EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 2 Executive Summary From online insurance marketplace stumbles to the nation s Ebola scare, 2014 was a big year for healthcare news. That s a trend that s likely to continue in As of January, federal officials reported almost 10 million people had signed up for insurance or re-enrolled in their plans through state and federal marketplaces. This puts the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on track to meet the current administration s goal of 9.1 to 9.9 million covered Americans by the end of million people had signed up or re-enrolled in their plans million As expected, the decrease in uninsured citizens has increased the demand for healthcare services. To compensate, employers ranging from small practices and clinics to large healthcare systems added jobs last year. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the healthcare industry grew by 25,000 jobs in October, 29,000 in November, and 34,000 in December. Hospitals, which had a net job gain of zero in 2013, added 47,000 jobs over the last year. The growing demand for qualified healthcare professionals was apparent on Health ecareers as well. A total of 5,423 employers posted 252,054 jobs in This was a 47 percent increase over recruiting on the site in 2013, which was partly attributable to the network s mid-year merger with Health Callings. Physicians/surgeons and nurses remained the top areas of recruitment, though therapy, counseling, and social services positions saw significant year-over-year increases.

KEY FINDINGS 4 Physicians/Surgeons: 2014 Job Postings 87,585 postings 33% of total annual job postings on Health ecareers Physicians/Surgeons: 2014 Most Growth Physicians/Surgeons New job activations for physician/surgeon roles increased 4 percent over This decrease in renewed postings may indicate that Health ecareers employers found physician/surgeon recruiting slightly less difficult in 2014 than it was the previous year. A new survey found physician burnout has increased 6 percent since Feelings of burnout including a loss of enthusiasm, increase in cynicism and a low sense of personal accomplishment were reported by 46 percent of the physicians Medscape surveyed for their 2015 Physician Lifestyle Report. This was an increase from 39.8 percent in 2013, with the highest burnout rates amongst critical care (53 percent) and emergency medicine (52 percent). Half of all family physicians, internists, and general surgeons also reported burnout symptoms. General Family Medicine 2. Emergency Medicine 3. Internal Medicine 2% 4. Psychiatry The expansion of preventative care benefits under the ACA has resulted in more patients using preventative services. According to a study conducted by the Palo Alto Medical Foundation Research Institute and funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the use of both Welcome to Medicare exams and annual wellness visits increased substantially among Medicare fee-for-service patients after the implementation of the ACA. In fact, Medicare-covered preventive visits grew from 1.4 percent before ACA implementation to 27.5 percent after. When researchers combined the data for covered and non-covered preventive services, they found preventive visits between 2011 and 2013 nearly doubled, from 17.3 percent to 32.8 percent. 5 KEY FINDINGS 5 [ Physicians/Surgeons continued ] The Physicians Foundation has released its 2015 Physician Watch List. It identified five issues the foundation, a not-for-profit organization that advances the work of physicians in practice, believes will be top of mind for physicians in the coming year. Based on data from the foundation s 2014 biennial survey report, it includes thoughts on increased consolidation, face time with patients, ICD-10, cost of care transparency, and patient access to physician care. It also revealed that the administrative side of medicine continues to affect physician attitudes towards practice ownership. According to the survey findings, 7 percent of independent physicians plan to seek hospital employment while 6 percent plan to switch to concierge medicine. Another 10 percent plan to seek a non-clinical healthcare job in the future. Nurses, Nurse Practitioners & Physician Assistants Nurses, NPs & PAs: 2014 Job Postings The demand for nurse practitioners increased 34 percent from 2013 to 2014, while the demand for physician assistants increased 10 percent as indicated by employer postings to Health ecareers. (with only dentist above it). The publication s reasons for the ranking are not surprising. NPs earned a median salary of $92,670 in 2013, with the highestpaid earning $126,250 or more. Job opportunities 102,235 postings 39% of total annual job postings on Health ecareers New job activations for nurse practitioners increased 22 percent in This decrease in renewed postings may indicate Health ecareers employers found it less challenging to recruit nurse practitioners last year than the year before. New job activations for physician assistant roles increased 3 percent. Overall, nursing saw a 141 percent increase in new job activations, though it is safe to assume the mid-2014 merger with Health Callings contributed to this dramatic change. U.S. News and World Report ranked physician assistant and nurse practitioner within the top ten best jobs for NP scored the second place spot 10 Top 10 Most In-Demand Non-Physician Positions in Physical Therapist 2. 6 KEY FINDINGS [ Nurses, NPs & PAs continued ] 6 for NPs are also growing. While Health ecareers employers posted 15,347 jobs for NPs in 2014, the BLS predicts their employment will increase 34 percent between 2012 and PA was tenth on the U.S. News and World Report list of best jobs. PAs earned a median salary of $92,970 in 76% 12 % 10% 2% Breakdown of Nursing Opportunities Registered Nurse Nursing Support Nurse Management Advanced Practice Nurse 2013, with the highest-paid raking in $130,620 or more. Health ecareers employers posted 10,706 PA jobs in 2014, and the BLS predicts the employment of these professionals will increase 38 percent between 2012 and ICUs between July 2013 and April Their research revealed that the survival rate among intensive care patients who were cared for by a PA and acute care NP was 92.2 percent. This was a significant increase over the survival rate among A recent study showed patients treated by intensive patients cared for by a team of residents alone. care teams that include nurse practitioners and The overall survival rates to hospital discharge physician assistants are more likely to survive. were 85.6 percent and 80.8 percent, respectively. Nurses, NPs & PAs: 2014 Significant Growth At Society of Critical Care Medicine Meeting, professionals at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio presented the findings of a study they conducted analyzing data on 1,054 patients admitted to the organization s The American Nurses Association has urged a reduction in the average number of hours RNs work. The ANA, which represents the 3.1 million nurses in the U.S., recently released a policy statement that advised employers to limit the time that nurses 574% Labor and Delivery RN 462% ICU RN work to just 12 hours in a 24-hour period. They also recommend keeping nurses to a 40-hour workweek and providing them with more flexibility if they need 388% Operating Room RN 281% Nursing Assistant/ Certified Nursing Assistant 268% Emergency Medicine RN to pick up extra shifts. Registered nurses should be discouraged from working extra shifts or working overtime that may contribute to fatigue, the statement explained. Every registered nurse, if asked, should be able to decline working extra shifts or overtime without being penalized.
