5 How to Choose a Spill Kit Choosing the right spill kit, for the right situation with the right absorbent capacity is an essential part of good spill management. use the list below to select the most appropriate kit for your application. How to choose a Spill Kit The most important aspect when choosing a spill kit is to ensure the kit is fit for your purpose. A Spill Kit that is right for the job will help company s minimise their risk and meet their duty of care obligations to their employees and the environment. Choosing spill kits that have adequate absorbent capacity and maintaining kits appropriately ensures minor spills don t turn into environmental disasters. What size or absorbent capacity of spill kit do I choose? Global Spill kits should be chosen to cope with the most likely spill event, not necessarily the total amount of liquid present. The kit should also have adequate absorbent capacity for the type and viscosity of the liquid present (eg gear oil absorbency will be approximately double than that of diesel). 31 How to Choose Absorbent Materials The day to day operations of companies involved in the transportation, storage and usage of oils, fuels and chemicals generate inevitable leaks, drips and spills. Global Absorbent Materials are an effective and cost efficient way of managing these day to day spills, preventing oil, fuel and chemicals from polluting soils and waterways. What type of absorbents are available? Global Absorbent Materials are designed, manufactured and colour coded for specific tasks and are available in a range of shapes, styles and sizes: How do I know which type of absorbent to use? For oil and fuel spills, use an Oil & Fuel only absorbent. These are selective for oil and fuels only and are colour coded white. For other liquids including coolant, degreaser or paint, the grey coded General Purpose absorbents would be more suited. For aggressive acids and alkalis choose from the pink Hazchem range. Why would I choose polypropylene absorbents? Polypropylene is super absorbent, lightweight, clean, safe and easy to handle. It is inexpensive, holds together well in arduous conditions, is fast acting and can be stored for long periods without effect. Disposal is via high temperature incineration or appropriate landfill. What if my spill is in the rain or around water? If you have an oil or fuel spill in the rain or around water then you need to choose a hydrophobic or water repellent absorbent. With most hydrocarbons floating on the water surface, the oil and fuel is easily absorbed and recovered. These are colour coded white. When would I use organic absorbents? The natural cotton materials used in Hisorb Organic Absorbents allow the used absorbents (if permitted) to be land farmed. Whilst organic absorbents have an extremely high absorbency rate, are light and clean to use, they do not compact or transport as well as polypropylene, and are slightly more expensive. Which absorbent should I use on a sealed or unsealed surface? For spills on concrete or bitumen surfaces, use polypropylene absorbents or any of the ground and floorsweep products. Oil & Fuel Spills that have soaked into soils are more difficult to absorb than if they were on a sealed surface. If free liquid exists, use polypropylene absorbents (eg pad or pillow) to soak up the puddles and apply a bioactive ground absorbent (eg Global Peat) to the remaining spill. 71 Bio-Remediation Liquids Spills on Water The bio-remediation of contaminated soil or water is often required as the final stage of spill clean-up. Rem-Activ Clean-up Treatment The naturally occurring process where soil or water is purified uses the enzymatic action of bacteria. This biological process requires time and the presence of a large number of naturally occurring (but scarce in nature) micro-organisms. These micro-organisms use organic materials as a source of energy and available nutrients for their growth, converting them to carbon dioxide and water. When left to nature, this process may take years. By controlling the number of micro-organisms and their environment (oxygen, ph, nutrient concentrations and moisture), the biological decomposition of hydrocarbons and other chemicals present in soil or water can be dramatically accelerated. Bio-Remediation Liquids are a blend of naturally occurring micro-organisms that have been selected for their ability to biologically remediate hydrocarbon contaminated soil and sludge as well as oily contaminated water. Bio-Remediation Liquids are supplied as concentrates which can be diluted with de-chlorinated water for spraying onto the contaminated area. The dilution rates and application rates vary depending on the type of surface and level of contamination. 