2 Introduction Purpose of this document This information outlines current and future etp systems, and provides readers with an understanding of how they might consider, install and configure systems in their pharmacy should they wish to engage them. Please note that this document is not intended to advise pharmacies if one etp system is better than the other. This is dependent on a range of factors, including, but not limited to: the prescribing and/or dispensing system used the version of the system used other software installed at the pharmacy other pharmacy IT parameters (e.g. internet connection) ongoing changes to vendor systems. As a result, it is not possible to provide detailed information regarding performance or compatibility. Page 2 of 6

4 General information Getting ready to install Considerations for implementation are reduced, largely because the two etp products work behind-thescenes, and the installation is mainly handled by the vendors. However, a couple of requirements should be borne in mind. 1. Up-to-date software Both general practices and pharmacies will need to ensure they have the latest version of their software (respectively, their clinical and dispensing systems). 2. PKI 1 (general practices only) Both etp products use PKI certificates to ensure that the prescriptions are secure, and both prefer use of the Medicare PKI. Most practices have PKI, but if they are not using systems that rely on PKI (e.g. Medicare s HPOS service, or etp), then they may have trouble locating their PKI certificate. Therefore, we advise practices to check before installation whether they have a certificate and if so, that they know where it is stored. Note that while erx requires the Medicare PKI certificate, MediSecure is able to supply an alternative PKI certificate if the practice cannot locate, or does not have, a Medicare one. System installation Installing MediSecure in pharmacy 1. Check system compatibility You can opt to use MediSecure if your pharmacy uses a compatible system. See page 3 for the list of compatible dispensing systems. To find out up to date information for compatible systems contact MediSecure. 2. Register You will need to register the pharmacy: Review the terms and conditions. Complete a registration page, which includes: o the name of the pharmacy group (e.g. My Chemist) o which dispensing system the pharmacy uses (e.g. LOTS) 3. Install Once registration is complete. The team at MediSecure will call you to discuss your requirements and to set up a time to install MediSecure. This is done remotely (i.e. they do not need to come to the pharmacy). The minimum system requirements for pharmacies are: Windows XP or above, or Macintosh OSX v10.4 or above continuous broadband internet connection the latest version of the dispensing system. 1 Public Key Infrastructure: a method for encrypting and authenticating electronic messages. 5 Installing erx in pharmacy 1. Check system compatibility You can opt to use erx if your pharmacy uses a compatible system. See page 3 for the list of compatible dispensing systems. To find out up to date information for compatible systems contact erx on Register You will need to register the practice. You need to: Review the terms and conditions. Complete a registration page for the pharmacy, which includes confirming the pharmacy: has previously registered for erx is using PBS Online has a main communications computer running Windows XP or above has broadband internet always connected has scanners on dispensing computers uses a compatible dispensing system (e.g. LOTS) is a Pharmacy Guild of Australia member. 3. Install Once registration is complete. The team at erx will send through your registration information and put you in touch with your clinical software vendor. With erx, all support is directed through your normal software vendor (e.g. LOTS). Your software vendor will assist with installation (if required) and configuration information. Page 5 of 6

6 etp assessment and installation checklist The checklist below provides a quick overview of some of the issues and tasks that a pharmacy might wish to consider prior to installing a new software system. Note that the checklist is not exhaustive and is intended as a guide only. Depending on the IT structure of your pharmacy and/or the system you are installing, the pharmacy may have fewer or additional issues to consider. Note that some sections of this checklist will not be necessary or appropriate for all pharmacies. The introduction of etp to a practice is typically a fast and seamless process and will be assisted by the vendors. Stage Tasks Done () 1. Assessment Ascertain whether your system is compatible. Discuss software with IT support. Present information (e.g. technical, cost, resourcing, changes to workflow) to decision maker(s) and make decision to proceed. Conduct further research and/or gather response(s) to questions, as appropriate. 2. Planning Appoint a member of the practice to oversee the installation and configuration. Plan the installation and configuration (i.e. when will you do it, in what order will you configure computers, etc.). Discuss your plan with IT support. Communicate with the rest of the pharmacy; provide information and a contact point. Confirm the installation and configuration (if required) with the vendor. 3. Deployment Software vendor test. Install and configure (if required). Log feedback or issues and escalate to vendor for action, if necessary. (Discontinue use if issues persist) 4. Review After the agreed review point is reached (e.g. 1 month, 3 months), review issues log and provide feedback to decision maker(s), if appropriate. Decide to continue, modify or discontinue use.
