Geographic Information Systems Research Center, Feng Chia University (GIS.FCU) No. 100 Wenhwa Rd., Seatwen District, Taichung, Taiwan Telephone: Facsimile: The Development of Client Application for Present the EO Resources in the GEOSS Architecture Implementation Pilot Phase 4 (AIP-4) Response Due Date: 8 May 2011 Business POC Name: Lan-Kun Chung Business POC [email protected] Technical POC Name: Chia-Hao Chen Technical POC [email protected] Business POC phone: ext 300 Technical POC phone: ext 390
GIS.FCU Response to the GEOSS AIP-4 CFP 1 Overview AIP-4 will increase the accessibility of GEOSS datasets identified as supporting Critical Earth Observation Priorities by the GEO User Interface Committee (UIC) and increase the use of the data through promoting availability of new data services, clients, and applications building on accomplishments of prior AIP phases. AIP is GEO Task AR-09-01b conducted under the purview of the GEO Architecture and Data Committee (ADC). AIP-4 will focus on enabling key global EO data sources with standard service interfaces and generalized clients, supporting brokered search, and supporting community publisher and user requirements through integration with the GEOSS Common Infrastructure (GCI). 2 Proposed Contributions The goal of service oriented architecture is to augment the reusability of existing components or services as well as to reduce the inefficiency of duplicated investment(develop the same components/services), leverage the synergy of contributed software/data components registered on service portal by using standard interface or protocol. However, some users feel disappointed with service oriented architecture. One of the problems of service oriented architecture is that the end users and/or sponsors can t perceive the value and power of this architecture easily from the very beginning. For example, in the current GEO portal, various EO services and components have been registered on the portal. However, some of them are offered by service interfaces, it obviously makes no sense to the end users, especially for those who need the downloadable data to do advanced analysis instantly, can t benefit from the current architecture. Services like WMS offers interfaces to standardize access method might make sense to expert or advanced end users but not for the end users. To reveal the value of GEO portal, additional data searching and examination and mechanism should be come up with in AIP-4. In this proposal, we d like to strengthen the usage of priority EO data by developing a downloadable desktop client. 2.1 Activity #2: Clients and Mediated Access Enablers- Components that enable exploitation of Priority EO Data Sources In this proposal, we d like to develop a downloadable desktop client to meet the requirement of browsing the priority EO data sources, following are the concept of this idea The operational view of desktop client The downloadable desktop client is a standalone application, it offers the graphic user interface to query data by keywords, data type, or boundary to retrieve data from the 2
current GCI portal. This desktop client will interact with GCI web service, and get the list of workable/available data from GCI portal, user can browse and overlay even do some further analysis by using this desktop client Functionalities Figure1. Sequence Diagram for downloadable desktop client This downloadable desktop client will be developed on Quantum GIS Quantum GIS (QGIS) is a user friendly Open Source Geographic Information System (GIS) licensed under the GNU General Public License. QGIS is an official project of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) The product of this proposal will be a plug-in for QGIS which allow end user to discover and browse the services/data in QGIS Figure 2 illustrates the functionalities which will be developed in AIP-4(grey area) 3
2.1.3 Expected outcome Figure 2 Functionality of downloadable desktop client Figure 3 shows the services/data query interface in QGIS, end user can discover services/data by using the interface which is integrated in QGIS, in the following example, a service called WMS for TRMM data Products is discovered by typing the keyword Rainfall. Figure 3 Downloadable desktop client user interface design - 1 Figure 4 shows the services/data can be browsed in QGIS when users click the checkbox. 4
Figure 4 Downloadable desktop client user interface design Attendance and demonstration at GEO Plenary The participants of GIS.FCU will participate in the GEO plenary and of course, to demonstrate the achievement of AIP-3 and other achievements developed in AIP-4. 3 Description of GIS Research Center, Feng Chia University(GIS.FCU) 3.1 Responding Organization GIS.FCU has long-term contract with Taiwanese government for over 15 years. GIS.FCU participates in planning and implementing debris flow observation stations and helps government to make high-quality decisions since During the nine years, we built 15 fixed observation stations and 2 mobile observation vehicles and kept maintaining it. We owned integration experience in different kinds of sensors, networks, computing and land constructions. Besides, GIS.FCU joins our government projects in SOA implementation for a long time. We develop service-oriented architecture (SOA) plan and leads the analysis, design and prototype implementation of SOA platform in National GIS (NGIS) by Ministry of the Interior (MOI), Taiwan. We absolutely understand SOA, web services and infrastructure construction, such as authentication and authorization, security very details. We did have deep understand and result for service conflation. We implement the prototype with proactive method, OGF enable GRID based on web services to serve the partial requirements about distribution computing. GIS.FCU is also a member of the Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc (OGC) since 2005, now GIS.FCU is the principal member of OGC. GIS.FCU is the participant of OWS-6, OWS-7 and OWS-8, and also participated in GEOSS AIP-3 from developing CFP to accomplishing the final result. 5
3.2 Personnel GIS.FCU proposes to contribute personnel to attend AIP-4. All of them will remain at Taiwan, but we will support their business travel if needed. Now we indicate the capabilities and experience of the personnel, role and responsibility in AIP-4 as follows: No. Personnel Information Role 1. Name: Lan-Kun (Peter) Chung Education: PhD.