72 Separation and Filtration Global s Filtration and Separation equipment uses simple and effective methods for the removal or recovery of oil from water. De-Oiling Hydrocyclone The treatment of oily wastewater has for many years been somewhat ineffectively dealt with by separation pits and enhanced gravity type separators. At the same time, the Oil & Gas industry were using expensive, high-tech hydrocyclone systems to achieve the same result. This technology is now economically available for a wide range of industrial, mining and automotive applications. Global Cycloforce Hydrocyclones are a cyclonic oil /water separation device that spins and separates oils, fuels and fats from the water stream at around 800 times the force of gravity. Applied in a variety of industrial applications, the CycloForce system represents state-of-the-art water clean up technology for tough oily water treatment applications. Units are custom built for your particular flow rate and duty. By connecting cyclone liners in parallel, flow rates of 1.8 m³/h up to 20 m³/h can be dealt with. Manufactured in AISI 316 stainless steel, CycloForce is a compact, low maintenance, simple and effective system with a small footprint. With separation occurring during the 2 3 seconds it takes for the water/oil mix to pass through the cyclone, clean water is achieved with no chemicals. CycloForce cyclones can be added on to existing oil water separation systems to enhance or improve the effluent quality. Micro Bubble Separator Wastewater generated from the washdown of cars, vehicles, trucks, buses and machinery often needs treating prior to disposal or re-use. The presence of chemical emulsifiers, suspended solids and dissolved organic material makes this wastewater stream difficult, if not impossible, to treat with conventional methods. Treatment of these and other difficult oily wastewater streams has traditionally been achieved through complicated and expensive Dissolved Air Flotation systems. Working in conjunction with local industry and research scientists, Global Spill Control have developed a new and innovative wastewater treatment system that utilises many aspects of dissolved air flotation but without the complexity and cost. A two stage chemical injection and mixing system conditions the wastewater through coagulation and flocculation with a specially formulated Oil Floc Primer and Oil Floc Finisher. Plant air is dissolved and mixed into the water under pressure creating millions of micro bubbles. The microbubbles are released at the bottom of an aeration tower, travelling upward through the tower whilst being directed to the central column via a series of inverted cones. The micro bubbles attach to the contaminants, lifting them to the surface where they exit the tower over a weir and to waste. The clean water flows out of the tower where it is injected with an organic sanitiser. Units can be supplied as packaged systems with all pumps, tanks, pipes, valves and controls or as discrete components to integrate with an existing wastewater plant for improved effluent quality. 73 Separation and Filtration The filtration and separation of oil contaminants, suspended solids and other contaminants from waste water not only helps companies comply with their environmental obligations and discharge requirements, but helps protect our waterways. Organic Filtration The Global Hisorb Organic Filter is an absorbent filter used for final polishing of low level oil contaminants (<100 mg/l) discharging from gravity plate separators, interceptor or API pits, settling ponds, dams and storage bunds prior to it being released to the environment. Hisorb filters provide security or peace of mind filtration for power stations, refineries, chemical plants and minesites where potentially contaminated cooling water or process water discharges into rivers, waterways or oceans. Filters are supplied with stainless steel or galvanised steel frames to suit large and small diameter outlet pipes, drains, flumes, etc. Multiple units can be installed staggered and overlapping. Hisorb Filters can be installed in outlets with a maximum velocity of 1.5 m/sec. They create minimal back pressure and can achieve effluent qualities of <10mg/L (depending on influent conditions). Each filter is custom made to suit the application and can be supplied with side rails to allow removal by crane or davit arm. Filter material is replaceable when fully saturated with oil. Customers can purchase Hisorb material to make their own filters. Hisorb is a biodegradable, organic cotton absorbent produced from a sustainable resource. It has exceptional oil/fuel absorbency and is able to recover up to 26 times its own weight in oil. Hisorb is highly water repellent (hydrophobic) with a fast wicking action that locks hydrocarbons into the organic fibre to rapidly soak up mineral oil, synthetic oil, vegetable oil, grease and fat. Used absorbents, being organic, can be land farmed if permitted. 76 Oil Containment Booms Global impervious booms are a non absorbent barrier designed to float and trap oil on the water surface. Floating Booms or Impervious Barriers that trap oil on the water surface are universally called Oil Containment Booms. They are generally manufactured from PVC or Urethane fabrics and are able to withstand the harsh conditions and elements typically found at an oil spill. 