4 Message from Executive Director This presents the activities and programs that the organization accomplished during the reporting year. Likewise other years, this year has been marked by several achievements and success that I will look back on for years to come. CSS has had a year of positive change and success passing through various multidimensional challenges. The aftereffect of global economic recession has badly aggravated the livelihood options of the people and has been appeared as an obstacle for accelerating the process of sustainable development. But CSS has been able to carryout its activities with success without any major setbacks. The issue of self sufficiency with regard to Health Sector has been a long concern for CSS. In this year, we are able to reach almost the breakeven point for our hospital and we are progressing towards achieving the long coveted self sufficiency. The Hope Polytechnic Institute of Education Sector has already been able to achieve its organizational self-sufficiency within two years of its journey since It is now regarded as one of the best polytechnic institutes in Khulna, Bangladesh and offers technical education to 144 students every year. Through Economic Development Sector CSS is able to touch the lives of poor people. Presently, we have 112 branch offices around the country and at the end of this year the total number of beneficiary of this Sector is 165,254. In Special Development Sector, the "Empowering Women; Improving Country (EWIC)" project has come out as a great success and we are able to help the rural poor women by providing them with different life skill trainings and involving them in Income Generating Activities (IGA). CSS has successfully completed four decades of its journey this year. I am grateful to God for His continuous blessings upon us and thank Him for giving us this opportunity to serve the suffering humanity. I ask for His blessings for the future as I do for the present. For all of our success I must convey my most sincere thanks to Government of Bangladesh and the NGO Affairs Bureau for their support. 11 Health Sector 'Health' is the basis to establish any development segments. In the countries like Bangladesh, the underprivileged communities are not getting optimum health service due to limited access, lack of quality and unaffordability. They are facing obstacles to enroll themselves to the mainstream development process. To overcome the barriers for poor and neglected people especially in rural and remote areas, CSS has setup its Health Sector for providing affordable & sustainable health services to the underprivileged communities. Since last two decades this Sector has been serving rural areas of southwest region of Bangladesh. Under this Sector, preventive community awareness, grassroots level advocacy as well as technical skill course (nurse) are provided along with service delivery. This Sector encompasses five projects; Rev. Abdul Wadud Memorial Hospital, Nursing School, Affordable and Sustainable Healthcare for the Vulnerable People (ASHCVP), HIV/AIDS Prevention and Commercial Sex Workers Rehabilitation Program. Beside that CSS is also associated with two advocacy platforms: BOOM Platform and Health Alliance Bangladesh (HAB). 01

12 Rev. Abdul Wadud Memorial Hospital The 200 bed hospital is the central wing of CSS Health Sector. It is situated in the outskirts of the Khulna city at Tilok, Rupsha. Hospital is providing comprehensive medical services to the rural and disadvantaged people of the southern regions of Bangladesh. Besides, the people all around the country come here for different medical services offered by the hospital. The location of this hospital makes it easily accessible for the people of all classes as the hospital is directly linked with the Number of Patients Served Khulna city through the Rupsha bridge. The Unit Out-door In-door Camp hospital through General, Eye, Mother & Child, Dental, ENT, X-ray, Pathology & Ultrasonography Eye Patient section offers a multidisciplinary services to the MCU & General people in affordable cost. Besides, the hospital also arranges health camps in remote rural areas Dental around the year with a view to providing its ENT services to the doorsteps of the people in the hard to reach areas. In this year, in total 72,096 people Total are supported by CSS Hospital. The Poor Fund of the hospital has added a new value to its services. The rural people of the southern part of Bangladesh are so poor that they are unable to afford the cost for basic health services. Under this scheme these hardcore poor people are getting the medical service in a discount or even free of cost. Every year almost 5% of total running cost of the hospital is allocated for this scheme. In 2012, a total number of 729 patients is supported by the Poor Fund. 02

