2 WHAT WE RE READING LOGISTICS SUPPLYING THE BOOMING HEALTHCARE INDUSTRY Household names of UPS, FedEx, and DHL are investing to support their booming healthcare logistics businesses. While these brands are often associated with the delivery of ecommerce packages, healthcare companies across the country are utilizing logistics businesses to reduce supply-chain costs. For example, kits for highend medical devices can be replenished at UPS logistics hubs for speedier returns back to hospitals. These services are performed at specialty distribution sites equipped with high-security, specialty refrigeration systems, and other characteristics one would expect in the healthcare industry. Products range from specialty drugs, surgical devices, and even human material. While significant investment is required to participate in the healthcare logistics market, a 4% annual growth rate in a $70 billion global market justifies the significant investments made by the likes of UPS, FedEx, and DHL. The deal would have creased the largest physician ambulatory service in the country. In their rejection of the offer, TeamHealth cited both value and execution risk as core reasons why they are not interested in pursuing the transaction. This unsolicited offer follows on the heels of the Surgery Partners IPO which priced at the end of September. Surgery Partner s $915 million market value at IPO creates the third largest publicly traded surgery center platform behind AmSurg and Surgical Care Affiliates.