82 Silt Booms Silt Booms are ideal for use in dredging, excavation and piling operations or where machinery operates in and around water. Silt Booms trap and contain sediment and silt, preventing it from contaminating other parts of the waterway. Silt Boom Global Silt Booms are floating containment barriers with a foam or air buoyancy chamber supporting a deep permeable skirt. The skirt acts as a barrier to prevent the spread of silt, sediment and fine suspended solids whilst allowing water to pass through. Silt Booms are manufactured to suit individual requirements. Boom Storage and Deployment Reels The storage of Oil Containment Boom on reels protects the boom from physical damage or attack from vermin and allows fast deployment in the event of a spill. Fence, Air Curtain, Inflatable Fence and Tidal booms are best suited to storage on a reel. Reels allow booms to be deployed and returned quickly and efficiently, often by one or two personnel. Reels prevent boom damage as a result of dragging across wharves, rocks or other abrasive surfaces. Reels are manufactured individually to suit the type, size and length of boom. Choice of galvanised steel or stainless steel. Choose from power rewind using electric or diesel driven hydraulic power packs. 87 Disc Skimmers The Global Disc Skimmer is a floating skimmer with a series of rotating discs that remove floating oils and fuels from the ocean, ponds, sumps, pits, dams, rivers, harbours and marinas. Disc Skimmers The skimming principal works on the differences in specific gravity and the surface tension between oil and water, and where the oil has an affinity for attaching to the discs. Floating on the surface of relatively calm waters, the discs rotate and pass through the oil layer. The oil adheres to the discs (with minimal water pick up) and is removed with a scraper, draining into a sump before being pumped to suitable storage. Choose from 1.5m³/h to 15m³/h. Small skimmers are lightweight, compact with built in air motor ideal for emergency response trailers. Large skimmers have direct drive hydraulic motors driven via an electric or diesel operated power pack. Stainless steel or polyethylene discs with PTFE scrapers. Disc speed is adjustable a faster speed will pick up more oil (but also more water if little or no oil is present). Use self-priming suction type diaphragm pumps to transfer the skimmed oil to shore. 88 Brush & Drum Skimmers Global Brush and Drum Skimmers are a floating oil skimmer with either rotating drums or brushes for high volume recovery. Perfect for Spill Response Crews who can choose either drum or brush elements, depending on the nature of the oil to be skimmed. Interchangeable Element Skimmer Skimmer floats on the water and uses either a Brush element for viscous oils or dedicated Drum element for low viscosity oils. Elements are interchangeable via a quick release lever to suit a wide range of oil spill scenarios. Choose from polypropylene brush element for recovering viscous oils up to 12m³/h, or polyethylene drum element for low to medium viscosity oils up to 6m³/h. Rotational speed is adjustable (at the power pack) from 0 to100 RPM, allowing infinite adjustment to match the oil type and layer thickness. Removable hydraulic submersible pump (supplied as a module with integral float) transfers the skimmed oil to shore. A diesel driven hydraulic power pack (see pg 88) provides the hydraulic power for the skimmer and oil transfer pump. 89 Belt Skimmers The Global Belt Skimmer is a continuous belt type oil skimmer for removing oils and fuels from the surface of water. Global Belt Skimmer Belt type skimmers work on the differences in specific gravity and the surface tension between oil and water, and where the oil has an affinity for the belt. As the belt rotates, it passes through the oil/water interface where the oil adheres to the belt and is lifted upwards and scraped from the belt. The Global Belt Skimmer can be used for skimming lube oil, hydraulic oil, diesel or kerosene in industrial and mining sumps as well as edible oils, animal fats and hydrocarbons at refineries and petro-chemical plants. Recovery Barges are a quick and portable way to get a storage container to spill sites. Hydraulic Power Packs Starting at 5hp and extending to 100hp, Global Power Packs are designed and manufactured in-house, using the technical expertise of world leading manufacturers and robust, industry standard components. Manufacturing both the Power Pack and the Equipment it will be driving allows us to tailor make a system that not only works efficiently, but is just right for your application. Global Power Packs are an assembly of components and controls necessary to provide a hydraulic power supply to operate remote equipment such as booms, reels, skimmers and pumps. Power packs can be skid mounted or fitted with roll or safety cages. For mobile or portable applications, units can be trolley mounted to suit sealed or unsealed surfaces. Global Hydraulic Power Packs are manufactured in carbon steel, aluminium or stainless steel, using proprietary components and controls. Power Packs can be fully enclosed for weather protection and noise reduction. Standard power supply units are Yanmar or Lombardino diesel engines, Honda petrol engines or electric motors. All power packs feature speed control, allowing safe adjustment of the remotely operating equipment from the power pack location. Speed control also allows the operating and rotational speed of the equipment (eg. boom reel) to be infinitely adjustable, an important consideration that allows operators to tune the equipment. Recovery Barges Global Oil Spill Recovery Barges (OSRB) are floating storage containers used to store recovered oils and fuels from skimmers or working boats in harbours, marinas and open waters. 