9 By the numbers In the United States, there are over 13,000 certified nurse midwives and 82% have advanced degrees (Masters) Nationally 8% of births attended by midwife At Mercy hospital 25% are attended by midwife 95.2% of all births attended by a midwife happen in hospitals While may women identify with midwives as delivering babies, most midwives care for women through out their entire lives What services do Midwives provide? 12 What are different kinds of midwives? Certified Nurse Midwives MERCY TEAM Registered nurses with graduate degree in Midwifery University degree with hands on clinical Licensed and registered in NYS and can prescribe Certified Midwives Individuals who have a bachelor s degree in something other than nursing with a graduate level degree from a midwifery education program. Able to prescribe medications What are different kinds of midwives? Certified Professional Midwives Previously called lay midwives Apprenticeship for learning how to care for women outside of the hospital No formal educational requirements Are not able to prescribe medications 12

13 Care by Midwives in the Hospital Education and Advocacy Midwives focus on empowering women with knowledge and they are present with their patients Holistic Care Caring for the entire woman, partner and her family Pain Management Yes! We support epidurals! However CNMs also focus on relaxation, positioning and movement to help relieve pain during labor IV medications are always an option 13

14 Midwifery Care: Covered by Insurance? Yes! Midwifery care is covered by all major insurances including Medicaid! You can pick a midwife for your well women care In general women are more likely to have a vaginal birth with the support of a midwife and less pain medication Midwifery may be less expensive care Midwives first assist at c-sections (if you need one) as your safety is our #1 priority 14

16 Your Pregnancy and Birth Experience Many women say: What they want out of their care during pregnancy and childbirth is not necessarily what they are receiving Women feel they are not well informed about the effect that commonly used medical procedures can have on their body and how it impacts the health of their baby Midwives favor less intervention in birth experience and more education 16