13 Nursing School CSS Nursing School situated within the hospital complex, is committed to train up nurses of international standard. It is a registered nursing institute under the Bangladesh Nursing Council. Providing quality health care for rural community has been emerged as a major challenge for developing countries like Bangladesh due to the unavailability of health professionals in this sector. Considering this, CSS took initiative for nursing school as an institutional form to meet the growing demand for technical professionals in health sector. The Nursing School is a response to the need for nurses in CSS hospital as well as other Goct. & private hospital. The students are greatly privileged as they are getting job opportunity in the hospital after their graduation. The poor students of the rural areas are given the priority in the admission process of this school. So far, 27 nurses got training from here. This year, 8 (eight) students graduated after completing their internship and joined at the CSS hospital. 03

14 Twin Blessings In the family of Mira, there were eleven persons and her father was the only earning member resulting in a very below level livelihood status of their family in the society. Due to that Mira got married at her early age to reduce the burden from her father. She is from Gilatola village Banshtoli Union, Rampal Upazila. Her husband Mohammad Ibrahim Hossain is a van puller; he is also the only earning member to maintain the family with nine members and the economical status of her father's family and husband's family were almost same. She became pregnant at the age of twenty years and was suffering from malnutrition. Due to unaffordability and lack of awareness, she was not taken to any health care center for routine checkup. Suddenly on 29 August 2012 she came to a severe condition with her pregnancy and brought to Rev. Abdul Wadud Memorial Hospital. Her husband was totally helpless as well as unable to bear the expenses for caesarean section. So, he was supported from Poor Fund. The caesarean section was conducted successfully and she gave birth of twin babies with sound health. She was released from the hospital on 4 September, Both Mira and her husband were grateful to God for their twin babies. 04

15 Affordable and Sustainable Healthcare for Vulnerable People (ASHCVP) This project is co-funded by European Union, Tearfund and Prisma, which is being implemented in 20 selected areas within 3 divisions of Bangladesh (Khulna, Barisal and Dhaka). Through 20 Rural Health Centers (RHC), total people in the project areas are being served by health care especially to women (15-49 years) and child (0-5 years). The specific objective is "Affordable and sustainable rural healthcare for vulnerable people". The overall objective of the action is "Improved Health Status of population of Khulna, Barisal & Dhaka division in Bangladesh as reflected by reduced child mortality (MDG 4), improved maternal health (MDG 5), and the spread of HIV/AIDS and incidence of malaria and other diseases halted and initially reversed (MDG 6)." In every rural heath center, there is a Sub- Assistant Community Medical Officer (SACMO), a diploma nurse, a Pathology technician and a pharmacist. There are also two doctors for the quality assurance of the service. This project provides both curative and preventive services to the poor people through different activities. Under this program, a community support system has been developed for the effective management of these clinics. To attain maximum effectiveness of the health facilities and to ensure sustainability, local communities are involved in the management of the Rural Health Centers. The mechanism of the program is designed in a way that after its project period, these clinics will be managed by the community efficiently. 16 Sound Health Rupa, a twenty years old housewife, was visited by the Community Health Worker (CHW) at Ghatbila village, Mollahat Upazila, Bagerhat district. She was pregnant for four mouths and was ignorant about the antenatal and postnatal care. Her husband and mother-in-law were strictly unwilling for receiving any kind of antenatal services from community clinics due to superstition. So, Rupa didn't receive any service or checkup from RHC. Her mother-in-law told that she had delivered 8 children without any clinical services; so she asked why it was necessary for Rupa. Community Health Worker (CHW) listened her carefully and discussed the matter with Community Health Educator (CHE) Anindita Biswas and Aid nurse Salma Begum. Then, they went together to Rupa's house to make them aware of pregnancy complications, usefulness and the advantages of routine antenatal checkup. After that, Rupa and her mother-in-law visited RHC and received consultation in a conducive environment. Nurse motivated them and showed them the labor room & hygiene status. The mother-in-law was satisfied that she came along with Rupa to the RHC for delivery service. As a result August 25, 2012 Rupa had a normal delivery and her newborn baby is now safe and sound in the lap of her mother. 06

