Introducing Accenture Development Partnerships 3
About Accenture Development Partnerships Who are Accenture Development Partnerships? What s our goal? How do we work? Why are we different? A non-profit group within Accenture. We were started in 2003 as an employee-driven initiative. We aim to channel Accenture s business and technology skills to organizations in the international development sector. We staff small teams of Accenture employees on projects mostly in developing countries with non-profit clients. Our innovative business model enables us to make private sector experience and best practice available to the non-profit sector. 4
Speaking The Same Language 5
Cloud Computing allows companies to access ITbased services via the internet. A cloud-based model provides rapid acquisition, low to no capital investment, relatively low operating costs and variable pricing tied directly to use.. Navigating the Cloud with Accenture 6
Common Cloud Service and Deployment Models SaaS Public Cloud PaaS IaaS Computing technologies delivered to the organization as services by external providers. Private (Internal) Cloud Technologies function as a service to end users but managed and provisioned internally within an organization. Hybrid Cloud Computing activities and tasks are allocated to internal or external clouds as required. Software as a Service Applications owned, managed and delivered remotely by one or more providers. Usually delivered to users across multiple organisations via a web browser instead of deployed and maintained on local servers. Platform as a Service Application infrastructure services allowing an organisation to develop, deploy and run it s own applications on a Cloud providers infrastructure instead of building and configuring custom development and runtime environments. Infrastructure as a Service Virtualized storage, server and database options that can be accessed on demand, providing instant scaling capacity instead of forecasting demand and purchasing / provisioning hardware to meet it. Private Public Hybrid 7
Best Practices For Cloud Projects 8
The Cloud Project Lifecycle Assessment Assess your organizations applications, Infrastructure and operations to determine Cloud opportunities and define the Business Case. Strategy Develop a strategy and roadmap for integrating Cloud technologies into your IT and business environment, assessing both benefits, risks and organizational impacts. Development Design, plan and manage development of applications or infrastructure in the Cloud to reduce your total cost of ownership or provide additional services and extend the reach of existing apps. Delivery Plan, implement and support the integration of third-party SaaS, PaaS and IaaS Cloud solutions to maximize speed to value and business functionality. Support Establish the blueprint for how your Cloud enabled IT organisation operates and how IT services are provided; including processes, governance, roles and organizational models. 9
Best Practices For Cloud Assessment Activities Clearly communicate SaaS customization limits. Agree up front on the level of business need for future feature enhancement. Identify areas of offline capability. 10
Best Practices For Strategy Activities Understand which data types are candidates for Cloud migration. Complete data cleansing before project start. Understand implementation approaches and roadmaps of shortlisted vendors. 11
Best Practices For Development Activities Don t short change design activities. Plan time for iterative solution demo sessions with stakeholders. Establish business ownership in some areas of solution configuration. 12
Best Practices For Delivery Activities The importance of Business Readiness is multiplied. Start change initiatives early; ideally whilst defining project roadmap. Agree cross organisation requirement cost / benefit analysis model. 13
Best Practices For Support Activities Prepare for on-going solution changes and feature enhancements. Assess the skill set changes required by your internal support team. Plan for Cloud service outages. 14
Project Based Lessons Learned 15
Our Experience Completed more than 500 non profit sector projects in 70+ developing countries. Supported Cloud projects in the past two years. Delivered Cloud projects across HQ and Field Office locations in multiple geographies. Projects include Cloud Strategy, SaaS, PaaS and IaaS delivery. 16
Understanding Cost Models and Storage Options (Large Global Sponsorship / Community Non Profit Organisation) SaaS applications often charge separately for File and Data storage. Vendors often assume minimum record sizes going over quota can be expensive. A wide range of system activities count towards data storage quotas. Archiving approaches agreed early with Business. Agreement that it wasn t necessary to store all data in the Cloud. Third party storage service options were varied (Cloud and non Cloud). Some services offer good functional integration with SaaS products. Data Cleansing planned and executed prior to start of the project; could have further reduced data storage need. 17
Managing Business Stakeholders in Cloud Data Migration for (Large National Sponsorship Non Profit Organisation) Migration of existing system data is one of the most challenging Cloud adoption activities. Data owners need to be engaged and supported early in the process. Business engagement on the project Data Dictionary is vital but often problematic. Migration and Data Validation activities are dependent on this deliverable. Bridging the knowledge gap between business data use and the database schema was a major project challenge. Linking Data Dictionary to Business Scenarios is a challenging, but worthwhile exercise. 18
Preparing and Planning For Infrastructure and Service Outages. (Single Issue Organization) Cloud service outages and data loss does occasionally occur. Minimise impact by forward planning and taking advantage of distributed architectures. Cloud outages do happen. Business critical services still need a Failover plan. Plan for resilience! By taking advantage of Cloud load balancing services, applications can be distributed across data centers and geographies. For SaaS office suites ( , calendaring) enable offline options and mobile solutions to ensure service access. 19
To Summarise 1. The Cloud is a new technology but a lot of the old rules still apply. 2. Expect greater business ownership than ever before. 3. Data! Data! Data! 20
