1 Are you a young person who cares for someone with an illness, disability, mental health, drug or alcohol problem? If so then you are a Young Carer. Young Carers Group Caring for Young Carers throughout East Ayrshire

2 What is a Young Carer? Young Carers undertake a number of tasks for the people they look after. Young Carers are often left alone to do things like, washing, cooking, shopping, paying bills, collecting medication or helping to look after younger brothers or sisters. Sometimes being a Young Carer means that you may not have as much time as your friends to do the things that you enjoy......we can help! How can East Ayrshire Carers centre help Young Carers? The service provides information, advice and support on all issues affecting Young Carers. We do this in a number of ways including weekly activity groups, annual residential breaks, one-to-one befriending and advocacy. Young Carers meet weekly in both Kilmarnock and Cumnock for fun and friendship. Activities the young carers enjoy include, ten-pin bowling, visits to the Cinema, theme parties, video nights, craft evenings, visits to local burger bars, karaoke and discos. Young Carers also have the opportunity to have a longer break away in places like Devon and Aviemore where they take part in outdoor activities such as abseiling, skiing, canoeing and team-building skills. All activities and services are totally free of charge.

3 How can the Family Support Worker help Young Carers? The Family Support Worker will: Talk to Young Carers parents to explain the service and how it can help. Make sure that the family are getting all the practical and financial support they are entitled to. Help with any problems they may have either at home or at school. Ensure the Young Carers are able to attend the weekly activity group and assist with transport if required. Provide dependant care, where appropriate, to ensure the Young Carers are able to attend both the weekly activity groups and the annual residential breaks. What to do now? 10 What is a Young Carer? A Young Carer is a child or young person who is carrying out caring tasks and assuming a level of responsibility for another person, which would usually be taken on by an adult. Tasks would include companionship, cooking, cleaning, administering medication, shopping, paying bills or looking after younger brothers or sisters. Young Carers are frequently isolated from their peers as they spend a lot of their spare time at home with the person they care for. They may get teased because of their home life and feel they are unable to take friends home because their parents exhibit unsociable behaviour due to a drug or alcohol problem. 11 How can the Family Support Worker help Young Carers? The Family Support Worker will: Liaise with a range of agencies to support their work with Young Carers e.g. Social Work, Education, Health. Support Young Carers and their families by ensuring they receive the financial and practical support they are entitled to. Deliver services to suit the particular need of the Young Carer e.g. befriending, advocacy, one-to-one support, group activities, respite breaks. Ensure Young Carers are able to access the service by providing respite, transport and group activities free of charge. What to do now?
