3 SOUTHERN ARKANSAS UNIVERSITY, MAGNOLIA AND SOUTH ARKANSAS COMMUNITY COLLEGE TRANSFER STUDENT POLICIES AND PROCEDURES Admission of Transfer Students* Students who have attended other institutions of higher education are required to submit a formal application for admission and a transcript from each college attended. Students who have registered in any other college may not disregard the records in such institutions in making application. All transfer students should have their records evaluated before registering or accept the consequences of enrolling in duplicate courses or failing to enroll in required courses. Transcripts must be mailed from the institution(s) attended directly to the Admission's office at SAU Magnolia. Transfer Credit Students transferring from two-year collegiate institutions (including SAU Tech) may transfer a maximum of 68 semester hours to SAU Magnolia. Transfer students to the SAU Magnolia campus must also meet the residency requirement for the Magnolia campus. Remaining hours must be completed at an accredited senior institution. All transfer students must submit ACT or SAT scores for admission if they have not completed Composition I and College Algebra. All transfer work will be evaluated by the dean of the appropriate school and the Registrar's Office. Courses taken at a lower-division level which are offered at the upper-division level at SAU M cannot be accepted for degree credit unless validated satisfactorily [or unless otherwise stated in this agreement]. The validation procedure to be used for particular courses will be determined by the appropriate dean. Validation courses will be accepted at the level in which credit was earned. Upper-level credit is not awarded and in some majors additional upper-level hours will be required to meet the 40-hour requirement for upper level credit. Transfer students must be eligible to return to the institution they last attended to be eligible for admission to Southern Arkansas University. Transfer students who have attempted 0-14 semester credits must meet the admission standards for beginning students. If they have a cumulative GPA less than 1.00 their admission is subject to approval of the director of admissions. Transfer students who have attempted semester credits must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 1.5. Transfer students who have attempted 30 or more semester credits must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0. Transfer students must provide transcripts indicating the courses equivalent to Composition I and College Algebra have been successfully completed with grades of C or better or submit ACT scores for placement purposes. Applications from transfer students who do not meet the above requirements and have been out of college for at least one year will be reviewed by the director of admission for special consideration. Effective fall 1995, transfer courses from regionally accredited institutions are posted to the transcript, but

4 the GPA(s) of these institutions are not included in the calculation of the cumulative GPA. Effective fall 1995, only courses for which a grade of "C" or higher has been earned are accepted for transfer. Anyone transferring to SAU Magnolia to pursue courses leading to graduation will be required to earn at least 15 hours credit in the major and nine hours credit in the minor. In both instances, the work must be taken in residence. This regulation is binding even though the student has sufficient hours of credit to meet the requirements of the major and minor. CAAP Writing Skills + Essay All students pursuing a baccalaureate degree at SAU must demonstrate English proficiency as a graduation requirement by making a satisfactory score on a combination of the CAAP Writing Skills Test and an Essay Exam. Students enrolled at SAU during the semester in which they have hours will take the CAAP Writing Skills + Essay as a part of the state-mandated Rising Junior Examination. Students who transfer to SAU with 60 hours or more must have taken the CAAP Writing Skills + Essay by the end of their first full-length semester of enrollment. If students with 60 hours or more have taken the Rising Junior Examination prior to transferring to SAU, they may, with an official report of those scores sent directly to SAU's Counseling and Testing Center, transfer those scores. Those students will be required to take only the portion of the CAAP Writing Sills Test + Essay not previously taken and reported to SAU. Students with 60+ hours who have not taken the CAAP Writing Skills Test + Essay must contact the SAU Counseling and Testing Center to arrange to take the tests. The tests must be taken and all transfer reports filed during the student's first full-time semester of enrollment at SAU. Students who fail to take or fail to pass the CAAP Writing Skills + Essay at the appropriate time specified above must enroll in ENGL 1603, Review Composition, no later than the second full-length semester following the time they were required to take the test. They must remain enrolled in that class until they successfully complete it. Transfer Credit Policies may be modified. Degree and program requirements (catalog rights) for students who transfer from SACC to SAU under this agreement will be determined in the same manner as if their initial enrollment had been at SAU. For current policies, contact the Admissions Office at Residence Requirements The purpose of residency requirements at SAU Magnolia is to ensure that the majority of a student's major is taken at the degree-granting institution. This enables the degree-granting institution to ensure the academic integrity of the degree granted. In addition, the student can be assisted in career planning and job placement through the relationship developed with the instructors during the residency period. College Level Examination Program (CLEP), departmental credit by exams, military credits, and correspondence credits do not count as residence work at SAU Magnolia.

5 To earn a degree from SAU Magnolia, a student must complete a minimum of 30 semester hours in residence on the Magnolia campus or through SAU Magnolia extension. Twenty-four of the last 30 hours completed must be taken on the Magnolia campus or through SAU Magnolia extension. If the 30 hours requirement has already been met, a senior may take a maximum of 12 of the last 30 hours on the SAU Tech campus, provided the 68-hour transfer limit is not exceeded. Students who wish to receive credit toward graduation during their final semester or summer term by any method other than regular enrollment on the SAU Magnolia campus or through SAU Magnolia extension must obtain permission from their advisors, deans, and the registrar. The approval form may be obtained in the Registrar's Office. This must be filed by the appropriate deadline. Please consult the SAU catalog for deadline. Any necessary documents such as validation of courses, course substitutions, waiver of degree requirements, CLEP credit, credit by exam, correspondence credit, transfer credit, etc., must be completed and on file in the Registrar's Office prior to the beginning of the final semester or summer term. * Taken from the 2000 Southern Arkansas University, Magnolia General Catalog. Definition of Terms Elective Transfer = Course transferable for credit towards the total hours required for an Associate or Bachelor degree. (Not transferable as courses required in student's chosen program.) =Course listing lacks an academic equivalent for a SAU Magnolia course. Equal credit is granted for a more fundamental academic course equivalent as outlined in the document. Related Information Accrediting, licensure, or certifying agencies may prevent the University from accepting work from community colleges, which is indicated as upper division work at SAU.