17 HIV/AIDS Prevention and Rehabilitation program HIV/AIDS Prevention Program is mainly an awareness base program which imparts health education to its target population regarding healthy life style, the basics of HIV/AIDS prevention. Besides, it also provides curative medical services for the Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD). At present, under this program CSS has operated 6 Drop-In-Center (DIC) at different locations. Besides, various out reach programs, awareness campaigns and activities are conducted under the project. The target people of CSS HIV/AIDS Prevention Program is: brothel base sex workers, the floating sex workers and their clients, transport workers including their family members also. In 2012, 38,593 people were reached with preventive messages and 7,492 people get curative services from the DICs. Rehabilitation Program is an extension of HIV/AIDS Prevention Program which focuses on the rehabilitation of the brothel base Commercial Sex Workers (CSW). Based on their vulnerability context and humanitarian ground, CSS started this project since The main objective of this project is to redecorate the life of CSWs and reintegrate them through mainsteaming in the society. The project takes the CSWs out of the brothel and provides them with different skill development training in a rehabilitation center. Upon the completion of the skill development trainings, they are provided with the job support in CSS or linked with other organizations. They are also given land and house to be rehabilitated in the community. The project is able to rehabilitate two batches of women so far. The 22 rehabilitated women of the first batch are now working in different projects of CSS. The second batch also completed their residential trainings and engaged in different income generating activities. Under this project, 10 (Ten) rehabilitated women of the first batch got land and houses this year. CSS continues monitoring and supervision of these women in the society for their proper re-integration to the community. 07

18 Home; Sweet Home I am Sarifa Akter from Chakra Dashamurhat, Naogan. Our family economic status was badly poor as my father was the only earning member to maintain a big family of 18 members. My father was a religious leader (Imam) at the local Mosque. He earned a little amount of money and it was hardly possible for him to maintain our family. I have sixteen brothers and most of them were suffering from malnutrition. We hardly were taken to the doctor for treatment but were treated through superstition & quack doctors. Eight of my brothers were died due to lack of treatment. My husband married me for the dowry of 90,000 taka when I was only 12 years old. My family had no other way but to get me married to a comparatively old man to lessen the burden of dowry. After 5 years, my husband divorced me to get re-married for another dowry. Then, I was helpless and some of my sisters brought me to the city by giving hope for a better life but they sold me to a brothel for 40,000 taka. I had passed a miserable life in brothel almost two years and then I came to know about CSS rehabilitation program. I used to meet the person of that program and realized that it would be better for me. So, I took the opportunity and I learnt different skill training and got all other support to revive my mental condition to be resettled in the community. CSS provided me land where I built my own house and now I am living happily with my husband, daughter and others. I am working in CSS as a peer educator. This job has given me a good social identity. I am grateful to God for giving the chance to change my life. 08

19 Health Monitoring and Advocacy on Safe Motherhood CSS is an active partner of a national level advocacy platform namely BOOM with the goal to simulate the government on the issue of safe motherhood. The BOOM platform is formed with the partnerships between 4 Dutch and 5 Bangladeshi NGOs. CSS along with four NGOs are carrying out an advocacy program "Health Monitoring and Advocacy on Safe Motherhood" in the different parts of the country. The focus of the program is to well functioning Upazilla Praishad Health Standing Committee (UPHSC) for ensuring safe motherhood and improve the performances of the public and private service providers. CSS has been implementing this program in Lakhpur Upazilla under this platform. This program also conducts monitoring of public and private health service providers on the sub-district level forming local Community Base Organization (CBO) with a view to facilitating its advocacy initiative. 09

20 Health Alliance Bangladesh Health Alliance Bangladesh (HAB) is national level alliance consisting of four national NGOs namely CSS (Christian Service Society), CDD (Center For Disability in Development), Child Sight Foundation (CSF), TLMB (The Leprosy Mission Bangladesh), and 4 datch NGOs Woord en Daad, Dark en Light, TLM-NL (The Leprosy Mission Netherland). HAB functions as a platform for thse partners strengthening their capacity. Partners are learning from each other and utilize each other's potentials and skills. HAB is also strong in Lobby and Advocacy and it organizes annual learning workshop, exposure visits for receiving input in monitoring, evaluation and reporting among the partners and also shares the lessons learned. HAB has arranged different trainings and orientation sessions under this national platform where partners exchange knowledge, experiences, best practices and skills. In 2012, the partner organizations reached their target in curative and preventative services, children with disabilities received medical services and leprosy health care services were provided to people with lepra. On Policy Influencing, this Alliance works towards the inclusion for PWD (People with Disablities) and to reduce stigma for PWD and PWLepra through lobby and advocay. HAB has contributed to the partners for adding values towards their advocacy and policy influencing interventions. 10

