EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 2 Executive Summary Gross domestic product (GDP), one of the primary indicators of the U.S. economy s health, was up 3.5 percent in the third quarter of 2014 according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Not surprisingly, jobs within the healthcare industry, which has accounted for around 18 percent of GDP in recent years, increased from July through September as well. Data on the national employment situation from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) revealed that U.S. employers added 7,000 new positions in July, 34,000 in August, and 23,000 in September. Physician offices, clinics, hospitals and other health systems that recruited on HEALTHeCAREERS Network certainly picked up the pace of their efforts. More than 3,000 employers posted 74,859 positions on the online job board in Q This was a 60 percent increase over Q2 healthcare employment opportunities and a 65 percent increase over Q HEALTHeCAREERS Network s recent merger with Health Callings was partially responsible for the expansion seen in nursing and allied health jobs. Growth in these areas, in addition to continued leadership in the physician recruitment space, allowed HEALTHeCAREERS Network to provide employers with better support across all disciplines. The recruitment of nurses overtook that of physicians/surgeons in Q3, though both disciplines continued as the most in-demand among HEALTHeCAREERS Network employers. Further analysis revealed several additional notable trends including dramatic increases in the number of jobs posted in therapy, radiologic technology/ medical imaging, and allied health.

KEY FINDINGS 4 Physicians/Surgeons Physicians/Surgeons Q3 Job Postings Q2 22,389 postings 30% of the total number of all postings on HEALTHeCAREERS Network. Most In-Demand 2014 Q3 General Family Medicine Emergency Medicine Internal Medicine Q3 Most Growth 25% 19% 18% Cardiology Women s Health/ OBGYN Pediatrics In Q3 2014, 35 percent of the physician/surgeon jobs on HEALTHeCAREERS Network were new postings, a 3 percent increase over Q The slight decrease in renewals may indicate that employers are finding it at least marginally easier to fill available physician/surgeon positions this year. Some future doctors are choosing joint MD/MBA degree programs to pursue healthcare management opportunities. According to a report by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, an education policy and research center, the number of joint MD/MBA programs in the U.S. has increased from six to 65 in 20 years. Between 2011 and 2012 alone, the total number of programs grew 25 percent. Medical students are taking advantage of these opportunities. In fact, at UC Irvine in California, 20 percent are completing a joint MD/MBA degree. The reason for their interest may be financial. The New York Times reported earlier this year that medicine s biggest earners are not doctors. Insurance chief executive officers earn average salaries of $584,000. Hospital CEOs make an average of $386,000 a year and hospital administrators average $237,000. This is in comparison to $306,000 for a surgeon and $185,000 for a general medicine physician. $ Insurance CEO $584,000 Hospital CEO $386,000 Surgeon $306,000 Hospital Administrator $237,000 General Medicine Physician $185,000 Family-physician groups (including the American Academy of Family Physicians) have formed Family Medicine for America s Health to promote the importance of family medicine and support primary care doctors. They recently launched a five-year, $20 million campaign and plan to focus on communicating the benefits to patients of using family medicine doctors for primary care, as well as fair pay for the time these physicians spend making referrals, checking in with patients and being available 24/7. They also want to encourage additional incentives for medical students to choose primary care and make electronic health records less burdensome. [ continued on next page ]
KEY FINDINGS 5 [ Physicians/Surgeons continued ] Physician morale has improved at least slightly. Fifty-six percent of the 20,000 physicians who responded to a recent survey described their morale as negative. However, those who felt optimistic increased to 44 percent this year from 32 percent in In general, the data collected by The Physicians Foundation revealed that younger doctors were significantly more optimistic than seasoned million hours $102 billion 8.7 hours per week professionals were. Additionally, female physicians were more optimistic than male physicians were, and the optimism of employed doctors was greater than that of those in private practice. The size of each of these more optimistic demographics has been on the rise and may account for the improvement. U.S. doctors spend nearly 17 percent of their working hours on paperwork and it s detrimental to morale. A review of confidential data from the 2008 Health Tracking Physician Survey, recently published in the International Journal of Health Services by two lecturers from Harvard Medical School, found that the average doctor spent 8.7 hours per week, or 16.6 percent of his or her working time, on administration. This excludes tasks such as chart notes and ordering tests but includes billing, dealing with insurance, personnel management and contract negotiation. In general, the study found that patient-care physicians spent million hours on these administrative tasks in This year, they expect physician time spent on administration nationwide to equate to $102 billion. Unfortunately, they also noticed that career satisfaction fell as physicians spent more time on administration. While very satisfied doctors averaged 16.1 percent of their time on these tasks, very dissatisfied doctors averaged 20.6 percent.
