Qualichem, spol. s r.o. Sokolská 1041, Mlník Application Guide For Set of Preparations Designed for Protection of Construction Materials Against GRAFFITI INTRODUCTION Company Qualichem, s.r.o., Mlník developed preparations designed for : and introduced to the market a set of Preventive protection and against permanent staining by graffiti under names Barbakan and Barbakan ; Removing of existing graffiti and for easy removing of graffiti from surfaces and objects preventively protected, under name Graffitistop. Preparations Barbakan and Barbakan will protect all kinds of plasters* (limecement, acrylate, silicate, silicon) of newly finished or older buildings, insulation facade systems, ceramic tiles, natural and artificial stones, concrete surfaces, surfaces of splitted concrete. They serve as preventive protection against permanent staining of industrial constructions, e.g. pillars, bridges, highway concrete constructions, underground station, etc., by graffiti. From objects and surfaces preventively protected, graffiti can be easily removed without damaging the surface. *) with exception of purely lime plasters Preparations Graffitistop 0-8 remove existing graffiti from municipal objects and installations, underground or railway vagons, or traffic signs, and remove graffiti from surfaces and objects protected by prevention, without damaging the surface. Their properties meet all the requirements, and efficiency of preparations Graffitistop 1, 4, 5 for removing graffiti from railway vagons are stated in certificate of Zkušebny D pro povrchové úpravy. 1. PREVENTION AGAINST GRAFFITI For protection of new, existing, and historical objects against permanent staining by graffiti, preparation Barbakan and its modification Barbakan were developed. After their application on surfaces of construction materials, it is possible by a very simple and nondemanding procedure to remove possible marking, signs and sprayers stains without damaging the surface. After cleaning, there are no remaining bleached traces on the surface, and the object retains the original appearance. After application of both preparations, surface of the protected material remains matt, not glossy, and the colour shade does not change. Modification Barbakan Liquid is designed primarily for protection of indoor surfaces (non-porous, glossy surfaces). When Barbakan is applied on polished materials (e.g. marble), the matty shade formed after application disappears after repolishing. Application of preparations Barbakan does not deteriorate conditions of vapour permeability (see measurements by VŠCHT Praha in Attachment). Protection is guaranteed for five years. Barbakan Designed for preventive protection of medium porous materials, and also for highly porous materials after preceding penetration treatment. After application and drying, the - 1 -
preparation forms a protective layer against various kinds of colour sprays (e.g. acrylate, epoxy, nitrocellulose, polyurethane, alkyd, etc.). It decreases soaking properties of the surface against water, enhances resistance of the facade towards dirt, limits growth of algae, moss, and lichen, but retains high permeability for water vapour (enables breathing of the plaster). It also prolongs lifetime of the plaster! Barbakan Designed for surface protection of smooth, little porous construction materials, e.g. smooth concrete, non-glazed tiles, some asbestos-cement materials, some natural or artificial stones, vinyltherm mosaics, etc. APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS (see Table 1, 2) Depending on type of the protected material, the preparation is used either on its own or in combination with primer penetration treatment GROUP 1 little porous surfaces GROUP 2 porous surfaces GROUP 1 : Application of prevention Barbakan - on porous little soaking material acrylate, silicone, and silicate plasters, insulation (polystyrene foam) facade systéme, smooth facing bricks - on concrete, splitted concrete, - limestone - on granite - on surfaces (walls) already treated and washed by preparation Graffitistop (after removing of graffiti) Before applying the preventive preparation Barbakan, the surface should be cleaned from dirt and dust. On the perfectly dry surface, preparation Barbakan is applied by brush, roller, or by spraying (possible to dilute by water in ratio max. 1 : 1 ), in two to three layers, allowing to dry between the individual layers for 4 to 8 hours, depending on temperature and humidity of the environment. GROUP 2 : Application of prevention Barbakan - on porous and soaking materials, firebricks with primer penetration treatment - on lime-cement plasters -on natural and artificial stones (sandstone, -arenaceous marl, travertine) Before applying the preventive preparation Barbakan, the surface should be cleaned from dirt and dust. On the perfectly dry surface, the penetration primer (e.g. Sokrat 4210) diluted with water in ratio 1:4, or a silicate primer, is first applied in two layers. After allowing to dry (4-8 hours), preparation Barbakan is applied by brush, roller, or by spraying (diluted by water in ratio max. 1 : 1 ), in two layers, allowing to dry between the individual layers for 4 to 8 hours, depending on temperature and humidity of the environment
Application of prevention Barbakan - on smooth, little porous, and non-soaking surfaces - on compact non-glazed ceramic tiles - on marble Before applying the preventive preparation Barbakan, the surface should be cleaned from dirt and dust. Preparation Barbakan is applied by brush, roller, or by spraying, in two layers, allowing to dry between the individual layers for 3-4 hours. When Barbakan is applied on polished materials (e.g. marble), the matty shade formed after application disappears after repolishing. Cleaning graffiti from surfaces preventively treated by preparations Barbakan and Barbakan is performed by preparations of the series Graffitistop, and it is achieved much easier and faster. After cleaning, it is necessary to renew the preventive treatment by Barbakan!!! To keep the esthetic appearance of the treated surface, it is recommended to test the application of the preparation on a small hidden part of the object. 2. REMOVING OF GRAFFITI - 4 -