21 Education Sector Education is a basic form of human capital development and essential for improving productivity through fostering economic growth. It is no exaggeration to say that education and development are interlinked. CSS acknowledges this fact and always believes in the empowerment of the people of all sections regardless of race, religion or ideology through proper education. CSS Education Sector is for the most neglected and disadvantaged people of the community and operates various types of education programs including non-formal, formal and technical education. This sector comprises of Home of Blessings (orphanages program), Community Base Education Support Program, Leadership Training Program, Rev. Paul's High School, Hope Technical & Polytechnic Institute, Job and Business Service and Non-formal Primary Schools around the country. 11

22 Home of Blessings CSS has been operating four Home of Blessings in Khulna, Batiaghata, Dacope & Gazipur where near about 1600 orphan children are brought up with parental love and care. The orphans are the most neglected in our society and they are mostly deprived of the basic rights of food, clothing, proper environment, education and health. The Home of Blessings brings those children and provides them all the basic needs with a view to ensuring a better life. The history of Home of Blessings dates back to 1981 when the CSS founder, Rev. Paul Munshi started a hostel program in Khulna. Now Home of Blessings is serving the children from more than 35 districts through out the country. These Homes have well built infrastructure where the children are growing up under the supervision of dedicated staffs. 23 New Life At the age of three and half years I, Nandita Fini, came to know that Mr. Mcline Fini and Ms. Putul Fini whom I used to call as father and mother, are not my real parents. I was thrown into garbage just after my birth. The childless Fini couple found me and took care of me as their own child. One night my foster mother was injured by fire of a kerosene lamp which was kept just beside her bed. She died after the treatment of three days. That was another crucial period of my life as my foster father got married again. Slowly life started becoming difficult for me to sustain in the family as the second wife of Mr. Fini gave birth of two children. Even it was also economically difficult for Mr. Fini as he earned a very small amount by working as a cook. That is the reason, I did not get the chance to go to school as well. In 2011, my foster father admitted me to the Home of Blessings at Gallamari. This has opened up a new era for me to dream a better future and to grow in a helpful environment with mental and physical soundness. Along with that, spiritual lesson is enriching my moral values to be a responsible citizen. My aim is to be a police officer in the future to serve the suffering humanity. I am thankful to CSS for all support they are enabling for the children like me. 13

24 Community Base Education Support program Community Base Education Support Program (CBESP) is another phase of CSS sponsorship program beside Home of Blessings. The project is originated from the view of Family Approach to support the orphan and helpless children. Among the children of Home of Blessings, the boys have been shifted to the community under this program. These children are now living with their families and getting the opportunity to grow up in a family environment. Through this program, the parents are becoming responsible for every care of their own children. It also creates opportunity for the community people to nurture their children with parental love and care. The support of food, education, clothing, medical care etc. are provided by the program with the help of local churches. At present, there are 528 children who are being supported through CBESP. The children are also attached to different local churches for their spiritual education. The program conducts close monitoring of the progress of all activities through routine visits forming local CBOs. 14

