Large detection/analysis systems providers such as InVision Technologies, L3, and PerkinElmer are scrambling to add nuclear suitcase bombs to the list of grim scenarios they screen for, which include explosives, guns, anthrax, and other weapons of mass destruction. BNC leads the field in nuclear material detection, a not-new but scary necessity that has taken on much greater significance since September 11. Copyright Sloan Publications 5464 Skylane Blvd. Suite B Santa Rosa, CA Phone: news@busjrnl.com The possibility of radiation dispersal instruments (also called 'dirty bombs') has been around for awhile, says BNC director of exports Julius Mills. But now it's being talked of openly. By detonating a suitcase full of radioactive material and TNT or another explosive, a terrorist could make an area uninhabitable for thousands of years. An indispensable tool BNC's portable surveillance and measurement (SAM) system wasn't developed with the idea of stopping terrorists. One of four product families developed by the privately held, 40-year-old company, it's used to measure radiation levels at nuclear power plants, waste dumps, manufacturing plants, and hospitals and clinics. What makes it indispensable as a security tool is its ability to detect quite low levels of more than 90 different isotopes, distinguishing a weapons-grade isotope from one that's not threatening. And all this from a moving target. SAM is the only device that can scan an object on a conveyer belt or in a slow-moving vehicle in real time, says Mr. Mills. And because it detects neutrons, it can detect radioactive material concealed within a lead shield. The National Transportation Safety Act mandates that U.S. roads, ports, and airports be made safe for travelers. According to BNC general manager David Brown, The Transportation Security Agency will target domestic ports and airports as well as about 200 ports and airports around the world that funnel travelers and goods into the U.S. We estimate the world market for our device is 2,000-3,000 units, says Mr. Brown. That market could grow much larger if the U.S./Canadian and U.S./Mexican borders come under surveillance as well. BNC, with an annual growth rate of about 10%, has revenues of under $10 million, according to Mr. Brown. The agreement with MAXxess, a subsidiary of Anaheim-based Odetics Inc., and other agreements will initially double the sales of the SAM devices, which sell for about $10,000 apiece.

Page 6 of 6 inks deals The heightened awareness of radiation danger, largely ignored before the 9-11 terrorists' attacks, has prompted the 20-employee company to look at widening its security applications. These could range from monitoring all packages coming into a pharmacy to performing multiple - entrance pedestrian monitoring with reports sent to a central control room.
