Testimonials Aber Ahmed Hi there! My name is Aber Ahmed, and I m a 3rd year student from Bangladesh at The University of Hong Kong where I am majoring in Accounting & Finance. It is my wish to work in an accounting firm, preferably one of the Big Four firms, and Hong Kong is a really good platform to build a career in the business and finance world. The seniors are the best mentors you could ask for. When I first got to HKU, there was just so much to do that it was overwhelming. But I was mentored by the seniors, and had help from others who had started off with me. The seniors were kind enough to guide me, and so I help the freshman however I can every year since. It s not all about work with me though. I like to enjoy my life along with all the work there is. The University of Hong Kong itself has a lot of things that students can try out. One of the first clubs I joined was the Archery club. I ve dreamt about archery for as long as I can remember! I could always imagine myself, pulling the string on the bow, aiming the arrow, staring down on the target. That finally came true at HKU! Other than archery, I was able to continue old sports and start new ones. I play football, cricket, basketball and tennis on a regular basis with my friends and also perform Bollywood dance with HKU s Bollywood Dance Group. Of course I need not mention there s the whole of Hong Kong to visit! Sights to see, things to do, traditions and skills that you can learn, and so much more! Julian Gaertner Hi! I m Julian and I come from Germany. I graduated with a degree in Social Sciences from HKU in My first intention of coming to Hong Kong was to study the Chinese language and culture. The greatest thing that I gained from studying at HKU was the ability to reinvent myself. I challenged myself, dove into different cultures and socialized with people from various academic and social backgrounds. I learnt to have the courage to trust my gut. I took the opportunity to learn Mandarin and Cantonese. At HKU, I met with a diverse range of people and used the opportunity to establish great connections that have helped me establish my own company. I am now the CEO of a company, can you believe it! We have a team of 6 people, which is a big responsibility. At present I am in charge of marketing and product development. My company, Live it China Limited runs LiveItChina.com, a social network for language learners. My friends and I founded it while still in university and after graduation we saw the opportunity to take our passion further. Hong Kong is very supportive of start-ups and there is an entrepreneurial spirit here. It is very simple to set up a company in Hong Kong. It is possible to apply for different types of funding from the government, and with luck and ambition get angel investors and venture capital. My company is fortunate to be a part of one of Hong Kong s largest incubation programmes as a part of the Cyberport Incubation Scheme. It has given me experience on what it means to be a professional, set certain standards and meet goals.

Testimonials Lan Hoang Hello there! My name is Lan and I am from Vietnam. I m currently doing my bachelor degree in Social Sciences at HKU, majoring in Political Science and Sociology. I enjoy working with people of different cultural backgrounds and learning from their diverse perspectives. I am interested in social entrepreneurship, and with the experience acquired during my studies in HKU as well as at the British Council s Global Changemakers in Hong Kong - a global youth network of social entrepreneurs, community activists and advocates between the ages of 16 and 25 aiming to catalyse positive social change, I hope to start up my own social enterprise in developing countries to assist girls education. Seeing the world as a beautiful place as it is, I m also an aspiring adventurer and globetrotter. Only halfway through my undergraduate studies in HKU, the university s diverse opportunities of knowledge and cultural exchange have made me able to acquire international exposure through cultural trips and internships. Most notable were my two spectacular months of summer internship in Ghana, West Africa where I understood the much misjudged continent first-hand. It was not all about hunger and poverty as depicted on mass media, I could really see development going on, though further hard work and effort is needed. Two months was not too short to get to know the places, the faces and the culture in Ghana. It was also not too long to make me want to go back home. But it was enough to change my perspectives of the world somehow, to enrich my experience and broaden my horizons. Thanks to HKU s strong relationship with the NGO partner in Ghana, I had the company of fellow local interns who were enthusiastic enough to show me around and tell me all about the social issues and current affairs of the country and continent! To me, anything can happen at HKU, as long as you take the initiative and make efforts to go for the endless opportunities and possibilities here.