25 Leadership Training Program Leadership Training Program (LTP) is an initiative of CSS to meet the shortage of community leadership in the Christian society of Bangladesh. This program is designed to bring out the best for tomorrow's leaders. It helps the poor, needy and meritorious young Christian girls and boys with formal and spiritual education and gives them the opportunity to become the true children of God for serving His kingdom. LTP is the chain program of HoB and CBESP. After the completion of secondary education in HoB and CBESP, the students of higher education are enrolled in this program. LTP also helps other meritorious students alongside HoB students. Under this program the students get financial assistance in the form of stipend for their educational expense. Besides, two seminars are held every year with the participation of all students for their spiritual and moral trainings. Local cell group gatherings are organized in different areas of the country to guide and monitor these students locally. In the year 2012, a total number of 400 students are assisted by the program. 26 Hope Technical Institute Because of extreme poverty, poor people in the community can not afford formal education let alone any skill development trainings for their livings. As a result, they pass their life in the vicious cycle of poverty. Technical and vocational education can be effective solution in this regard. Hope Technical Institute (HTI) is for these poor people who are still unemployed and unskilled. It is situated adjacent to Home of Blessings of Khulna and started its journey from The HTI is open for the graduate students of Home of Blessings as well as the students from outside. 27 Hope Polytechnic Institute Considering the huge demand for higher education in technical sector, Hope Polytechnic institute has been established in This is a Government registered polytechnic institute which offers 4 years diploma courses on Civil, Electrical and Mechanical trades. This institute has the capacity to accommodate 144 students a year. This institute has created extented opportunity for technical students of HTI if any student wants to build a career though obtaining higher technical education. This is also an income generating intervention of CSS which helps to achieve organizational self sufficiency in the coming days. 28 Job and Business Service Unemployment is a burning problem for the highly populated developing country like Bangladesh. The graduates are facing barriers to get themselves involved in any profession or with different organizations as well as corporate. Besides, it is also difficult for a youth to be an entrepreneur due to lack of access to financial capital and skills. Considering these challenge, CSS has started up this Job and Business Service (JBS) for the graduates of Hope Technical Institute (HTI) and Leadership Training Program (LTP) to link up with job or facilitate them to be entrepreneur. This service is a unique addition to Education Sector for following-up the students even after the study for their better future. The aim of JBS is to act as the meditation of these people in finding jobs or coaching them. JBS contacted with different job providers and organizations. The graduates are linked with those organizations through Job attachment/apprenticeship. It also provides job related trainings for the graduates for making them competent in the job market and helps them to get financial help for entrepreneurship development. 29 Rev. Pauls High School CSS has been operating a high school adjacent to the Home of Blessings of Khulna with a view to providing formal education to the poor. The school was established in 1981 by CSS founder, Rev. Paul Munshi and was named after him. It is a Government registered school which is open for all in the community. The school has class 1 to 10 and provides teaching as per Government prescribed curriculum. The school also comes to great help for the students of Home of Blessings, Khulna as they need not go far for formal education. The school has a reputation for providing quality education as it always remains in the top ten ranking of schools in khulna for its performances. A total number of 1011 students are reading in this schools. There are 37 staffs in the school; among them 30 are teachers and others 07 are management staff. 30 Hope Non-formal Pre-primary Schools Hope Non-formal Pre-primary School (HNFPS) is the unique segment of CSS Education Sector. These schools are operated by CSS Micro Credit Program (MCP) under Economic Development Sector. These schools are located at 31 different places in the working areas of Micro Credit. The target group of these schools are the children of CSS MCP beneficiaries. The rural poor women are supported by the Micro Credit Program and their children schooling is ensured by these schools. These schools are unique in the sense that the operating cost of the schools is covered from the service charges of the loans laken by the women. The HNFP schools are acting as a bridge between the students and the formal education. These schools link the children with formal education and follow-up them to formal primary education. Besides, these schools also conducts awareness session for the mothers where they are imparted knowledge about hygiene, healthy living style, children education etc. In this year, 907 students get education from these 31 HNFP schools. 20

31 Economic Development Sector Developed economy is the precondition for a nation to get access to other livelihood components. Attaining optimum level of basic needs & rights becomes challenging without a certain stage of stable economic status. But Bangladesh still faces the challenge of achieving accelerated economic growth and alleviating the massive poverty that afflicts nearly two-fifths of its 150 million population. A huge chunk of population is jobless and deprived of basic necessities. Another important cause of poverty is the deterioration of the natural environment resulting in shortages of food, clean water, materials for shelter, and other essential resources. The main focus of CSS Economic Development Sector (EDS) is to build a nation free from the shackle of poverty. It is helping the poor to uplift their economical and social status. EDS offers a complete package for the people having a range of services i.e. Micro Credit Program, Small and Medium Enterprise Development, Water Project, CSS Ava Center and Fisheries Project. 21

