5 Paragraph Form For Literary Analysis TS: Your topic sentence; may also be your thesis statement. Formula: MAIN IDEA + YOUR CONCLUSIONS= THESIS (i.e. In the Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck uses the metaphor of a bitter harvest to explore the consequences society faces for ignoring the needs of its poorest members.) CD: Concrete Detail- a quote from the novel that proves your topic/thesis. It is also known as EVIDENCE. You must use citations with these, since they are the words of your author or source. Citations format: We got a bad thing made by men, and by God, that s something we can change (Steinbeck 38). It s important to give your CD maximum impact. You can do this by setting it up with a transition (for example, furthermore, etc.) and a lead-in that tells where in the story your quote was taken. Here s an example: For example, (transition), when a tenant farmer s land is destroyed, he reveals what many are feeling (lead-in), We ve got a bad thing made by men, and by God, that s something we can change (Steinbeck 38). CM: Commentary These are your words that explain how your quote supports your thesis. You should have at least two for every quote. A commentary looks like this: This shows the growing anger in the tenant farmers, an anger that will eventually rise up and take over the nation. This one man represents the many, and his voice will be joined by other voices until their collective frustration explodes, having dire consequences for all those who ignored their plight. -1-
