2 WHAT WE RE READING HEALTHCARE & LIFE SCIENCES The Huffington post published an article that highlights the nine most significant healthcare-related stories from Among the stories discussed in the piece are the Ebola outbreak, the emergence of personal health data analytics, and the rapid decline of smoking rates in Americans. The article also contains links to additional information on each topic should readers want to dig deeper. The piece can be found here. According to an article published in The Wall Street Journal, UnitedHealthCare has launched a pilot program with MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston to reimburse for the care of certain cancer patients through bundled capitated payments. The payments are designed to cover all treatment for a year and are estimated to be in the six figures (specific financial terms were not disclosed). Notably, because the payments are capped, additional treatment costs incurred by MD Anderson due to complications do not trigger additional payments. As many readers may be aware, the shift to bundled payments where providers are at risk is a key development in the current healthcare reform environment. A link to the article can be found here. (a subscription to The Wall Street Journal Online may be required) The Atlantic posted an article discussing the impact of race on the quality of healthcare received by patients. The article primarily relies on two publications in The New England Journal of Medicine: one focused on the quality of acute care received by patients of various races while the other focused on the quality of preventative care. According to the studies, the quality of acute care received by patients of different ethnicities has generally converged while a significant quality gap persists between white and black patients when it comes to preventative care.