32 Micro Credit Program The History of Economic Development Sector began with the journey of Micro Credit Program (MCP) in At that time Micro Credit Program was launched in southern part of the country for bringing hope to lives of the poverty stricken people who had been badly affected by the Liberation War in Now, CSS is working all over the country operating 112 MCP branches in 21 districts of 4 divisions. Under this program, CSS provides small credits to the rural poor women on easy terms and conditions. The aim of the program is to help them in developing their socio-economic status through achieving self-sufficiency. Besides giving loans it also provides regular motivational trainings for the beneficiaries regarding proper utilization of loan money. It also shares knowledge of healthy living style, sanitation and hygiene, HIV/AIDS, children's education through group counseling. The program has a wide range of loan facilities that includes general loan, business loan, seasonal loan on agriculture and fisheries, interest free loan etc. This year, there are 863 staffs working in this program. 33 Life Change I am Juthika Rani Karmaker, wife of Ganesh Chandra Karmaker, living at Tetultala, Bagmara. My husband died six years ago of heart attack. At that time, I along with my son was totally helpless even to survive from hand to mouth. I came to know about the micro-credit loan facilities of CSS from Nirala-1 branch. In December 2007, I took a loan of 7000 taka. With that amount, I received the training on tailoring and purchased a sewing machine. Though it was difficult, I was able to repay the loan installment timely. For the second time, I took taka loan and with that I scaled up my tailoring business. Like this way I continue my business with the support of microcredit program of CSS. Presently, I have taken a loan of 30,000 taka from CSS. Day by day, my livelihood situation is getting better and even after the death of my husband; I am able to continue the study of my son. He is now sixteen years old and studying polytechnical engineering. My dream is to provide all necessary support for my son to be established in the society. Without the support of CSS I could not come to my present position. In future I want to buy some sewing machines to scale up my business and for that I pray to God that He may fulfill my dreams. 23

34 Small and Medium Enterprise Development (SMED) Small and Medium Enterprise Development initiative is a bigger picture of Micro Credit Program. It provides loan to those MCP clients who are able to upgrade their status and establish themselves as successful businessmen. The main objective of this project is twofold i.e. Poverty alleviation through enterprise development and Job creation for unemployed people of the country. Besides, giving loans, the program provides the clients with business development services. This initiative is able to create a positive impact in the lives of the beneficiaries. SMED is divided into three segments; SMED (Large), SMED (Small) and Water Bangladesh. SMED (Small) loan is small scale loan facility which is given to new businessmen with limited capital. In 2012, in total 459 SMED (Small) loans are disbursed and at the end of the year the total outstanding active clients are 688. SMED (Large) loans are provided to those people who have an established business in the market and want to expand the business more. Up to this year, 75 entrepreneurs are supported by SMED (Large) initiative under this project. Water Bangladesh is a unique phase of SMED. Under this project, water purification plants are provided as loans to those entrepreneurs who are willing to establish enterprises through water plant venture. The entrepreneurs sell water in a nomimal price and repay the loan gradually. There are 20 water plants established with the support of this project. Long term technical and management support are provided to these clients by CSS. The southwest part of the Bangladesh has been suffering a lot because of shortage of pure drinking water. Through this Water Bangladesh project, CSS is trying to help these suffering people by establishing safe drinking water resources besides new enterprise development. 24

35 Fisheries Project Fisheries Project of CSS is located in the rural surroundings of Batiaghata and Dacope beside the river Poshur. This Project has 25 ponds on acres of land and the fish cultivation is done here following the scientific methods and techniques. Through this project CSS is able to create many jobs for rural people. It also meets the nutritional demand of the people in the locality. This fisheries project also set itself as a role model in the local community. Many people are inspired to do same kind of farm seeing the success of this project. Fisheries Project is another income generating intervention of CSS and from this project, in 2012 CSS is able to produce 318 metric ton of fishes and earns BDT. 26,738,689 by selling those fish in the market. 25

