1 PROJECT PROFILE ON CENTRE FOR ADVANCED SPORT SCIENCE 2012
2 Centre for Advanced Sport Science Preamble Sport Science is a discipline that studies the application of scientific principles and techniques with the aim of improving sporting performance. Human movement is a related scientific discipline that studies human movement in all contexts including that of sport. The study of Sport Science traditionally incorporates areas of physiology, psychology, motor control and biomechanics but also includes other topics such as nutrition and diet, sports technology, anthropometry, kinanthropometry, and performance analysis. Sport scientists and performance consultants are growing in demand and employment numbers, with the ever-increasing focus within the sporting world on achieving the best results possible. Through the study of science and sport, researchers have developed a greater understanding on how the human body reacts to exercise, training, different environments and many other stimuli. Sport is all forms of competitive physical activity which, through casual or organised participation, aim to use, maintain or improve physical fitness and provide entertainment to participants. Hundreds of sports exist, from those requiring only two participants, through to those with hundreds of simultaneous participants, either in teams or competing as individuals. Sports are usually governed by a set of rules or customs. Physical events such as scoring goals or crossing a line first often define the result of a sport. However, the degree of skill and performance in some sports such as diving, dressage and figure skating is judged according to objective or subjective criteria. This is in contrast with other judged activities such as beauty pageants and body building, where skill does not have to be shown and the criteria are not as well defined. State of Art Higher-education degrees in sports science or human physiology are also becoming increasingly popular with many universities now offering both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the discipline. Opportunities for graduates in these fields
3 employment as a physical education teacher, dietician or nutritionist, performance analyst, sports coach, sports therapist, fitness center manager, sports administrator, strength and conditioning specialist or retail manager of a sports store. Graduates may also be well positioned to undertake further training to become an accredited physiotherapist, exercise physiologist or clinical exercise consultant. But in India the field of Sports Science is in the infant stage. Majority of the athletes and players are lacking the knowledge of sports science and they are simply wondering and finding a solution to bridge gap between the training and the influence of sports science. Sports Biomechanics, Sports Physiology and Sports Psychology are the integral part of peak performance in sports. But we the Indians have everything, including the ability to defeat everyone but lack sports technology to analyze their own performance. The biomechanics even act as a trouble shooter in the performance but to analyze these we lack sophisticated equipments such as motion analyzer, highly sophisticated video cameras with 1000 frames per second, time gun e.t.c. Even the colleges offering the sports courses are also not competent to impart such type of advanced technological feedback in performance. Hence it is essential to give emphasis on sports science programmers in India so that the achievements of sports performance will be further enhanced with the same physiological parameters. Objective To draw upon a range of sciences to inform and advance the fields of sport, exercise, education, health and well-being through fundamental and applied research. To pursue research of international standing both within subject disciplines and collaboration across disciplines. To have a lifespan approach, recognising the importance and implications of our research from birth to old age. Activities of the Centre MSc Sports Biomechanics : This programme will provide students the opportunity to gain an indepth understanding of Sports Biomechanics. All aspects of Sports Biomechanics will
4 be covered, ranging from experimental equipment requirements and utilisation through to the latest theoretical considerations and research problems. MSc Exercise Physiology: The programme will provide the students the opportunity to gain understanding in depth of the physiological, nutritional and metabolic demands of exercise and training, and their implications for participation in sport and for the maintenance of good health. It is designed for graduates possessing a good degree in sports science or other relevant biological science. There are many noted institutions in the United Kingdom which run courses in sport and exercise sciences. Some of the more well known are Durham, Leeds, Loughborough, Exeter, Bath, Bangor, Birmingham, Edinburgh. Within the United States, The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi offers degrees in Sports and High Performance Materials. Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi offers a Master of Science degree in "Sport Science" with two concentrations in either Sport Management or Strength and Conditioning. In 2010, East Tennessee State University became the first university in the US to offer a PhD in Sport Physiology. This highlights how much the developed countries gave importance to sports science. It is a negative part of us to start a sports science course in any one of the Universities which can contribute better performance in sports. Expected Expenditure: Rs 10 Crore
