3 What Is Interior Design? The environment is the place where we live, work, learn and play. Interior ers conceive and create imaginative and innovative solutions that transform environments into functional, beautiful and inspiring spaces. This pursuit for the effective development of space, user safety, beauty, and function has contributed to the maturity of the present-day profession. Contemporary ers solve spatial problems through a strategic process that involves interviewing the client and defining their specific needs; researching and analyzing the spaces and sites; conceptualizing the space through 2D and D drawings, diagrams and renderings; and selecting materials, finishes, furniture, and equipment. Interior ers communicate the final construction of ed spaces to clients, architects, and contractors through documents that include floor plans and elevations. Interior ers must develop excellent communication and organizational skills because much of their time is spent working with clients, architects, and builders and managing the construction of the ed space. At VCUarts Department of Interior Design, students are prepared to become professional ers. They gain a strong art and foundation combined with advanced courses that focus on the professional study and examination of. They also complete professional internships and have many opportunities to study abroad. Diana Chang, 2011 We like to say that we make sculpture you can walk through. Our students learn to discover those possibilities conceptually and then convert those concepts to practical solutions and applications for our environments. A second portfolio review of studio work takes place at the end of the sophomore year. The faculty uses the portfolio as an advising tool to determine student placement in the program. The student s GPA also is evaluated to determine if the student may continue in the program. The following courses must be completed at the end of the sophomore year to be eligible for continuation in the program: IDES 201, 202, 211, 212, 21, 251, 252 and Students are required to have a laptop computer and appropriate software upon entry into the program. The department recommends a specific computer package that is used throughout the academic year. The package is updated each year because of changes in computer technology. The total cost is approximately $,800 and financial aid is available to those who qualify. An student materials and supplies kit also is required upon initial entry into the program; it contains a variety of drawing supplies for graphics and studios. Students will receive the computer requirements and student materials requirements upon acceptance into the program. 6.