36 CSS Ava Center The issue of organizational sustainability has been a long concern of CSS. For this purpose, CSS starts some income generating activities beside the service oriented projects. Though the goal of these projects is income generation, they are also persuaded by the humanitarian values and ideologies. CSS Ava Center is one of such endeavor. It is the biggest conference and resource center in the Khulna District. The target customers are other NGOs and likeminded organizations. Different NGOs have to organize trainings, seminars, workshop for their staff from time to time. But because of the shortage of the training centers and suitable facilities, they face a lot of hazard. CSS Ava Center is now able to meet this type of clients of Khulna as well as the whole country. CSS previously operated Ava Conference Center (ACC) with limited facilities and resources. Present CSS Ava Center is the extended phase of ACC. This center is named after Ms. Ava Munshi; the wife of CSS founder Rev. Paul Munshi. It is a five storied "U" shaped building with spacious entrance of granite marble staircase in the frontier. All the inner sides of the entrance are splendidly decorated with mural pictures of terracotta ceramic. Most of the rooms are air conditioned, well decorated and equipped with necessary amenities. This center is able to earn good reputation for its services and infrastructure. This center has almost 100% occupancy though out the year and in total, 799 organizations get services from here. 26

37 Special Development Sector Sustainable development depends on multi-sectoral and socio environmental conditions. Through minimizing the gaps in knowledge, awareness and accessibility to basic services, it is possible for a particular community to emerge in the mainstream development process. Beside that, external environment and natural disaster is a burning issue to be kept under consideration for a holistic sustainable community development. For achieving desired level of development, sometimes CSS needs to carry out some activities in response to some special needs of the community. These interventions are need base and incidental. CSS Special Development Sector (SDS) is comprised of Disaster Management and Emergency Relief cell, Empowering Women Project and Organizational Development Project. 27

38 Empowering women; Improving Country Rural women in our country are in backward condition economically, socially and politically as they are usually not associated with any income generating activities due to several constraints like lack of literacy, lack of business skill, dependency on male, social customs etc. Access to any credit system was limited for the women in the past because of their lack of resource endowment. However, credit sourcing is no longer difficult for the rural women because of several GO and NGO interventions. Getting capital is not all because they also need to know how to utilize the capital and extract the maximum benefit out of it. Considering this social need, CSS has been launching a skill development project "Empowering Women; Improving Country" since 2011 for rural women who are still out of development process. Under this project these women are provided with different life skill trainings and afterwards attached to different Micro Finance Institutes for credit facilities. This project takes care of them in starting up their own businesses. Every year 1000 rural women are supported under this project and so far the project is able to help 2000 women. 39 New Dream I am Sangeeta Paal, wife of Mihir Paal, Safolidanga village, Kashiani Upazilla, Gopalgonj district. My husband runs a medical pharmacy in our locality. From there, not enough income was possible to earn for sustaining the family's livelihood. Being an educated woman, I was always thinking of contributing to family economy but was unable to find out any possible option. It was also difficult for a housewife like me to stay outside the house for longer time and that is why I was thinking of doing some kind of income generating activity at home along side other household work. I had no experience or training. So it was difficult for me to come out with any particular idea. I was informed about the loan program of CSS and went to the office to discuss about this. After knowing my requirement, loan officer suggested me for Empowering Women; Improving Country program where I would be able to get some capacity building training for entrepreneurship development. Then I took part in the training for two days at Ramdia branch on cattle rearing, loss and profit calculation, disease management, vaccination, artificial breeding etc. After successful completion of the training, I took a loan of 10,000 taka from CSS and bought a cow. After a few months, the cow gave birth of a calf. Now, I get 2 liters of milk every day and selling that milk I add some extra financial support to the family. I am thankful to CSS for showing me an appropriate path for a housewife like me. With the help of training program, I am able to start my own enterprise with best effort for cattle rearing. I pray to God so that other village housewives can get this opportunity to develop their own entrepreneurship. 29

40 Strengthening Partners Network CSS has started "Strengthening Partners Network (SPN)" program in 2012 with the objective to carry out development activities in the organization level for institutional development with a focus on strengthening elements which are connected to the intervention strategies "Civil Society Strengthening" and "Policy Influencing". For the first year, the theme is to develop the organizational capacity on Advocacy and Fund Raising. Under this project, two new teams are formed namely Advocacy Unit and Fund Raising Unit. This year a series of workshops are conducted on CSS advocacy policy review, Need Assessment and Issue Identification, Capacity assessment on advocacy/policy influencing. A new Fund Raising manual has been developed. Besides these two types of activities, other capacity buildings of the staffs are carried out under this project. 30