KEY FINDINGS 6 Nurses, Nurse Practitioners & Physician Assistants Nursing, NP & PA Q3 Job Postings 24,060 postings 32% of the total number of all postings on HEALTHeCAREERS Network. Top 10 In-Demand Nursing Positions 2014 Q3 1. Operating room RN 2. Nursing assistant/ certified nursing assistant 3. Emergency medicine RN 4. ICU RN 5. Labor and delivery RN 6. General medical/surgical RN 7. Cardiology/telemetry RN 8. Post-anesthesia care unit RN 9. Cardiac catheterization lab RN 10. Progress care/step down RN In Q3 2014, 56 percent of the nurse practitioner jobs on HEALTHeCAREERS Network were new postings. This indicates a slight 2 percent decrease in renewals from Q2 2014, which may indicate employers are finding it slightly less challenging to fill nurse practitioner positions. A similar trend was seen for physician assistants (3 percent decrease in renewals). Nursing in general saw a 4 percent increase in renewals over the same period. The demand for nurse practitioners increased 16 percent from Q2 to Q3 2014, while the demand for physician assistants increased 13 percent as indicated by employer postings to HEALTHeCAREERS Network. One in five new nurses leave their first nursing job within one year. When registered nurses quit their jobs, it costs hospitals, health systems and other healthcare providers money and affects the quality of care patients receive. Unfortunately, a new study conducted by the RN Work Project and published in Policy, Politics and Nursing Practice recently revealed that an estimated 17.5 percent of newly licensed RNs leave their first nursing job within a year. Nearly 34 percent leave within two years, though hospitals have lower turnover for this group than other healthcare organizations. Q2 Q3 Several Positions with Significant Growth General medical/ surgical RN 42% Emergency medicine RN 54% ICU RN 87% Operating room RN 96% Labor and delivery RN 150% Nurses are dissatisfied with electronic health records (EHRs). A recent poll conducted by Black Book Market Research, a healthcare market research company, revealed that 92 percent of nurses are dissatisfied with inpatient electronic health record systems. Eighty-five percent said that flawed EHRs cause continual struggle, and 88 percent said their employers financial administrators had selected low-performance EHRs. Additionally, 79 percent of job-seeking RNs reported that they consider the reputation of a hospital s EHR system when considering where they want to work. Recent data revealed more patients are open to primary care provided by physician assistants (PAs). The study, conducted by Harris Poll on behalf of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA), found that an estimated 45 percent of U.S. adults interacted with a PA within the last year. More than 90 percent of these patients felt that having a PA available at a practice made it easier for them to get an appointment. They also believed that the use of PAs improves the quality of the healthcare they receive and the outcome of their treatment. Healthcare IT Q3 Job Postings 592 postings 1% of the total number of all postings on HEALTHeCAREERS Network. This is a 4% decrease from Q2, but still a 5% increase over Q Healthcare IT Tech startup interest in predictive analytics is surging. Rock Health, a company that funds and supports startups building the next generation of healthcare technologies, recently reported that $1.9 billion in venture capital investment is surging into predictive analytic projects. They state that the need for predictive analytics, which basically involves using historic data to predict future developments and influence patient care, will increase as data multiples. According to Rock Health, the healthcare Q2 Q3 Most Growth 54% Database Management 42% Quality Assurance 24% Health Information Administrator industry stored roughly 500 petabytes of patient data in By 2020, they expect 50 times as much data will have been stored 25,000 petabytes in all. Technology to make sense of this massive quantity of information will be essential.
OTHER NOTABLE GROWTH SPOTS 8 Q3 Most Growth Therapy 601% Q Q % Q Q Physical therapist 79% Speech-language pathologist 85% Other Notable Growth Spots The BLS expects physical therapist jobs to increase 36 percent between 2012 and U.S. healthcare organizations employed 204,200 of these professionals in 2012, a number that is projected to increase by 73,500 by Aging Baby Boomers will drive much of this demand. Not only do they want to remain active later in life, they are also more likely to require rehabilitative physical therapy to recover from heart attacks, strokes and mobility-related injuries. Radiologic technology/ medical imaging 346% Q Q % Q Q Sonography 81% Opportunities for speech-language pathologists will increase 19 percent between 2012 and 2022 according to the BLS. Total jobs for these professionals will grow by 26,000 during that period, with most speech-language pathologists working in elementary and secondary schools (41 percent), offices of physical, occupational and speech therapists (17 percent), and state, local and private hospitals (13 percent). Several factors will drive demand including an increased awareness of speech and language disorders in younger children, and an increase in speech and language disorders in the aging population. Diagnostic medical sonographer jobs will increase 46 percent during the same period. According to the BLS, diagnostic medical sonographers held 58,800 jobs at U.S. healthcare organizations in 2012, most in hospitals, though some worked in physician offices, medical and diagnostic laboratories and other healthcare settings. They expect the number employed in non-hospital settings will increase the most over the next several years due to the recent shift toward providing outpatient care.
KEY TAKEAWAYS 9 Key Takeaways Healthcare recruiting, as indicated by HEALTHeCAREERS Network job openings, increased 60 percent quarter-over-quarter and 65 percent year-over-year. Physicians/surgeons and nursing jobs continued to account for the largest percentages of opportunities advertised by employers. Nurses claimed the top spot for the first time this quarter, in part due to the merger with Health Callings. General medicine physicians specifically family medicine, emergency medicine, and internal medicine were once again in demand by HEALTHeCAREERS Network employers. Specialties showing significant growth quarter-over-quarter were cardiology, women s health/obgyn, and pediatrics. Nursing positions continued to dominate the list of top 10 most in-demand non-physician positions as identified by HEALTHeCAREERS Network employers, with eight of the 10 roles ranging from nursing assistant to nurse practitioner. Additionally, the demand for nurse practitioners and physician assistants both increased quarter-over-quarter.
