1 First announcement XVII Conference of the International Soil Conservation Organization (ISCO) Environmental sustainability through soil conservation July 2013 Medellin, Colombia (South America). ISCO Conferences To date, sixteen ISCO conferences have been held, namely in; Belgium (1978), UK (1980), USA (1983), Venezuela (1985), Thailand (1988), Ethiopia - Kenya (1989), Australia (1992), India (1994), Germany (1996), USA (1999), Argentina (2000), China (2002), Australia (2004), Morocco (2006), Hungary (2008) and Chile (2010), covering regions and continents around the world, with different bio-physical, cultural, social and economic conditions.

2 Introduction. ISCO (International Soil Conservation Organization) is an organization whose main aim is to promote the sustainable, productive and efficient use of soil and water resources around the world. With this objective, ISCO periodically organizes conferences every 2 to 3 years to analyze and exchange the latest information and research, addressed to find solutions to the increasing degradation problems of the basic resources soil and water, on which the very sustainability of life on earth is based. The participants at these conferences cover a wide variety of disciplines according to the ISCO objectives, which include: 1) Evolution of soil and water degradation in different parts of the World 2) Causes, effects and evaluation systems of soil and water degradation processes. 3) Development and adoption of new systems and practices of soil and water conservation on lands with different and changing uses and managements. 4) Socio-economical and legal aspects (including the role of public and private organizations and conventions at different levels) on the study, adoption and application of practices and sustainable systems of soil and water conservation at local, national, and regional levels. Furthermore, a central subject is selected at each conference, either according to the most relevant problems faced in the region where the conference is being held, or according to more current worldwide problems. The possibility to present and discuss other subjects included in the ISCO vast objectives is not excluded. ISCO 2013 On this occasion, the XVII ISCO Conference will be held in Medellin (Colombia), and the following central and specific topics have been selected: Central topic: Environmental Sustainability through Soil Conservation Specific topics: 1) Land planning, soil and water conservation 2) Physical, chemical and biological processes in soil conservation and degradation 3) Hydrological processes in soil degradation and associated natural disasters 4) Environmental dynamics associated with land use changes 5) Carbon sequestration and climatic change 6) Environmental impact of the mining industry on soils and waters 7) Degradation of soils and biofuel production

3 Publication The extended abstracts and conclusions of this scientific conference will be subsequently published in a special edition of the journal Suelos Ecuatoriales, edited by the Sociedad Colombiana de Ciencias del Suelo ( ). About Medellin Located in the Central Range of the Colombian Andes, it is the second most important city in Colombia, with an estimated population of inhabitants, an extension of 380 km 2 and an average temperature of 24o C. It is a city with fresh winds (trade winds), named the capital of eternal spring due to its exceptional climatic conditions and the warmth of its people. Medellin is located in an intra-andean valley (called the Aburra Valley) which the Medellin river crosses and is surrounded by mountains with heights of up to 3 200m. There are five hills in the city which look out onto the immensity of the Aburra Valley. Medellin is a modern, dynamic city, and is considered the Colombian cultural capital, a pioneer in the service and energetic sectors, a leader in Latin America urban transport, thanks to its metro and cable railway. The main attraction is the Antioquia museum, with the largest worldwide collection of sculptures and paintings by the worldknown artist Botero.
