4 CHAPTER 1: THE WILD, WILD WEB The Internet has changed the way we view reputations. Today, you can conduct an online search on any of your friends and immediately find out what they did last weekend and whom they did it with. You can find photos, videos and much more from the comfort and secrecy of your own home. Not only can you do this with friends, but you can do it with businesses too. Want to find a great Chinese food place? Do a quick search on Yelp.com or Yellowpages.com and within seconds you will have pages of results. These results will all have reviews posted by current or former customers, and within seconds you can form an opinion about a business that you may have never even heard of, except for what you are learning about at that moment online. While this advance in technology has allowed us to connect on a level never before possible, it has also brought with it a laundry list of negatives. The problem isn't necessarily the technology itself, but rather the speed with which the information it yields enters our lives. The Internet has turned into the American Wild West of old. The expansion of the Internet is outrunning and outgunning law enforcement, social norms and even everyday ethics. Anybody with an Internet connection and a keyboard can say anything they want to, about whomever they want to all while typically avoiding any type of accountability, repercussions, or in some cases, deserved criminal punishment. Imagine a world where it was possible for a major corporation to send a single to YouTube forcing them to remove 50,000 videos due to copyright infringement. However, if someone were to post a scandalous video of you or your family, you would likely have no legal power to remove it. Seems like an unfair and lopsided world, doesn't it? Welcome to the current Internet age that we live in. Hackers, angry customers, competitors, ex-spouses and other malicious types are all able to take advantage of the loopholes in legal protection and have their say, no matter how bad it might be. Meanwhile, businesses and everyday people alike are being take advantage of from fraudulent, slanderous and sometimes violent communications on the web. Unfortunately, the law has lagged behind the expansion of the Internet. Just like those pioneer towns of the American Wild West, we as Internet users must find a way, to keep our businesses, reputation and livelihoods safe from others. 5 CHAPTER 2: WHAT IS REPUTATION MANAGEMENT? Online Reputation Management is so much more than what the title suggests. Reputation managers will monitor any communications that might be happening about a particular brand. If they notice something negative that requires attention, they will apply their broad and vast knowledge of Internet marketing techniques to ensure that the problem is fixed. You could think of reputation managers as part customer service rep and part online marketer. The goal of reputation management is not to squelch the honest feedback of customers, but to ensure that damages resulting from negative falsities are minimized and that the company is being accurately represented online. These negative online implications can come easier than you might think. For instance, anybody can start a blog. There are literally hundreds of free blogging platforms that people can use. If an ex-employee or a competitor wanted to start a blog that was meant to spread lies about your business or even about you personally, they could do it.
