2 Bullying & Harassment This course examines human rights harassment, personal harassment and bullying in the workplace. Course will review arbitrators views regarding discipline worthy interpersonal misconduct, as well as the rights and responsibilities of the alleged harasser, victim, and union. Participants will examine harassment within common law, the collective agreement, human rights legislation, and recent amendments to the Workers Compensation Act. There will also be discussion of strategies for eliminating workplace harassment as well as opportunities for group problem solving exercises. 5 Duty to Accommodate & Return to Work This workshop covers the Employer s duty to accommodate members in their position or duties because of disability or other grounds such as religion or family status protected by the Human Rights Code. Learn duty to accommodate basics: the legal test, obligations of the employer, union and members, and how to request a temporary or permanent accommodation. Course will also include duty to co-operate, requests for medical information, and the steps and obligations for a return to work after a health related absence. Date: Saturday, October 24 9:30 am to 4:00 pm Instructors Catherine Sullivan & Linsay Buss Catherine Sullivan is a lawyer with the BCGEU. advocacy issues. She specializes in human rights Linsay Buss is a staff representative and negotiator with the BCGEU where she specializes in worker benefits, rehabilitation, and return-to-work planning.
6 ī ĞĐƟǀ Ğ' ƌŝğǀ ĂŶĐĞƐ This is a course designed for new union activists and stewards, or as a refresher for those with more experience. Learn the difference between a complaint and a grievance, when to start a grievance, how to support and advocate for your members in the grievances and best practices. Participants will learn the fundamentals for successful grievance outcomes. Date: Saturday, December 5 9:30 am to 4:00 pm Instructors Megan Ashbury - BCGEU Megan Ashbury is a lawyer working with the BCGEU. She has over 15 years experience representing works in public service, health, and private sector in matters related to workplace injuries, disability, discipline, and termination.
7 Stress in the Workplace This course will explore the causes and consequences of stress in the workplace, the potential ways to reduce its occurrence, coping strategies, and legal options with respect to what types of grievances may be filed and what kind of remedies may be pursued. Date: Saturday, November 28 9:30 am to 4:00 pm Instructors Michael Prokosh - McGrady & Co Michael Prokosh is an associate lawyer with McGrady & Company, who practices in the areas of labour law, human rights, the Charter, and civil litigation. He has taught Stress in the Workplace in the Labour Studies Certificate program at McMaster University and for the VDLC.
8 WCB - Introductory This course provides a basic overview of the Workers Compensation system as it applies to workers who are injured or develop an occupational disease on the job. This is an introductory level course which will look at the law and policy, how decisions are made by the WCB, and how the appeal system works for those who have to argue an appeal. We will look at the practical realities faced by injured workers trying to navigate the minefield of workers compensation and its appellate systems. Rolf Harrison received his law degree from the University of British Columbia in As an articling student he represented clients at a variety of administrative boards and tribunals.
