3 Welcome The Low-Mitchell family of Balcormo Stud in Leven, Fife, has decided to downsize and this catalogue offers you the chance to buy into a breeding operation that has been planned meticulously since the early 1970s. The family will retain some stock and continue breeding on a smaller scale. Dad s now 90, Mum s approaching 80 and I m 21 (again!), so we d like fewer horses and more time to produce them. I m also keen to expand the training side of the business, says Sandra Low-Mitchell. The family has invested a huge amount of knowledge and time into every one of the horses at the stud - whether home-bred or bought in. Here is their story In 1970, Dugald and Jacky Low-Mitchell made a change of direction that was to alter the face of sport horse breeding in Scotland. They were dairy farmers near Peebles until Dugald sold the entire farm lock, stock and barrel and didn t tell Jacky until the sale was completed! They moved into their new home Balcormo complete with their two children, Jennifer and Sandra, three horses and two kids ponies, built some stables in the existing farm buildings and began taking in hunt liveries at 7 per week. Dugald s love was hunting, while Jacky had competed at top level show born when they bought two stallions. The Thoroughbred, Boston Two Step, breeding, while the sire of the Arab/Connemara Padraig was Naseel, one of the stallions credited with producing the British riding pony. Jacky and Dugald started breeding their own horses and taking in visiting mares, while still doing hunt liveries. They built the indoor school that stands at Balcormo today and after extending it three years later, began running to pick up local children and their ponies, so that they could compete at the shows.

4 In 1979, on a trip to Holland, Dugald bought a three-year-old colt by Rigoletto out of a Porter mare. It was an inspired purchase. As well as becoming an excellent performer himself, Secundus was one of only a handful of Britishbased stallions to be awarded the coveted Keur Preferent status by the KWPN in recognition of his progeny s quality and competition records. He was top British show jumping stallion in 1996, 1999 and 2000 and many of Balcormo s current horses still carry his genes. Before moving into horses, Dugald had AI d his own cattle and realising that this would be the way forward for Britain s sport horse breeding industry, he went to Kentucky to learn about the process from a top equine vet. In 1987, he added another Dutch Warmblood stallion, Dramiro, to Balcormo s stallion roster. Dramiro is still going strong at the grand old age of 27 and in every discipline and his progeny is still winning well. The Low-Mitchells began using AI at this time - Priscilla the original homemade phantom mare is going strong to this day - and shortly afterwards Dugald worked with leading equine reproduction vet Martin Boyle to collect and freeze semen from many Scottish-based stallions. The Low-Mitchells were also at the forefront of the modern show centre three-day shows are still remembered fondly - and these attracted enormous At the same time, the stud side of the family business was growing considerably. More stables were built, a horse-walker installed and Dugald ran the operation from his portacabin laboratory - known fondly as the sex shop! From the early days, Balcormo has produced horses that perform and win in all three major disciplines and the stud carries on breeding award-winning stock today. These are all registered with Scottish Sports Horse, the association of which Dugald and Jacky were among the founder members. They are still the Honorary President and Company Secretary. Although Jennifer moved to South Africa with her husband - and is now breeding Scottish Sports Horses there - Sandra Low-Mitchell has taken up the business reins at Balcormo Stud.

5 A UKCC accredited coach, Sandra runs daily and residential clinics at the stud and produces and competes horses at top level. She is also in demand worldwide as a judge of young horses. Her current staff members at the stud Foster - a New Zealand rider who will event some of the horses. In 2007, the main yard was rebuilt and Dugald and Jacky moved into a new home they designed and built to enable them to enjoy a slightly slower pace of life. There are still around 14 selected mares foaling each year, plus visiting mares and outside stallions for semen collection. The family is also standing four stallions for the 2012 season This catalogue has been produced to show the majority of our current stock at Balcormo. We will have a section on the website dedicated to this which will be updated regularly. This will include videos and photographs showing the progress and performance of the horses. He was broken in in 2011 and then turned away - is recently now back into work.
