Product Component Overview Stratusphere is certified for use with VMware and Citrix desktop virtualization platforms, and is compatible with other desktop virtualization components such as third-party brokers. The product includes three virtual appliances (pre-packaged and self-contained VMs), the Stratusphere Hub, the Stratusphere Database and the Network Station, and a software agent called the Connector ID Key that is delivered along with the Stratusphere Hub. Stratusphere Hub delivered as a virtual appliance (pre-configured VM), it provides the central policy management, policy distribution, data collection, reporting and alerting system for Stratusphere. The main interface is accessed through a standard web browser, and the virtual appliance also has a command line console for appliance setup and administration. Additionally, Stratusphere-collected metrics and information are also accessible via the Hub through a published API. Stratusphere Database delivered as a preconfigured virtual appliance, it provides the central data storage option for the Stratusphere solution. This optional appliance is used for high performance architecture for larger number of desktop deployments. The Stratusphere Hub Appliance saves all the data it receives from other components into the database appliance. Network Station also delivered as a virtual appliance, it provides the network monitoring for Stratusphere, typically deployed as one per virtual host where virtual desktops reside. Connected to the virtual switch and configured for passive monitoring, it tracks network latency, response times and bandwidth consumption. Data collected by the Network Station is enhanced by the user and machine information provided by Connector ID Keys. Network Stations are controlled and managed by the Stratusphere Hub. Connector ID Key a small-footprint software agent that is employed to gather endpoint configuration and performance data from physical or virtual machines on which it is installed. Additionally, Connector ID Keys are also used to add tracking information to network connections, allowing detailed monitoring of network latency, response times and bandwidth consumption per machine and per user. Connector ID Keys are managed through the Stratusphere Hub. Versions are available for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows as well as versions for RedHat, SuSE and Ubuntu Linux variants. Stratusphere Solutions: Deployment Best Practices Guide Page 3
Architecture Performance As noted, the Stratusphere Hub Appliance serves as the center of the Stratusphere architecture. It acts as the front-end Web user interface as well as the central data collector for other Stratusphere sensors. The Hub Appliance works closely with the Database Appliance for storing and retrieving data for analysis, troubleshooting, alerting and reporting. The sensors of the architecture, Network Stations and CID Keys, collect and upload data to the Stratusphere Hub Appliance, which is then stored in the Database Appliance (if it has been installed). This architecture can be seen in the following diagram: It should be noted that the quantity of data collected by Stratusphere is variable, depending on factors such as CID Key call back frequency, number of desktop VMs and data retention policy. Similarly, the traffic captured by each Network Station is also variable, depending on the type of monitoring policies specified and the number of connections observed within the environment. A noisy network environment will cause a significant increase in the amount of network traffic-related data to be captured by the Network Station and stored by the Database Appliance. Endpoint data collected by the CID Keys typically averages less than 100KB for each period of data collection. This data includes machine, user, application process, resource utilization, performance statistics, and other user experience-based metrics. In total, the information provides enough detail to offer visibility into past events, inclusive of the corresponding infrastructure that supports the environment. Stratusphere Solutions: Deployment Best Practices Guide Page 4
Testing for Required Attributes The aforementioned metrics are captured continuously and require an appropriate allocation of resources to ensure all Stratusphere components perform and meet reliability requirements. Liquidware Labs conducts performance, reliability and scalability tests on the Stratusphere architecture at each major release of the product. These tests include the use of automated software tools to simulate sustained CID Key and Network Station uploads to the Stratusphere Hub and Database Appliances. The health of the Hub Appliance, Database Appliance, and Network Stations are monitored throughout testing to ensure all processes function as designed. In addition, this testing also validates that all background maintenance tasks complete as designed and that all data is uploaded, extracted, and stored in the database in the most reliable and effective manner. For each of these tests, Liquidware Labs closely monitors the CPU, RAM, Disk and IOPs utilization of each appliance and component to understand all requirements for production customer deployments. Liquidware Labs has collected this data over time, based on internal performance testing and production deployments, to provide these deployment best practices and guidelines for large enterprise deployments. Stratusphere Solutions: Deployment Best Practices Guide Page 5