Testimonials Ishitaa Gidwani Hi there, I m Ishitaa. I am an Indian born in Hong Kong. I am now in my second year studying Bachelor of Science in Exercise and Health at HKU. I love sports of any kind and have been actively playing cricket in Hong Kong ever since I was 3 years old. I was the captain of the Hong Kong Cricket Club team previously and now I am the Captain of the Hong Kong National Women s Cricket Team. I love being at HKU. The amount of support I have gotten for my sport at HKU has been amazing. I have been able to be an active sportsman and juggle my time with my academics. There are others in my degree who are also national team representatives in rugby and softball. I get to study what I love and I am so sure I want to end up as an athlete and teach sports to other young kids. I have been able to take my skill at cricket and secure a summer internship at a top school in Hong Kong as a Physical Education teacher. Getting hands-on practice in the field affirms that pursuing my passion in cricket and teaching it to students is what I want to do in my life. My degree in sports science is quite broad and it really opens your horizons into the field. It s great if you know you have an interest in sport, exercise or health but not sure what you want to specialize in. You can choose to go on to be a teacher, a sports journalist, sports management, nutritionist, sports psychologist, physiotherapist, and more. With the value of a degree from a university as well known as HKU, I hope to go abroad to pursue higher studies in teaching sports to children.

Testimonials Mohammad Junaid Arshad Hi there! I m Junaid and I m from Pakistan. I chose to study in The University of Hong Kong because it stood out above the rest in Asia. The quality of education it provides relative to the world s top-class universities keeping in mind the cost of tuition is incomparable. I like the hands-on approach of the courses at HKU because it has taken my learning beyond theory. I have learnt to apply my knowledge through experiences like giving presentations, performing lab experiments, working in teams, and active involvement in our tutorials. I feel better prepared to get into the workforce because of it. The diversity in HKU is above the mark. At any given time you can meet people from Canada to Japan; from Russia to Australia. This is not just because of the lots of international students like me, but also because of the good relations of HKU with other universities across the world that brings in hundreds of exchange students onto campus each semester. This also gives me an opportunity to go on an exchange to literally any country of my choice. I have been quite active in extra-curricular activities and I was able to get an internship in Australia for the summer. I worked there for 2 months as a marketing intern even though I was studying Engineering. This was because I wanted to experience something different outside my degree and HKU gave me the flexibility, tools and guidelines. Australia was different. While Hong Kong is famous for its skyscrapers, Australia is famous for its beautiful beaches. During my internship I participated in meetings of relevance at other organizations premises and at the head office itself, reported thereon and completed research projects for the company. The variety of the meetings topics, the opportunity of being directly involved in a project, working in such an international environment and sharing experiences, are some things I particularly enjoyed. My advice to prospective students is that, when you come to The University of Hong Kong, don t be afraid to venture out and join clubs and societies. You will experience living amongst people from many nationalities and make lifelong friends. For example, one of the most enjoyable experiences I ve had at HKU was the Orientation Day, which helped me get to know the locals here. Orientation Day has many amusing and entertaining activities conducted by different societies, and there are always events going on like this, so take advantage of them. Coming here was the best decision I ve made so far.

Testimonials Yeung Ching Mingme I think the reason why I chose to come to HKU has a lot to do with my personality. I am a rather outgoing person, who accepts challenges and loves exploring new things. To me, HKU is a dynamic place with students from all over the world and this is ideal for me. As an HKU student, I have had access to a range of different extra-curricular activities, internships and exchange opportunities that can help broaden my horizon. In June, I joined Legal Interflow 2013 organized by the Law Association of HKU s Student Union. I think it is by far the most interesting and inspiring learning experience I ve had at HKU. It is a study trip which enables law students like me to travel and explore the legal system of other countries. This year s destination was Korea. I had the chance to visit Korea s courts, law schools and major law firms. I loved that I was able to learn concrete knowledge while having fun at the same time. As a BBA (Law) student, there are many career opportunities available to me. I am thankful to the Business Association, which hosted a very rewarding Career Exposure Programme for us. I was lucky to be chosen as one of the student interns who visited a major international law firm for a day. It was a very valuable experience for me as I had never even stepped into a law firm before I entered HKU! I think knowing how the real industry functions can give me motivation and first-hand insights into my future line of work. Of course spending one day at a law firm is not enough, and that s why over my summer break, I also worked at a local law firm to learn even more about the industry. I am glad that the lawyers gave me real tasks to perform where I could actually get my hands dirty. I drafted letters, handled legal paperwork, and participated in important client meetings. I also assisted a lawyer in a few divorce cases. I was so surprised to find that being a lawyer is not only about handling paperwork and formulating arguments, but also giving clients psychological comfort. This was an important learning experience one that I perhaps, wouldn t have learnt without being given this opportunity to venture outside of the boundaries of the classroom. Apart from academic study, I also had many chances to help out different events at HKU. I applied to be a student moderator of HKU s General Education (GE) unit and was given the chance to co-host a talk alongside GE s director with the famous singer, Karen Mok. This was a really unforgettable experience. As it was the first time I acted as a moderator, I was very nervous. However, I was very lucky to have guidance from GE s director and got to learn how to deal with such events and situations.

