2 Abstract Today s fast-paced business environment makes it easy to overlook how much time is being spent on non-critical items and how many IT resources are being underutilized. When IT staff and budget are limited, optimizing your administrator s time is of utmost importance. Asset management and automated processes are key requirements in freeing up IT staff and resources. Would it be helpful to be alerted when a server has less than 20% disk space left? Or when CPU utilization is under 25% and over 80%? What about running reports based on software license utilization or any inventory item across your entire network? These are the types of things that usually take more time and infrastructure to implement than is cost-effective for an organization that does not have thousands of assets. However, because of the advancement of lower-cost and simpler solutions that provide much of the required functionality, it is now possible for an organization of any size to ensure that it has a comprehensive IT asset strategy in place. Organizations are increasingly looking for ways to optimize resources while keeping costs low using affordable technology. With a quick technology focus we will view some of the available solutions for organizations that are looking to implement some sort of software Desktop Management suite, and review some of the core components of such a solution. Technology Focus Desktop Management Software has been a longstanding core component of all organizations with an IT infrastructure. When taking new hardware costs, server software licensing, and total labor costs the initial setup cost of both Tivoli and SMS is more than double their single client per seat cost and consistently more than double the price of CrossTec EMS.