92 Oil Storage Tanks Emergency Oil Spill response often requires temporary storage of the recovered oil at the spill location. Global Collapsible Tanks are a quick and portable way to get a storage container to those spill sites. Collapsible Oil Recovery Tanks The Global Collapsible Oil Recovery Tank (C.O.R.T) is a self-supporting, selferecting recovery tank for storage of reclaimed liquids during a spill clean-up operation. Manufactured in a range of sizes from 1m³ to 20m³, CORT tanks are easy to store, highly versatile and resistant to a wide range of chemicals and oils. A floating ring or collar around the rim at the mouth of the tank floats up or down with the liquid level in the tank. Tank outlets are fitted with a ball valve drain and a one way inlet valve. Additional valving can be fitted if required. Tanks are manufactured from 900gsm PVC, chemical and abrasion resistant XR5 or 800gsm urethane. Carry handles are fitted around the perimeter for ease of positioning prior to filling. A lug on the inside of the base allows the tank to be hung up for cleaning or drying. 93 Dispersant Spray System Global Ausspray Oil Spill Dispersant Systems are spray systems used to minimise the environmental impact of oil spills on water. used on tugs, offshore supply vessels, workboats and other spill response craft dealing with emergency spills in a marine environment. Ausspray Dispersant Spray Systems Used on small vessels in still waters or large vessels operating in open sea and windy conditions, Global Dispersant Spray Systems are a compact, packaged system that accurately dispenses seawater-diluted dispersant using dedicated pumps, eliminating the need for troublesome eductors. The Ausspray Dispersant Spray Systems have been designed to meet the needs of Australian operators. They are simple to operate and constructed from the best marine grade materials and components. The Ausspray unit is quick and easy to setup and pack away. The system is powered by a Yanmar diesel engine which drives a self-priming, seawater supply pump and dedicated dispersant injector pump to achieve accurate and adjustable dispersant to seawater ratios of between 5% and 50%. Dedicated pumps provide huge system flexibility in readily adapting to a wide range of site conditions from large to small spills, different types of oil, oil layer thickness, oil SG, speed of the vessel and climatic conditions. Optional flow meters with digital readout allows simple and accurate calculation and adjustment of the seawater to dispersant ratio, an important consideration when using expensive dispersant chemical. The DSS7.5 and DSS10 are supplied with a hose and fittings pack comprising all necessary hoses, fittings, boom spray arms, dropper nozzles, king posts, rope stays and accessories to provide a complete working package. The dropper nozzles mounted off the boom arms directs the dispersant droplet to the oil for efficient break up. The DSS4L is supplied with four hand-operated lances to allow multiple operators to apply low volume dispersant for shoreline mop up or smaller spills around marinas, jetties and harbours. Rubbish Traps for Rivers The Global rubbish collection system has been designed to collect and contain rubbish and debris in tidal rivers and harbours. The unique system comprises floating deflection booms which are orientated into the flow to trap and direct floating rubbish to a central collection area for removal. The system allows most leaves and logs to pass while collecting floating rubbish, preventing it from flowing back out with changing tides, currents or wind. Sewage Socks For fast response to sewage spills, these socks collect solids from sewage collapses or overflow discharges. The socks fix securely over sewage outflow pipes and extend into the water body with buoys attached. Standard sock length is 20 metres with the diameter varying to suit the outflow pipe diameter. Global Oil Spill Boom Custom Design In mid 2011, a major international Oil & Gas company approached PPS to design and manufacture an oil absorbent boom for a new project off the north west coast of Western Australia. Working closely with the end user, we were able to come up with a design that met all the engineering requirements and ensured the company met their relevant environmental compliance requirements. Using standard Global SBW absorbent boom with internal floats, 4km of absorbent boom was manufactured in fully assembled 100m sections that all linked together with stainless steel clips and an overlap to prevent bypass. Each 100m section had an integral tow rope and additional floats at each end. This allowed simple replacement if required and the ability to rapidly deploy by towing to the spill location with a standard vessel.