KEY FINDINGS 7 Healthcare IT Healthcare IT: 2014 Job Postings 2,375 postings 1% of total annual job postings on Health ecareers. This is an 11% increase over The U.S. Department of Agriculture doled out more than $20 million in grants for telehealth projects. They issued the grants in November, and they are designed to support healthcare projects across the country. One such project was the University of Iowa s ehealth Extension Network. The Network received a grant for almost $500,000 that will provide more than 70 rural healthcare facilities in 46 Iowa counties with telehealth carts. The carts will be equipped with highquality cameras, video conferencing capabilities, and cloud-based image-sharing software. Healthcare IT: 2014 Most Growth Several healthcare IT bills have been working their way through Congress. These bipartisan efforts include the SOFTWARE Act (introduced by Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn) and the MEDTECH Act (backed by Sens. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah and Michael Bennett, D-Colo). Both of these acts aim to control the way the FDA oversees health IT. The Telehealth Enhancement Act, written to waive Medicare restrictions on home health services, and the Medicare Telehealth Parity Act, designed to expand telehealth coverage, are also under consideration. 152% Software Development 126% Systems Security 113% Process Improvement 55% Database Management 43% HIT Analyst 42% Web Developer 37% HIT Executive 30% Health Information Administrator 29% HIT Quality Assurance 14% Project Management 7% Health Information Technician
OTHER NOTABLE GROWTH SPOTS 8 Other Notable Growth Spots The BLS expects physical therapist jobs to increase 36 percent between 2012 and U.S. healthcare organizations employed 204,200 of these professionals in 2012, a number that is projected to increase by 73,500 by Aging Baby Boomers will drive 2014 Other Notable Growth 533% Therapy Physical Therapist 4% of total job postings Occupational Therapist 2% of total job postings 60% Counseling and Social Services Psychiatry increased 17% much of this demand. Not only do they want to remain active later in life, they are also more likely to require rehabilitative physical therapy to recover from heart attacks, strokes and mobilityrelated injuries. The BLS also expects occupational therapist employment to grow. Healthcare organizations in the U.S. employed 113,200 occupational therapists in That number is projected to increase 29 percent by 2022, as occupational therapy continues to be an important tool in the treatment of patients with illnesses and disabilities such as Alzheimer s, cerebral palsy, autism and limb loss. The ACA continues to contribute to the increased demand for counseling and social service-related healthcare professionals. Mental health and substance abuse services are designated as essential health insurance benefits under the ACA. These services include behavioral health treatment such as psychotherapy and counseling as well as mental and behavioral health inpatient services and treatment for substance use disorder. As more Americans obtain ACA-compliant insurance in 2015, it s likely the need for counseling and social service-related healthcare professionals will continue to grow.
KEY TAKEAWAYS 9 Key Takeaways Healthcare recruiting, as indicated by Health ecareers job openings, increased 47 percent year-over-year. Physicians/surgeons and nursing jobs continued to account for the largest percentages of opportunities advertised by employers. General medicine physicians specifically family medicine, emergency medicine, and internal medicine continued to be in demand on Health ecareers. Specialties showing significant growth year-over-year included obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, and gastroenterology. Nursing positions continued to dominate the top ten most in-demand nonphysician positions as identified by Health ecareers employers, with seven of the 10 roles ranging from nursing assistant and general medical RN to emergency medicine RN and operating room RN. Additionally, the demand for nurse practitioners and physician assistants both increased year-over-year. The demand for therapy, counseling and social security professionals by Health ecareers employers increased substantially in From physical and occupational therapist to psychiatrist, the demand for these workers is likely to continue to increase in the coming year as more Americans obtain ACA-compliant insurance coverage.