Undesired spray paintings are seen on walls, transport vehicles, eye-catchers, everywhere around us. They can hardly be considered as art objects. Most of us will agree that especially in case of new facades, historically preserved objects, etc., they are sheer vandalism. As any prevention of those is possible only after removal of exisitng stainings, it is necesssary first to remove the old graffiti. For this purpose, company Qualichem s.r.o. developed a group of preparations under trade name Graffitistop. Preparations Graffitistop 0, Graffitistop 1, Graffitistop 2, Graffitistop 3, Graffitistop 4, Graffitistop 5, Graffitistop 6, Graffitistop 7, and Graffitistop 8 are designed for removal of graffiti, signs, and stains made by various types of colours and markers, predominantly from smooth surfaces, and from porous surfaces including plasters treated by the preventive preparations Barbakan or Barbakan Liquid. Insulation facade systems can be cleaned without damaging the polystyrene material by preparations Graffitistop 6 and Graffitistop 7, which were specifically developed for this purpose. For removal of stains from markers, or their discoloration, Graffitistop 8 was designed. Graffitistop 0, 3, 5, and 7 are manufactured in the form of gel. Types of surfaces, on which we can find graffiti, are listed in Table 1. Preparations of the group Graffitistop are designed for removal of graffiti, signs, and stains made by various types of sprayed colours (acrylate, epoxy, nitrocellulose, polyurethane, alkyd, etc.) on smooth surfaces, and for removing graffiti from surfaces treated by preventive protection preparations Barbakan or Barbakan. From plasters (their porous surface enables a deeper penetration of sprayed colours), graffiti can be removed depending on type of the plaster (mineral plasters are more difficult to clean than the higher-grade Munich-type ones), on the type of the used colour, and application technique with more or less success. It is always necessary to test individual types of cleaning agents on a hidden part of the object, and to select suitable combinations of chemical and mechanical cleansing. At removing of graffiti, many factors need to be considered that influence the results of cleaning. These are e.g. porosity of the surface, type of the colour and its quantity, age of the stains, temperature of the environment, etc. After cleaning has been finished, it is usually necessary to match up the appearance of the plaster with the facade colour, and after drying, to apply at least two layers the preventive preparation Barbakan or Barbakan. APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS : Removal of graffiti-stains is achieved by application of a suitable cleaning agent from the group GRAFFITISTOP (see Table 4). The active effect of the GRAFFITISTOP preparation and disruption of the sprayed layer is then followed by intense washing by a heavy duty brush and water with surfactant (saponate). The surface is then washed by sufficient amount of water from the mains, or by the high pressure water of the system WAP. Preparations GRAFFITISTOP 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8 are applied by spraying, brush, or roller. Gel preparations Graffitistop 0, 3, 5, and 7, are applied by brush or roller. Graffitistop 0 (gel) and Graffitistop 1 (lioquid) Graffitistop 2 () and Graffitistop 3 (gel) Graffitistop 4 () and Graffitistop 5 (gel) Graffitistop 6 () and Graffitistop 7 (gel) Graffitistop 8 is available only in a form. The listed couples are mutually fully compatible
The stained spot is first spray-treated by the selected Graffitistop, while the neighbouring plaster or surface is protected from the dissolved graffiti colours e.g. by a sponge, by a special filtration (soaking) paper, etc. The cleaned surface should not be left to get fully dry (continuously adding the Graffitistop). The treatment time should be 5-10 minutes, depending on age and strength of staining. We recommend the same area to also treat by the gel form of Graffitistop by brush, and to leave it act for some 5 minutes. This allows for a deeper final cleaning of the surface. ATTENTION! If complete removal of graffiti is not achieved by the first cleaning attempt, the surface should not be washed by water, but the cleaning procedure should be repeated. Finally, when the surface has been cleaned, the swollen and destructed remains of colours are washed away by cold water and brush, or by high-pressure water system WAP when needed. During cleaning treatment, till the colours and stains are fully destructed, water should never be applied. Water stops the cleaning process. During treatment by Graffitistop, we help the process by use of a brush, a wire brush, or other mechanical aids, depending on the cleaned surface. Removing old or aged stains may require that the cleaning procedure is repeated several times. The cleaning procedure should be performed at temperatures between +10 C to +30 C. At low temperatures, the cleaning is rather more difficult. High temperatures increase consumption of preparations Graffitistop by their faster evaporation, and prevent longer time effect of the preparation. Preparations Graffitistop 6 and 7 are designed for cleaning of insulating facade systems without damaging the polystyrene which is a part of these systems. ATTENTION! The other Graffitistop preparations damage polystyrene! Preparation Graffitistop 8 is designed specifically for removing of marker colours, and for removing of shades after cleaning of spray colours. These are discoloured during the application. Other conditions and rules for removing of graffiti apply similarly as with the other Graffitistop preparations (see above and below). Preparations of the Graffitistop series can also be used for cleaning of non-porous surfaces from remains of various dirts and stains, e.g. old paints, glues, waxes, greasy stains, etc. ATTENTION! The effect of the preparation must always be tested on a hidden part of the object! It is recommended to apply the prevention against graffiti Barbakan on surfaces cleaned by this procedure, in a continuous layer up to the height of ca 2.50 metres (see the Application instruction, page 2 and 3).
