ASCP vs. ASCP i Exams As of January 1, 2015 ASCP i applicants will be taking the same examination as their U.S. counterparts. International certification exams were originally developed by redacting the U.S. regulatory questions while maintaining the scientific content of the exams. This transition to utilize the same test database will further demonstrate the essential equivalence of the ASCP and ASCP i credentials.
ASCP vs. ASCP i Exams ASCP i applicants will be responsible for U.S. regulatory information. There are study references available on the reading lists of the respective examinations. The number of questions related to the regulatory component is a relatively small part of the laboratory operations area and does not comprise a significant percentage of the exam.
MT(ASCP i ) to MLS(ASCP i ) Effective January 1, 2015 the International Medical Technologist, MT(ASCP i ) will transition into the International Medical Laboratory Scientist, MLS(ASCP i ) to more closely align with its U.S. counterpart.
ASCP i Eligibility Routes Eligibility routes have been established for each of the international examinations offered. Eligibility is based upon completion of academic prerequisites and clinical laboratory education or experience. Diploma/degree educational programs must be accredited/approved by a governing regulatory association or Ministry
ASCP i Eligibility Routes: Education
ASCP i Eligibility Routes: Laboratory Experience Eligibility Requirements for Laboratory Experience Both U.S. ASCP and ASCP i eligibility requirements for laboratory experience include the following: CAP accreditation Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation Accreditation under ISO 15189
ASCP i Eligibility Routes: Laboratory Experience What does this mean to this mean to the International Applicant? It is possible for international applicants to qualify for U.S. national examinations through U.S. ASCP eligibility routes provided all other requirements are met. The acceptability of experience from labs accredited by CAP, JCI or under ISO will make the ASCP examinations more accessible to the international market.

About the ASCP i Exam Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) With CAT, when a person answers a question correctly, the next test question has a slightly higher level of difficulty. The difficulty level of the questions presented to the examinee continues to increase until a question is answered incorrectly. Then, a slightly easier question is presented. With CAT, the test is tailored to the individual s ability level. Each question in the exam pool is calibrated for difficulty and categorized by content area.
Example of CAT Testing 1. A reliable test for distinguishing Staph. aureus from the other staphylococci is: coagulase. (Correct) *After a correct answer, questions of slightly higher difficulty are given. 2. Which of the following casts is most likely to be found in healthy people? Hyaline casts (Correct) 3. The characteristic erythrocyte found in pernicious anemia is: microcytic (Incorrect)* *After an incorrect answer the test will revert back to a slightly easier question. 4. All donor blood testing must include: serological test for syphilis. (Correct)
