We have invited only the best programs in the nation to compete. The competition will be held in the Federal District Courthouse as well as the beautiful and historic Ninth Circuit Courthouse. Our competition is in its 6 th year, and in this short time, it has become well known for its excellence. Both the fact pattern and judging have been hailed as exemplars of what a competition should include. We are fortunate to attract dedicated federal and state court judges and highly experienced criminal defense attorneys and prosecutors in our state and federal courts here in San Francisco. Attached to this invitation are copies of CACJ s Forum s articles summarizing recent competitions. Since 1973, justice has been part of our organizational name, because Justice is our goal. From the initial membership of 60 lawyers, California Attorneys for Criminal Justice has grown to include thousands of members and is the country's largest statewide organization of criminal defense lawyers and allied professionals. The specific purposes of CACJ are: 1. To defend the rights of persons as guaranteed by the United States Constitution, the Constitution of the State of California and other applicable law; 2. To preserve due process and equal protection of the law for the benefit of all persons; to enhance the ability of its members to discharge their professional responsibilities through educational programs, publications and mutual assistance; and

2 3. To protect and foster the independence of the criminal defense lawyer and to improve the quality of the administration of criminal law. 4 CACJ S FOURTH ANNUAL MOOT COURT COMPETITION A HUGE SUCCESS From October 11-14, 2012, twentytwo teams of law students from schools throughout the country gathered in San Francisco to participate in the CACJ and Hastings Law School annual moot court competition. The competition involved the participants, their coaches and supporters, totaling over 300. It also required about one hundred volunteers who served as judges and scoring jurors, including sitting judges from both the state and federal bench, and lawyers from both prosecution o ces and the defense bar. This years problem included issues regarding eyewitness identi cation and expert witness testimony, as well as the issues that accompany a charged gang enhancement. Each team competed both Thursday and Friday, arguing both sides of the problem in the actual courtrooms of the United States Federal Courthouse. Then, on Saturday morning, based on the scores from Thursday and Friday, the top eight teams advanced to the quarter nals and from those rounds, the semi- nalists competed Saturday afternoon. It was really quite remarkable to see these students arguing the quarter and semi- nals in the magni cent courtrooms of the th Circuit Court of Appeals The final rounds were held on Sunday at UC Hastings and were judged by Federal District Court Judge William H. Alsup, Mendocino Superior Court Judge and CACJ past president Ann Moorman, and CACJ past president Ted Cassman. At the conclusion, Florida State University won the competition with By Linda Starr Southwestern Law School coming in second. Golden Gate University was third, while Fordham came in fourth. The George Porter Award, presented to the student who exhibited the best overall performance in the competition, was awarded to Adrian Mood of Florida State University College of Law. The caliber of the student performances was outstanding, prompting one federal district court judge to remark that the advocacy was of a quality that he hopes to see in his courtroom. CACJ and the student competitors are profoundly grateful for all the lawyers and judges who gave hours of their evenings and weekends to judge and score this competition. The students bene ted from feedback from this rich and Linda Starr, Legal Director, NCIP In 2001, Linda Starr co-founded Northern California Innocence Project (NCIP) and currently serves as the Legal Director. She received her J.D. from the University of Southern California Law Center and clerked for the California Court of Appeal upon graduation. She was an assistant district attorney in Brooklyn, New York, where she wrote and argued post-conviction matters before state and federal courts and was a supervisor in the Sex Crimes and Special Victims Unit. Ms. Starr worked as a sta attorney at the Sixth District Appellate Program in California and then privately represented indigent criminal defendants on appeal. talented pool of legal minds, making the experience unlike any other aspect of their legal education. 6 2013 NATIONAL CRIMINAL TRIAL ADVOCACY COMPETITION By Julie Traun This year the competition featured 24 law school teams from all around the country. Each team is comprised of four students who must prepare both a prosecution and defense team; each student performs the role of advocate and witness and following every round, the team must switch roles. Obviously, the work by the teams requires mastery of facts, strategy and law from the perspective of both defense and prosecution. It is a significant undertaking. The teams were paired randomly, having no idea how the opposing team might prepare. The level of preparation and skill exhibited by the student participants was impressive and the resulting competition was intense. More than 100 lawyers and judges volunteered their time to help preside over and/ or score the trials. In the nal trial, The onorable Maxine Chesney, United States District Court Judge, presided alongside The Honorable Harry Dorfman, San Francisco Superior Court Judge, and San Francisco ublic Defender Je Adachi.
