1 Finance management Managing finance and funding Objectives To provide participants with the critical skills required to raise funds for humanitarian programmes and to manage financial resources accountably: funding sources, funding cycle, funding ng strategy, mainstream donors, proposal writing, grant management, monitoring and reporting, fundraising essentials, build activity-based programmes budgets, field accounts and financial reports, budget monitoring reports, analyse financial statements, internal controls, manage incidences of fraud. 2 Training sessions in this catalogue focus on the key competencies of international aid work: knowledge of the international aid sector and pre-departure preparation, human resources, training of trainers, finance and donors, project management, safety and security, technical logistics and supply chain. This new system is added to help you choose the most appropriate session according to your objective. Participants may also choose several specific modules among the Management programmes trainings. Please take a look at our Management programmes pages on our websites to see our packages You wish to strengthen, adapt or update a specific area of a key competency. Training objectives To provide participants with the critical skills required to raise funds for humanitarian programmes and to manage financial resources accountably: Review of various types of funding sources. Identify the steps of the funding cycle. Establish a funding strategy at country and programme levels. Distinguish the different types of donors, their functioning, rules and conditions in the grant application process. Identify constraints faced by international aid organizations. Review the components of a funding proposal. Know how to prepare and conduct negotiations with the donor. Know how to write a concept note. Identify the key points of a grant contract. Identify the keys points of grant monitoring and reporting. Identify the various sources of private funding and the fundraising basics. Apply theoretical knowledge when seeking funding and monitoring funds. Appreciate the importance of good financial management systems in achieving NGO objectives and that financial management is for everyone. Describe the seven principles and the four building blocks of financial management as frameworks for promoting robust financial systems. Use Mango s financial health check to identify strengths and weaknesses in financial systems. Describe the important role of coding structures in budgeting and financial accounting and reporting. Describe how financial planning fits into operational and strategic planning. Build activity-based project budgets, phased budgets and cash flow forecasts for effective programme planning and implementation. Prepare field accounts and simple financial reports. Describe the difference between cash and accruals accounting. Use budget monitoring reports to inform and support programme management decisions. Analyse financial statements using ratio analysis techniques. Read an auditor's report to assess the status of audited financial statements. Assess internal control strengths and weaknesses and apply internal control procedures to minimise risk. Describe how to identify and manage incidences of fraud. Describe practical ways to avoid paying bribes. Elaborate a budget, a funding plan. Enter a single entry bookkeeping, produce and analyze a budget follow up. Elaborate a donor budget amendment and prepare a financial report to a donor. Use specific functions in EXCEL (Pivot table / VlookUp). Page2
3 Training methodologies Experience sharing and peer-learning. Learning by doing with exercises and case studies related to NGO management practices. Concepts and behavioural understanding by situation modelling. Introduction of analysis grids and tools that can be adjusted to each context. Number of participants Groups may vary according to the type of session and training (case studies, group work, etc.). Maximum number of participants for this training session is 20. If there is an insufficient number of a registration, Bioforce Institut reserves the right to cancel the training session (in which case, the persons registered will be fully reimbursed). Evaluation process Monitoring session A learning review is planned every day with the facilitator. The general aim of this activity is to assess trainee achievement of learning outcomes and to adapt content to trainees expectations and learning objectives. Evaluation & lessons learned of the training: two monitoring sessions are organized during the training to give the opportunity to the trainees to share their opinion on the courses and to assess the quality of the module. The richness of exchanges among the trainees strengthens learning and the quality of the programmes throughout the training period. Knowledge assessment An individual written exam for the training module is organised. This exam may consist of theoretical questions, exercises or case study linked with the module s learning outcomes. The student has to obtain a minimum of 10 out of 20 to successfully complete the module. During the training For our trainings organized in Vénissieux, France The training will take place in a high environmental quality building (2,700m²) dedicatedto the training activities and directly accessible via public transport. During the training you can have access to specific resources: A resource center with more than 3,000 documents and recognized information on international relief, geopolitics and development together with technical documentation on humanitarian programme. 2 technical training facilities fully equipped with materials used in humanitarian field. 2 computer rooms 1 conference room where conferences on humanitarian and development sector are regularly organised For each training, the following training materials will be used: A Videoprojector Page3
4 A white board One or several flipcharts After the training You will receive a Flash drive including the training contents used during the session and the contacts of participants and trainers as well as a Certificate of Attendance (issued on the condition of being present throughout the training). No level of national certification. A recognized grade certificate will be delivered to participants who pass the final exam assessing trainee achievement of learning outcomes. This module is one of the components of the Management Programmes (Certificate in Humanitarian Programme Management is a private certificate recognized by the Grenoble Business School & the Bioforce Institute, and the Master of Sciences in Humanitarian Programme Management). Certificate in Humanitarian Logistics Management is a private certificate recognized by the Bioforce Institute & the NGO MSF Belgium and Switzerland, and the Master of Sciences in Humanitarian Programme Management).