Deployment Best Practices, Recommended Settings and Sizing The following represents deployment best practices as well as recommended settings for the Stratusphere architecture. Because every environment is different, it is important to understand how you intend to employ Stratusphere and ensure you provision your environment to use an appropriate amount of vcpus, RAM and disk space. More specific sizing details can be determined based on the online Stratusphere Sizing Tool. Other recommended Stratusphere architecture settings and a sizing example are also provided below. Please note these guidelines are broad and should be adjusted as use cases can vary depending on a number of factors such as number of applications employed, network protocols monitored, etc. The following infrastructure best practices should be considered to maximize scalability and performance: The Stratusphere Hub and Database appliances are enterprise-class server VMs that should be provisioned with server-class infrastructure without CPUs, RAM and IOPs resource contention. The Stratusphere architecture should be deployed on a production platform, ideally on a dedicated operations/management platform. If this is not possible, hosting the Stratusphere architecture with server-class workloads is preferred Stratusphere should not be deployed on the same infrastructure with desktop VM workloads. The Stratusphere Hub and Database appliances must be on the same virtual host at all times. Liquidware Labs recommends that resource affinity rules be used to ensure the Stratusphere Hub and Database Appliances are always on the same virtual host at all times. For example, you should disable features such as VMware vmotion and Distributed Resource Scheduling (DRS). The Stratusphere Database Appliance requires significant and sustained storage performance. Specifically, the database partition/disk should be provisioned on a high-end, top-tier storage platform as it will greatly benefit high levels of IOPs. Use of DNS name(s) for the Stratusphere Hub is preferred as Stratusphere CID Keys are branded with the DNS name when calling in. This practice affords administrators with the flexibility to change the location of the Hub within the data center without loss of connectivity to the CID Key. It is important to monitor and ensure there is adequate space available on the Stratusphere Database appliance to avoid resource constraints and frequent purging of older data. If using Stratusphere Network Stations, constantly review policies to ensure the right network traffic is being monitored and stored. Network Stations can collect a lot of data especially on noisy networks, which can contribute to additional Hub and Database appliance load. Be sure to delete network policies that are no longer required or in use. Liquidware Labs recommends the creation of a snapshot backup of an appliance prior to upgrade. That said, be aware of these snapshots as they can accumulate over time, adversely affecting overall performance. Please be sure snapshots are removed after verifying an upgrade is functioning as expected. Keep all Stratusphere appliances up to date by applying the latest release upgrades. Liquidware Labs is constantly optimizing and enhancing its appliances. Stratusphere Solutions: Deployment Best Practices Guide Page 6
Recommended Stratusphere Architecture Settings In addition to the above best practices, there are a number of considerations and settings that should be closely monitored to ensure adequate performance and availability of relevant resources. Data retention for in-guest metrics and other captured infrastructure details should not exceed 60 days. This preserves both overall Stratusphere performance as well as recommended resources deployment guidelines noted above. CID Keys should be maintained at a 1 hour callback frequency with a 5 minute inspection sample interval. CID Key process inspection will be limited to top 20 percent of all processes by usage. Usage will be determined in the categories of CPU, Memory, Disk IO and application load times. When troubleshooting or performing diagnostics on a targeted group or users/machines, this value can be temporarily set to 100 percent, as needed. Example Stratusphere UX Sizing Exercise By way of example, we present a Stratusphere architecture based upon an environment comprised of two data centers, each with a single virtual desktop infrastructure cluster. Each cluster is comprised of 16 hosts, supporting 3,000 VMs per data center. Overall, the total number of global users will be 6,000 with a data retention period of 60 days. Also note that Stratusphere components below have been sized with the best practices and recommendations noted above. To that end, the Stratusphere Architecture will include one Hub and Database pair per data center. Additionally, 32 Network Stations will be deployed, one for each host server. Required resources for the two Stratusphere Hub Appliances will be: Estimated Resources for each Hub Appliance Central Processing Units 4 vcpus Memory 8 GB RAM Storage HD 1 (OS) Default (20 GB) Storage HD 2 (SWAP) Default (4 GB) Storage HD 3 (DB + DB TMP + DB LOG) 20 GB The two (2) estimated Stratusphere Database Appliances will each require: Estimated Resources for each Database Appliance Appliance Central Processing Units 4 vcpus Memory 16 GB RAM Storage HD 1 (OS) Default (10 GB) Storage HD 2 (SWAP) Default (8 GB) Storage HD 3 (DB) 322 GB Storage HD 4 (DB TEMP) 645 GB Storage HD 5 (DB LOG) * Default (4 GB) Stratusphere Solutions: Deployment Best Practices Guide Page 7
The thirty two (32) estimated Stratusphere Network Stations will each require: Estimated Resources for each Network Station Central Processing Units 1 vcpus Memory 768 MB RAM Storage Default (5 GB) Liquidware Labs has observed that at times the hypervisor does not schedule virtual machines with 4 vcpus as often as it does for 1 vcpu or 2 vcpu machines. In these circumstances, we have seen performance improve if the appliances are allocated 2 vcpus. Related, if the hypervisor is very lightly loaded and has a lot of free unallocated vcpus available, 4 vcpus or higher could help improve the overall user experience for the Stratusphere administrator.
