1 p reface EHR Matters! Welcome to the second edition of Integrated Electronic Health Records: An Online Course and Worktext for Greenway Medical Technologies PrimeSUITE! Electronic Health Records implementation in the United States is creating great opportunities for people who want to work in the health professions. From front office staff to nurses, doctors, and every worker in between, understanding how health information is transferred and how that information can improve the quality of healthcare is a valuable skill. Everyone working in a healthcare setting will be impacted by Electronic Health Records as they complete their daily tasks. Developed as a comprehensive learning resource, this handson course for Integrated Electronic Health Records is offered through McGraw-Hill s Connect Plus. Connect Plus uses the latest technology and learning techniques to better connect professors to their students, and students to the information and customized resources they need to master a subject. Integrated Electronic Health Records: A Worktext for Greenway Medical Technologies PrimeSUITE complements the online Connect Plus course, and is written by an author with an extensive Health Information Management/Health Information Technology background Beth Shanholtzer, MAEd, RHIA. New coauthor Danielle Mbadu brings a wealth of experience in the learning and assessment fields with her background in instructional design. Both the worktext and online course include coverage of Greenway Medical Technologies PrimeSUITE, an ONC-ATCB-Certified, fully integrated, online Electronic Health Records, Practice Management, and interoperable physician-based solution. The book is not meant to be an extensive user manual for PrimeSUITE, but rather it covers the key topics for Electronic Health Records, with Prime- SUITE as the vehicle to demonstrate those topics. Attention is paid to providing the why behind each task so that the reader can accumulate transferable skills. The coverage is focused on using an EHR program in a doctor s office, while providing additional information on how tasks might also be completed in a hospital setting. Electronic Health Records impact a variety of programs in the health professions; as such, this content will be relevant to Health Information Management, Health Information Technology, Medical Insurance, Billing & Coding, and Medical Assisting programs! To help you determine which exercises would most benefit your students, all exercises are designated with PM (Practice Management), EHR (Electronic Health Records), HIM (Health Information Management) tags, or some combination of those three. HIM EHR PM viii
2 Instructors can access a correlation of the worktext s Learning Outcomes to key accrediting bodies such as CAHIIM, ABHES, and CAAHEP both in the Instructor Resources under the Library tab in Connect and at the book s website, Here are the advantages you will gain using this Online Course and Worktext: The opportunity to work hands-on with simulated content of real software PrimeSUITE is a commercially-available program used in physician practices across the country by more than 13,000 providers, impacting more than 30 million patient charts. The course contains 55 simulated PrimeSUITE exercises in the areas of Practice Management, Electronic Health Records, and Health Information Management. Having the same content for each mode of an exercise (Demo, Practice, Test, and Assessment) gives the student an opportunity to master the tasks. Simulating the software means the students work can be assessed and the activities can be auto-graded by Connect Plus. Connect Plus is completely online no software to install! Easy implementation of this product into online, onground, and hybr id prog ra m s. New to the Second Edition In this second edition of IEHR, ICD-10-CM is the coding system used in exercises. ICD-9-CM is referenced as a legacy coding system. To enhance learning, the definitions of key terms are now found in the margin as well as in a glossary. New key terms have been added to several of the chapters. Each chapter ends with a new feature, Applying Your Skills, to give yet another opportunity for students to use what they have learned in each chapter. Ten additional PrimeSUITE exercises have been added as well. While content updates have been made to all of the chapters, here are the highlights: Chapter 2 In keeping with the expanding roles of health information professionals, new titles and certifications have been added to the listing of medical professions within healthcare in the second edition. Also, the Nationwide Health Information Network and National ehealth Collaborative are addressed. The end of chapter assessments have been expanded. Chapter 3 The second edition goes into more detail about integration of practice management and electronic health records systems including Clinical Documentation Architecture (CDA), Continuity of Care Documents (CCD), and Quality Reporting Document Architecture (QRDA). Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) are introduced in this chapter. An additional PrimeSUITE exercise has been added to this chapter as well. PREFACE ix
3 Chapter 4 The Applying Your Skills exercises for this chapter are additional PrimeSUITE exercises, which give students the opportunity to practice tasks they previously completed with different data. Chapter 5 In the second edition, the use of scribes for documentation has been expanded upon, and a new exercise related to maintenance of files has been added. Chapter 6 The second edition includes exercises based on ICD-10-CM with reference back to ICD-9-CM and includes two new exercises using PrimeSUITE. Chapter 9 The second edition includes the addition of Stage 2 Meaningful Use requirements. A PrimeSUITE exercise related to running a report that is used for internal purposes has been added. All are correlated to Learning Outcomes. PrimeSUITE Exercises include the following modes: Demo Mode watch a demonstration of the exercise (includes optional audio of the steps). Practice Mode try the exercise yourself with guidance (includes optional audio of the steps). Test Mode complete the exercise on your own. A s s e s s m e n t M o d e answer three to four conceptual questions about the exercise you just completed. Students receive a score from Connect Plus after completing each mode. They receive 100% for completing all steps in Demo Mode and again in Practice Mode. They receive a percentage based on how many steps they execute correctly in Test Mode or how many questions they answer correctly in Assessment Mode. For each PrimeSUITE Exercise, the same data is used for all of the modes in order to reinforce the skill being taught in that exercise. Each PrimeSUITE Exercise is labeled with: HIM (Health Information Management) PM (Practice Management) EHR (Electronic Health Records) Or some combination of the above three HIM PM EHR Much more information on how to complete the exercises in Connect or Connect Plus, can be found both in the Library tab in Connect and at A single sign-on with Connect and your Blackboard course: McGraw-Hill Higher Education and Blackboard Blackboard, the web-based course management system, has partnered with McGraw-Hill to better allow students and faculty to use online materials and activities to complement face-to-face teaching.
