature is deactivated on the BroadCloud PBX service. 2.2 Compatible Cisco Discovery Protocol CDP is a proprietary Data Link Layer network protocol. CDP Compatible follows the same set of rules. If enabled, the phone will use CDP-compatible signaling to communicate with the network switch for certain network parameters. Most often this will be used to set the VLAN that the phone should use for Voice Traffic, and for the phone to communicate its PoE power requirements to the switch. The use of this feature is deactivated on the BroadCloud PBX service. 2.3 DHCP VLAN Discovery DHCP VLAN Discovery is an automatic configuration protocol used on IP networks. To change this parameter, go to DHCP Menu. To use DHCP for assigning VLANs, see Assigning a VLAN ID 2013 BroadSoft, Inc. Page 1

5 Using DHCP. Note that the use of DHCP for assigning VLANs is not well standardized and is recommended only if the switch equipment does not support LLDP or CDP Compatible methods. This requires the boot server option to be set to Custom or Fixed. When the Boot Server parameter is set to Custom, this parameter specifies the DHCP option number in which the phone will look for its boot server. It must be noted that in this configuration the boot server option cannot be the same as the VLAN IF for options 128 to 254. When the Boot Server parameter is set to Fixed, this parameter will use predefined DHCP vendor-specific option values of 128, 144, 157 and 191. The use of this feature is deactivated on the BroadCloud PBX service. 2.4 Static Device Settings The VLAN ID can be manually set for the phone from a configuration file. This is done by an authorized Agent Administrator account from the support tab of the MySite Dashboard for a site or location BroadSoft, Inc. Page 2