Testimonials Mark Czypionka Hi I m Mark. I m German and grew up in Poland. I m studying Economics and Finance with a minor in Politics at HKU. In high school in Germany, I was fascinated by the strong growth of Asian countries, especially China and Japan, and was very keen to get more exposure in these countries. I decided to apply to HKU because it teaches in English, is the best university in Asia and one of the best in the world. I was really lucky to be accepted! My university life has been challenging and I feel that I have grown a lot. I have immersed myself in a new cultural environment, which is a unique mix of East and West, with people from all over the world, and worked hard in the academic rigour that comes with studying at a prestigious university like HKU. As I am nearing my graduation, I am in the process of applying for jobs. I have found that while academic skills are important, opportunities outside the classroom prepared me well for the job world. I used my time in university to get some work experience and pick up language skills. I spent one summer learning Mandarin Chinese at Fudan University in Shanghai which was a great experience! I also interned at a real estate investment trust in Poland doing financial marketing which was really interesting. My advice to students beginning to shape their careers is that aside from grabbing the right opportunities, understanding the job application process is very important. This is where HKU s Centre of Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS) comes in. They have inside knowledge on the industry and provide you with really good practice, feedback and resources. CEDARS also organises job fairs, recruitment talks by all the top companies on campus, where you can meet top professionals, establish connections, apply for jobs and get hands-on information on the industry you want to be in.

Learning outside the Classroom Experiential Learning (EL) is a very powerful form of learning and is one of the fundamental elements of HKU s new undergraduate curriculum. It takes learning outside the traditional boundary of the classroom where you can come face-to-face with the very things you are studying. You can gain from the university s partnerships with companies, social enterprises and universities around the world and work on real-life projects. Through experiential learning, you can act as a business consultant, researcher, professional engineer, or community volunteer under the guidance of teachers and mentors. An example of EL projects carried out in previous years is one done by a group of Architecture students who undertook a project in Luk Zuk Village, China. These students travelled to China to work on surveying, drawing, interviewing, researching, and developing proposals that address the problems in the village area to eventually become real life building projects. and job opportunities at top companies like JP Morgan, Merrill Lynch, HSBC, Ernst&Young, Ogilvy&Mather, CNN, Barclays Capital, John Swire and Sons, Linklaters, Credit Suisse, and Goldman Sachs. Through our large alumni network, many of whom hold prestigious positions in these top companies; you can take up hundreds of opportunities in places like Shanghai, Beijing, Singapore, Japan, London, New York, Vancouver, San Francisco, and a host of cities worldwide. With these opportunities and training, it is perhaps not surprising that for seven consecutive years, virtually 100% of our graduates have achieved employment (99.7% Graduate Employment Rate, HKU, ). Numerous graduates have many more than one job offers from which to choose, several of which come before even taking the final examination! Being an established financial hub in Asia, Hong Kong is where you can get valuable experience working at renowned multinational companies and firms across different fields. Through HKU s extensive network of employers and organisations, you can take up internships

Community Involvement To pursue an all-round education, you can engage in one of our hundreds of community service projects in Hong Kong and worldwide. If you are passionate about a cause, you will be able to take up opportunities to apply for and receive generous grants and other forms of support from the university to formulate, develop and execute your own projects anywhere in the world. For example, the Better Health, Better Lives, Better Future Project (BBB) was launched in January this year. Project BBB aims to improve water quality and hygiene awareness in the orphanages of Siem Reap, Cambodia. The team of HKU students in this project visited different orphanages in Cambodia, set up programmes with various local companies to improve supplies of sanitation products, built a sustainable water purification system and conducted educational workshops for children. Every summer HKU students go to Africa to work with an NGO founded by HKU Alumnus, Sebastian Lindstrom, called Light for Children, in Ghana to conduct HIV/AIDS and sexual health programmes in the region.
